A Message
from the
President
Dear Alumni and Friends of Central Catholic,
What constitutes a ‘Field of Dreams’?
When the campaign to build the new synthetic turf athletic field began in October 2013, I focused my attention on the
architect's design and getting contractors in place. The goal was to have the field ready for the start of 2014 Fall sports.
I’m proud to say that the goal has been achieved! While meetings and emails on the project became a regular part of my
routine, the conversations remained focused on the dreams held by generations of the Central family. It was not just a field
being built, but a new place for the spirit of the School to come alive.
Besides being an aesthetically beautiful addition, the athletic field has brought new life to a part of the campus which went
largely unnoticed. With practices and games keeping it in constant use, the noise level after school has risen significantly
and we are enjoying every minute of it!
In many ways, I look at the School itself as a ‘field of dreams’. The value of family spirit is an important one in the Marist
world as faculty and staff together work hard to make the students feel at home. We strive daily to create an environment
which nurtures their hopes, challenges them to be unafraid to take risks and celebrates their God-given uniqueness.
The legacy of Central has been built by our alumni who have shared their diverse gifts and taken the opportunity to
make their dreams a reality.
The Annual Report of Philanthropy enclosed in this issue recognizes the faithful support of our alumni and benefactors,
who partner with us in the dream of Central’s founder, Br. Florentius. On behalf of our students, let me express my
gratitude to each of you who has assisted us in fulfilling the dream.
Achieving a dream often requires the help of many caring and compassionate individuals. In the Alumni Spotlight, you will
read about Brad Damphousse ’00 and his ingenuity in transforming web technology and social networking into a vehicle
which unites people in making possible their hopes and dreams.
Now at CCHS, it is time to look for new opportunities to strengthen “…the school we love…” and do so with a strong
commitment and perseverance. Let us work together to imagine new ways of creating a vibrant future for Central and
our students.
In Christ’s love,
Br. Richard J. Carey, FMS
President

T
he 76th Commencement of Central
Catholic High School honored the manifold accomplishments of 301 young men and
women who expended every collective ounce
of their energy, effort and enthusiasm over
four years to successfully write new and
memorable chapters in the storied history of
CCHS. Coming from 33 different cities and
towns, the nations of China and South Korea,
and diverse backgrounds and ethnicities,
the Class of 2014 distinguished itself with
achievements and leadership in academics,
active and responsive faith, the arts, sciences,
athletics, co-curriculars, and in the process
raised school and family spirit among all
four-year levels to exhilarating heights.
98% of the Class of 2014 will be furthering
their education at 123 different institutions
of higher learning in 23 states and the District of Columbia – with 2% honoring our
country with service in branches of military.
The members of the Class of 2014 accepted
over $12 million in scholarships for their college studies. 55% of the class participated in
7
6
8
Advanced Placement classes with 93.8% of
the AP students earning competency scores
or higher, compared with national competency results of 61% in the US and 72% in
Massachusetts. Sixty (60) graduates of the
Class of 2014 earned AP exam scores bestowing on them the designations of AP Scholar,
AP Scholar With Honor, AP Scholar With
Distinction and National AP Scholar.
The faith and compassion of the Class of 2014
is clearly witnessed by the 13,000+ hours of
volunteer service they selflessly gave to over
100 educational, social service and charitable
organizations. Through their efforts in the
Catwalk4Cancer Fashion Show to benefit
the Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber Cancer
Research, and the Christmas Project to help
50 local destitute families, the Class of 2014
raised nearly $50,000 this year, in addition
to the monies willingly sacrificed in the daily
Missions Collections.
The Class of 2014 set positive examples of
reverent involvement in the eight school
community masses held this year, prayed
the rosary after school in the Chapel, and
led various retreats and encounters for
underclassmen. And of course, through pep
rallies, leading the "Red Sea" of fans at games
and Spirit Week, they demonstrated the
astounding power of CCHS spirit.
In the arts, the Concert and Jazz Bands gave
stellar seasonal concerts raising the level of
their already strong talents, while the performing arts talents of the class were once
again magically displayed in the Theatre
Guild’s sold-out productions of “Once Upon
a Mattress” and “Valentines and Mistletoe.”
The largest Student Art Exposition ever held
at CCHS took place in May where nearly
every inch of the hallowed halls displayed
the painting, drawing, sculpting and photographic talents of the Class of 2014.
Led by the student-athletes of 2014, Raider
athletic teams claimed championship victories 12 times. The Raider Varsity Football
team, under head coach Chuck Adamopoulos, not only won the MVC League championship, but captured the first-ever sole

Track Team, in addition to the MVC title,
captured the Div. 2 MA State Championship
in a tight state meet. Raider Varsity studentathletes also took Merrimack Valley Conference Championship honors in Girls Soccer
(undefeated regular season 17-0), Golf, Boys
Basketball, Girls Basketball, Boys Ice Hockey,
Winter Cheerleading, Girls Outdoor Track
and Boys Lacrosse.
The Class of 2014 celebrated their Baccalaureate Mass on May 22 at St. Mary Church.
Witnessed by over 2,300 family and friends
in the CCHS Memorial Gymnasium, diplomas were awarded to the Class of 2014 by Br.
Richard Carey, FMS, President, at the 76th
Commencement Exercises on May 23. The
graduates were honored to be joined in celebration by members of the Class of 1964 as
they commemorated their 50th anniversary.
In a touching and deserving tribute, the Class
of 2014 dedicated their Florentian Yearbook
to the husband and wife team of Mr. Jarrod
Brown ’98, Math Teacher and Coach, and to
Mrs. Ashleigh Brown ’00, English and Performing Arts teacher.

riffin, Jon, Christina and thousands of others with
deeply personal stories of aspiration, compassion,
courage or need, have had their prayers answered by Brad
Damphousse ’00, their benefactor – of sorts.
In 2010, Brad Damphousse ’00, CEO and Co-Founder of
GoFundMe.com, along with his partner and friend, Andrew
Ballester, created and launched the world’s largest “crowdfunding” site. “Crowdfunding” is the practice of funding
a cause by raising small amounts of money from a large
number of people using the internet and social media. With
GoFundMe.com, ordinary people have the ability to raise
money online for important events in their lives such as
tuition expenses, medical bills, weddings, funerals, memorials,
volunteer missions, foreign travel, by openly inviting others
who care about their personal cause to contribute support.
Brad Damphousse,
Class of 2000
#CentralCatholic
A long line of family alumni, including uncle James Griffin
’47, cousin Roger Damphousse ’58, father Ray ’66 and
brother Jay ’97, led Brad to be eager to attend CCHS.
Rewinding to his days and lessons at Central Catholic, Brad
Damphousse ’00 recalls his burgeoning interest in digital
media and marketing being ignited by CCHS teachers and
classes. “The teachers and coaches at Central Catholic
never let you drop the ball – accountability, sincere effort
and good decorum in class and athletics, and in all you do
is one of the permanent hallmarks of the superb education
Central Catholic offers.”
In 1998, in the Website Design Class led by Mrs. Jodi
Linnehan-Kriner, Brad found himself appreciating the vast
potential of the rapidly expanding internet and envisioning
the benefits of exponential growth in personal computing
power. With his classmates, Damphousse amassed the
coding and programming skills to assist in creating
Central’s first website.
Damphousse speaks in the superlative of his math teacher,
Mr. Vin Pastore, and his influence on Brad’s personal development. “Mr. Pastore was a maestro when it came to getting students to toe the line and focus their energy and effort on the
subject matter. He always knew the right thing to say at just
the right time, quietly and tactfully, encouraging his students
to put forth energy and a diligent effort – yet masterfully,
he permitted enough fun to intervene with the serious. It’s a
lesson I carry with me today in my management style.”
#OnTheFrontier
In 2004, Brad joined a Boston advertising firm, but soon
found the bureaucracy and office politics to be stifling, and
was convinced that his passions were now beckoning him to
innovative projects in the new world of digital media. Saving
up a nest egg, he relocated to San Diego and took website
design work for small start-ups.
In 2005 at age 23, Damphousse found an intriguing design
position in a start-up company focused on consumer internet products. His design skills led him to being elevated
to manage a team of 30. His creative energies once again
were unfilfilled.
Damphousse, at 26, told himself it was time to start living
his own dreams and put all that he’d learned into creating
a novel venture in the world of web-based products. “I’m a
believer in the notion that the earlier you know what you
don’t want to do in life, the better,” explains Damphousse.
#AHAMoment
In 2008, wanting to save for a vacation with his wife, Brad
experienced difficulty setting up an online savings account.
He wondered wouldn’t it be great if there were an easy webbased savings account – and wouldn’t it be astoundingly
more beneficial if it gave others in your circle of family or
friends the ability to help you reach your financial goal?
Emblem / 9
In Brad’s CCHS senior year, the New Media Design major at
Boston’s Emerson College captured his nascent interests. He
found his groove there with a double major in both New
Media Design and Marketing, overloaded his class schedule
each term and graduated in three years. Damphousse is
clear on the sources of his intense motivation. “My academic
focus got serious when I arrived at Central Catholic, I
learned discipline, time management, and that there are
consequences when your effort is lacking. The lessons of
hard work, persistence, self-discipline and goal-setting
which I learned from watching my parents working two jobs,
then going back to school, raising children, taught me that
procrastination was not an option.”
Damphousse "rim-rockin" for the 1999
Raider MA State Championship team
“I thought that it should be very easy for family and friends
living in other parts of the country to come together
and, if they wished, contribute online towards any of
life’s important moments,” reveals Damphousse. A further
thought was a short leap – a web-based product of this
type, if it could be made practical – would allow anyone else
with an interest, not just family and friends, to contribute to
what is important to you in your life.
#WinningBusinessModel
Swayed by Damphousse’s vision in the Fall of 2008, Andrew
Ballester, a former hi-tech colleague, took the leap of faith
and together they formed a web business, “Create A Fund.”
With Damphousse in the designing and marketing role and
Ballester, the software developer, they experimented with
several iterations of the idea. “Create A Fund” eventually
evolved into an efficient fundraising vehicle for small nonprofits who would pay a subscription fee for the ability
to tell their story and raise funds via the worldwide web.
“Create A Fund” also offered a basic option for individuals
seeking web-based financial support for personal causes.
Over the course of the next two years, Damphousse and
Ballester, while fine-tuning “Create A Fund”, found that the
overwhelming usage of “Create A Fund” came from users who
flowed to the basic option. “Through successive iterations we
found our product-market fit. That’s the best way to discover
what your customers want,” explains Damphousse.
Recognizing this winning direction, in 2010 Damphousse
and Ballester re-branded and re-launched GoFundMe.com
to the world. With GoFundMe.com, an individual could
digitally express their personal cause online for the world
to see, set up an account, and then through various digital
media, such as Facebook, Twitter and email contacts, inform
family, friends and the general public of their request for
financial support.
For efficiency and ease of use by customers, Damphousse
and Ballester decided that GoFundMe.com would offer a
free sign-up to users, with only a 5% fee deducted in real
time from the money raised. Serendipitously, the online
payment industry had developed efficiencies, making possible seamless credit card payment options for consumers.
GoFundMe’s payment processor deducts a small service
charge from contributions and 30 cents per transaction,
again in real-time.
10 / Emblem
GoFundMe’s goal is to put the money in the pockets of the
user as fast as possible and with total transparency. The
user can withdraw funds directly to their bank account or
by check at any time. To earn the trust of every user and
distinguish itself from the emerging field of competitors, it
was important to Damphousse and Ballester that GoFundMe
make clarity, ease, and transparency absolutely paramount.
To emphasize this, GoFundMe offered a “5-minute guarantee”
from their customer service team – a real response from a
real person in 5 minutes or less.
Brad points out that being first in any field goes a long way
because you learn about your customers early on. As the
two entrepreneurs learned more about their users they were
able to give customers the best experience possible.
#ExponentialSurge
Since 2011 GoFundMe’s growth trajectory has been nearly
vertical. In 2012, GoFundMe raised $28.8 million for its
users, while in 2013 funds raised by users nearly quadrupled
to $130 million. Today, GoFundMe raises over $1.5 million
each day for personal causes. 2014 projections see funds
raised by users surpassing $500 million! The rate of growth
is so fast at present that the company doubles its monthly
donation volume every 6 months.
Damphousse understands that societal trends in the United
States have provided very fertile ground for GoFundMe’s
extraordinary success. Despite the fact that families are
more spread out than ever before, and also transient nature
of today’s work environments, the reality is that extended
families and personal friends still do love and care for each
other, and want to help in important matters of life.
#StayingOnTop
GoFundMe.com intends to remain a market leader. Damphousse is convinced by the evidence, “This is only the
beginning – the opportunity is massive because fundraising
is involved in so many aspects of our lives. We’ll continue to
improve GoFundMe so that our product is perfect for every
person, parent, teacher, coach, patient, volunteer, athlete,
artist and entrepreneur. We also expect to see greater
international usage as GoFundMe increases in popularity."
Named a finalist for “Entrepreneur of the Year” in 2013 by
Entrepreneur Magazine, Damphousse emphasizes, “At its
heart, GoFundMe.com is a story-telling platform that allows
people to invite family and friends to support one another
online. Donors are able to give in the most efficient and
targeted way possible – and in turn – are becoming part of
the story themselves.”
Brad is especially proud of the role GoFundMe.com played
in the recovery efforts of so many families in the Northeast
from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and the critical
assistance offered to individual victims of the Boston
Marathon bombings. His roots in New England remain
strong, as do Brad’s values, which took root in his family
upbringing and in his Marist education at Central Catholic.
To this day, Brad, as well as his wife and family, dedicate part
of their busy lives in the San Diego community as volunteers
in “Young Life” – a program that introduces high school and
college-age youth to the example and teachings of Jesus
Christ as a model for a life of true meaning.

Golden Anniversary –
50th Reunion of the Class of 1964
E
ach year as part of Commencement Week at Central
Catholic, the school community honors its Golden
Alumni Class with a gala celebration in recognition of the 50th
Anniversary of their CCHS graduation. This past May the
Class of 1964 gathered 34 strong on May 22-24 for three days
of renewing friendships, reminiscing and laughing about their
exploits in the “good old days” at CCHS, as well as catching up
on decades of life thereafter.
The celebration kicked off with a Golf Outing and Luncheon on
May 23 at the Merrimack Valley Golf Club, Methuen, followed by
an evening Cocktail Reception at Jocelyn’s Restaurant & Lounge
in Salem, NH, where remembrance and camaraderie continued to
be rekindled. On May 23 the Class of 1964 enjoyed a day revisiting
the CCHS campus, for many the first time since graduating, where
they were treated to a “welcome home” breakfast, walked the halls
of their alma mater and were incredulously proud of the Central
Catholic of 2014. At the 50th Anniversary luncheon, Br. Richard
Carey, FMS, CCHS president, awarded a Golden Anniversary
diploma and golden medallion to each ’64 alum. Returning in the
evening to the 2014 Commencement Exercises, the Class of 1964
was honored with special Golden Anniversary recognition at the
graduation ceremonies. Capping off the 1964 Golden Anniversary
festivities, 1964 classmates and their guests gathered on May 24
for the 50th Anniversary Reunion Dinner once again at Jocelyn’s
Restaurant and Lounge – truly a night to remember!
In a generous gesture of gratitude for the life-long benefits they
derived from their Central Catholic years, the members of the Class
of 1964 made a collective gift of over $25,000 in establishing the
Class of 1964 Endowed Scholarship which will provide immediate
tuition support for deserving CCHS students in perpetuity, with
promises to add to this fund over the years. The students of Central
Catholic will be forever grateful for this thoughtful scholarship gift!

Raider “Field of Dreams” Becomes a Reality
Like the cornfield in Iowa, it started with a dream. However,
Central Catholic’s “field of dreams”, the new synthetic turf
athletic field, lies on the corner of Hampshire and Auburn Street
in Lawrence. The dusty parcels, which for many years had been
home to the original CCHS wood-framed school building on
Auburn Street and the former Essex County Jail, have been
transformed into the new home for Central’s field sports. For
decades Central Catholic student-athletes had dreamed one
day of competing on their own home field on campus. Now that
dream has become a reality!
The new multi-sport synthetic turf field is the home field for
Central’s soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, freshmen, sophomore
and JV football teams and serves as a practice field for varsity
football, which continues to play its home games at Veterans’
Memorial Stadium in Lawrence.
Through the generosity of great friends, hundreds of alumni, our
students and Central Catholic families, the visionary direction
of school leadership, and the dedicated efforts of the staff of the
Raider Multi-Sport Synthetic Turf Athletic Field and Commemorative Terrace
Institutional Advancement Office, the $2 million Raider "Field of
Dreams” is now a stunning addition to Central’s athletic facilities. The entire Central Catholic community is sincerely grateful
and will always be indebted to each and every benefactor in our
Raider "Field of Dreams” campaign.
CCHS is profoundly grateful to Raider Field’s two major benefactors: the Telemachus A. and Irene Demoulas Foundation and
for the generous gift of $250,000 from Joseph ’87 and Samantha
Faro, Tuscan Kitchen and Market and Tuscan Brands. Extensive
support has and continues to come in from hundreds of alumni,
local businesses, students and past and current Central families.
“This fabulous addition to Central’s campus, and real gift to our
students for decades to come, could not have happened without
the foresight, kindness and generosity of so many good-hearted
people, and is testimony to the many individuals who over the
years believed and persevered in this vision,” acknowledged
Br. Richard Carey, FMS, Central’s president.

genuinely thrilled to play and practice on the new Raider Field with
the first varsity and sub-varsity games having taken place in October.
Lacrosse players are eagerly anticipating Spring competition on
Raider Field. Physical education outdoor classes will actively have
use of the field facility. “Our student-athletes and coaches are totally
excited and proud when they step on the field as it hits them that
this is a place the Raiders now call home. It is almost a sense of
disbelief that this beautiful, state-of-the-art facility is part of their
campus. Our alumni, too, are awestruck when they see it for the
first time,” effuses Ernie DiFiore, Central’s AD.
Central Catholic extends its sincere gratitude to the City of
Lawrence, Mayor Daniel Rivera and the staff of various city
departments, as well as to our neighbors in the Arlington District
for the encouragement and cooperation they have shown in this
important venture.
We invite all our alumni and friends to visit Central’s campus to
marvel at the new Raider Field, and perhaps take in a soccer, field
hockey, lacrosse or football game. Athletic schedules can be found

Investing in Excellence
Annual Giving – The 2013 –14 Central Catholic Fund
The 2013-14 Central Catholic Fund
experienced a banner year thanks in
large part to the generous gesture of
Albert C. “Al” Peterson ’50. Peterson pledged $50,000 to match new
and increased gifts to the Central
Catholic Annual Fund through June
2014. “Al” was pleased and proud to
complete his generous pledge as new
Albert "Al" Peterson '50
and increased gifts to the Central
Catholic Fund totaled $93,917. The Central Catholic community
extends its heartfelt gratitude and deepest appreciation to Al
Peterson for his challenge gift and for the generosity of thousands
of alumni and friends whose loyalty and affection for CCHS have
made the Central Catholic Fund FY 14 such a genuine success!
What is the Central Catholic Fund –
Investing In Excellence?
Unrestricted gifts to “Investing In Excellence” support every
aspect of Central’s premier signature college preparatory
curriculum, as well as CCHS’ commitment to the fine and
performing arts, athletics and the abundance of extracurricular
clubs and activities. The Fund, through restricted gifts, supports
students who are in need of tuition aid within the “Fulfilling the
Promise – Student Sponsorship Program."
All gifts made by Dec. 31 are
deductible on your 2014 tax returns.
The 2014–15 Central Catholic Fund has kicked off!
20 / Emblem
Gifts, large or small from alumni of all ages, parents and past
parents, as well as friends of CCHS will provide Central with the
ability to make the total educational experience more excellent
each year for every young man and woman. Our 2014-2015 fund
goal is a very ambitious $550,000. Every gift matters, every day,
to every student!
We can reach this goal only with your help. Please participate
by making a gift (no gift is too small!) to the 2014-15 Central
Catholic Fund by using the enclosed business reply envelope or
visiting us online at www.centralcatholic.net/give. Making a gift
every year, makes a difference every day! Thank you!

New Recurring Gift Op
S
A Convenient Way to Support CCH
“I meant to make a gift to Central Catholic but my life got so busy, it slipped my mind.”
There is an answer for this common lament. With the new Recurring Gift option,
supporting the Central Catholic Fund has never been more simple and convenient. The
Office of Institutional Advancement offers automated giving for those wishing to add
convenience and simplicity to gift-giving.
On the CCHS website, www.centralcatholic.net/give, a Recurring Gift option now
appears for anyone who may find this a convenient way to support CCHS. If you would
like to make an automated, recurring monthly gift, please fill in the information as
requested at www.centralcatholic.net/give and CCHS will set up your monthly gift.
Your recurring gift will be charged to your credit card automatically.
PLEASE NOTE: The “Start Date” is the date that your first gift will be charged to
your credit card. If you have any questions about setting up your recurring gift, email:
tstott@centralcatholic.net or call Tammy Stott at 978-682-0260 x635, Data Analyst/Office
Manager. Thank you for making CCHS one of your giving priorities!
1959, 1964 & 1971 Reunion Classes Reach
Forward With Endowed Scholarships
Class Reunions are always fun as classmates celebrate reaching back in time to
reminisce, share memories of exploits, friendships, teachers and unforgettable
happenings in and out of the classroom.
The Classes of 1959, 1964 and 1971 have found a way to create a legacy in their
reunions that reaches forward to ensure future Central Catholic students have
the opportunity to build similar memories and benefits during their years at
CCHS by establishing an Endowed Alumni Class Scholarship. An Endowed
Class Scholarship Fund, once it reaches $25,000, will perpetually endow a
partial scholarship to a deserving student each year. As the Fund increases, so
will the benefit to the deserving student in need. The Endowed Class Scholarship can be dedicated in memory of deceased members of the class or another
desired commemoration meaningful to the members.
On behalf of Central’s deserving students, we are sincerely grateful to the
thoughtful and generous members of the classes of 1959, 1964 and 1971.
