Cairns Libraries provides access to many authoritative, subscription-only databases via
the State Library of Queensland on any PC with internet access.
You can also access these resources for FREE from home with your Cairns library card
number! First time users need to follow the prompts to open a Queensland Public
Library account which will offer immediate access after email verification.
To find a selection of these databases, log on to the Cairns Libraries webpage at
www.cairnslibrary.com.au, click on Online (located in the top menu bar), and select
E-Resources. We have divided our recommendations up into categories to make
things easier for you.
To access the full selection go to the State Library of Queensland
database webpage by clicking on the orange icon.
Databases are categorised by Subject (Health & Medicine, Language & Literature,
Law, Music etc).
Click the
button beside the database to begin searching.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online is a reference site
for students, educators and parents. Includes Standard,
Library, Student and Junior editions of the Encyclopaedia
Britannica.
The Australia/NZ Reference Centre combines
magazines, newspapers, reference books, and company
information to create the largest collection of regional full
text content available.
ProQuest Science Journals provide full-text articles
from a collection of scientific journals. Covers a wide
range of topics from both the physical and life sciences.
Health & Wellness provides access to articles in over
200 leading medical journals of which some 150 are
available full text.
Literature Resource Centre provides up-to-date
information about authors and all forms of literature
including contemporary literary criticism. Great resource
for students.

Berg Fashion Library includes information on world
dress and fashion. It covers all regions of the world from
pre-history to the present. This database is suitable for
researchers in disciplines such as anthropology, art history,
history, sociology, geography, folklore, museum studies,
theatre, and cultural studies as well as fashion and textiles.
Gale Virtual Reference Library offers encyclopaedias and
reference sources for research on many topics. Such as
Ancient civilizations reference library, Novels for students
and Customs of Australia. Use them for quick look ups or
doing homework assignments.
AGIS Plus Text provides access to PDF images of journal
articles on all aspects of law, including administrative law,
banking, constitutional law, copyright law, criminal law,
environmental law, family law, and trade practices.
Oxford Language Dictionaries Online contains the online
equivalent of the top-range language dictionaries of Oxford
University Press for French, German, Italian, Russian and
Spanish, and Chinese. There is also a quick translation tool
for words in 13 languages
Library Press Display provides a full-colour, full-page
collection of today’s newspapers from around the world for
the last 60 days (and sometimes further back). Hundreds
of titles are available from 70 countries in 37 languages.
Newspapers can be located by country, title and language.
Who’s Who in Australia offers biographical information
about notable Australians from all walks of life, including
business, politics, sports, academia and the arts.
The Directory of Australian Organisations is the ultimate
guide to Australian associations. With more than 5,500
entries the directory covers national and state associations,
foundations, marketing bodies, institutes and committees.
Music Online offers hundreds of thousands of audio
recordings, 400,000 pages of scores, 100,000 pages of
music reference, and over 500 hours of video. Listen to an
audio track or watch a video on your mobile device!
Art Full Text features articles and abstracts from
periodicals published throughout the world. Subjects
include archaeology, architecture, history, contemporary
art, costume, graphic arts and design, motion pictures,
museology, photography and television.
Dance in Video offers more than 500 hours of streaming
video which covers ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary,
experimental, and improvisational dance. Included are
classic performances, and videos on dance training.
19th Century British Library Newspapers this database
provides full runs of 48 titles from the 19th-century. Look up
events like the hunt for Jack the Ripper!
