In achieving this milestone in the hospital’s fundraising history, we are particularly grateful to a member of Sibley Memorial Hospital’s Board of Trustees, whose generous gift made an invaluable measure of difference to Sibley and allowed us to achieve this success. In this Honor Roll of Donors, Sibley recognizes the gifts of individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations from January 1, 2007, through December 31, 2007, in various donor categories. Bloedorn Foundation has given quietly to support the mission of Sibley Memorial Hospital. Dr. Walter A. Bloedorn (1886-1978) graduated from medical school and then served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps for 18 years. Some of his assignments included China, the Philippines, and Japan. Upon retiring from the Navy, Dr. Bloedorn joined the faculty and served as the Dean of the Medical School, Director of the Hospital and as a member of the Board of Trustees for George Washington University. A 46-year resident of the District of Columbia, Dr. Bloedorn decided to use his wealth to establish the Walter A. Bloedorn Foundation in 1966. Today, this small foundation continues to reflect Dr. Bloedorn’s long-held concern for health care and the community. Dr. Bloedorn entrusted the leadership of his enterprise to his lifelong counsel, Mr. F. Elwood Davis, who currently serves as chairman of the foundation. To aid in the cause, two of his children also serve on the board of the foundation: Anne Spratt and Bob Davis, who serves as current president of the Foundation. Other board members include Jack Kleh, John Sargent and Gregg Platts. Over the past eight years, the Bloedorn Foundation has supported a number of Sibley’s programs and initiatives, extending Dr. Bloedorn’s legacy of caring and concern for the community. Zunzer I n early 2008, Sibley received a letter from Rick Jameson, brother of Paula Jameson, who had been treated at the Sibley Cancer Center. Mr. Jameson notified us that his sister, who had lost her battle to cancer in 2007, had made a provision for Sibley in her will. “My sister was a native of New Orleans who resided in Virginia,” noted Mr. Jameson. “She was an accomplished attorney who enjoyed a successful and rewarding career in private and public service. All who knew Paula became her friend,” said Mr. Jameson. “She was the hub of a large group of people.” Paula Jameson led an active and full life. She was an attorney who served in numerous capacities – Children’s Defense Fund, Dow Jones & Company, Arter & Hadden (a national law firm) and other organizations. She was a single mother who adopted two children, Paul Andrew and Peter Jameson. Even as her health declined, she found the energy to attend church on Sundays with her sons. “I admired her zest for life and the fact that she would not let cancer keep her from doing what she loved until the very end of her life,” wrote Mr. Jameson. Wertheimer The gratitude we receive from patients and Walter and Jean Somerville I n 2006, Walter and Jean Somerville contacted Sibley Memorial Hospital to seek information about making a gift to the hospital. “We were interested in Sibley because of what it means to the quality of life for people in this area,” said Mr. Somerville. “I have always applauded institutions that are community-oriented and that have a mission associated with helping people.” The Somervilles are long-time residents of the District of Columbia. Mrs. Somerville was formerly an assistant principal in the District of Columbia school system. Mr. Somerville retired from a distinguished 42-year career with the U.S. government, with his first executive-level job as chief of the civilian equal opportunity division of the U.S. Coast Guard. After assuming the responsibilities of assistant commandant for the Coast Guard’s Civil Rights program in 1983, he was responsible for developing programs that promoted a culture valuing diversity. In fact, much of Mr. Somerville’s civil rights doctrines subsequently became the model for other branches of the military as well as other federal agencies. When Mr. and Mrs. Somerville initially met with representatives from Sibley, they were interested in finding out about the nursing scholarship program. “I was pleased to learn about this program,” said Mr. Somerville. “With the shortage of nurses in this country, I think Sibley is making a commendable contribution to the community through the nursing scholarship program.” Mr. and Mrs. Somerville’s interest in scholarship is well known at the University of Maryland University College, where they have endowed the Walter R. Somerville Scholarship Fund. Among the financial contributions made by the Somervilles to Sibley is a contribution through a donation of stock. This form of giving is a way to accomplish philanthropic objectives while benefiting from tax savings. With every new perspective and every shared observation, I am given a clearer understanding of what Sibley means to the community. From department to department, I have seen the important work performed by Sibley’s staff—from the hospital’s highly regarded registered nurses to the skilled technicians whose job it is to understand and operate state-of-the-art technology. The successful treatment of just one patient, I have come to see, requires the combined dedication and skill of dozens of staff members working together. I have been privileged to meet with patients and family members, and to learn from them the profound impact Sibley has had on their lives. The hospital’s reputation for compassionate, individualized care is tangible. “Sibley’s success speaks for itself,” said one physician with whom I spent the better part of an afternoon. I understand what he meant. It is clear that Sibley is a healthy, vibrant hospital with strong financial management and an excellent reputation for patient care, and that it has benefited from the wisdom and guidance of the hospital’s committed Board of Trustees. Carter President, Sibley Memorial Hospital Foundation Sibley Medical Building Update Campaign PReview Sibley Memorial Hospital did receive a map amendment from the District of Columbia Zoning Commission which permits the construction of a 130,000 square-foot Medical Building. The six level, class A building will have five floors above ground and one below. To provide ample parking, a garage also will be constructed that will have three levels above grade and two below, accommodating about 700 cars. The facility will provide space for medical retail space, including a pharmacy and a medical equipment provider; an Ambulatory Surgery/Imaging Center; offices for approximately 62 physicians; a café; and an auditorium with approximately 270 seats. Our attention is currently focused on determining the goal, scope and timeline for Sibley’s first campaign in 50 years. Construction of the medical building has been approved and will begin before year’s end. We know that we will need to raise funds to expand the existing emergency department and to build new labor rooms and new postpartum facilities. Most importantly we will also be working to support the building of a new patient pavilion consisting entirely of large private rooms designed to be family-centered. Sibley expects to begin construction in the fall of 2008 with completion anticipated by the summer of 2010. When construction is completed, Sibley will operate a free shuttle bus from Friendship Heights to the campus 10 hours a day, Monday through Friday. Additionally, as part of its commitment to the community, Sibley has agreed to cover the costs of the redesign and construction of a new intersection at Dalecarlia Parkway and Loughboro Road. These ambitions are all within the framework of Sibley continuing at its current capacity of 328 beds. We are not expanding but rather seeking to ensure that we can continue to provide the best care possible for our community.
