Volume No. 5 June 2013 Men’s Provision 1- Saturday 15 Melville v Reds What did you do at 8:30pm on Saturday night? Sure was cold wasn’t it? I always think its colder at hockey turfs than anywhere else and sadly I was proven correct as we ran onto the pitch at Melville to play our Prov 1 Mens game at 8:30pm. That’s 8:30pm start time, not finish time. We started really strong but let them back in the game later, probably because it was past half the teams bedtime. Given the time it was a great surprise that we not only had a team but 2 subs, with some much appreciated thanks to our late ring-ins (cheers Tom, Jack and Lachlan). We pulled a massive team selection surprise that left everyone guessing, especially our own team, with Gav starting at Left Half. He did a great job, but even at LH still Vets. managed to get a shot, with no less than his compulsory tomahawk. Goal of the Day? With 4 to choose from, this was a hard choice between Blake’s flick going in/off a defender and Dirtys baseline magic, but there was one goal that truly stood out. The others were good, but don’t deserve a full paragraph. Though my goal was good, really good. See what happened was I got the ball from the left and quickly swung around to hit it off my back foot towards the goal. It was such a quickly-taken shot that the goalie over-reacted and my snail pace shot managed to trickle over the line, and touch the side board with a very small boom. Right, where was I? Oh yeah, that was (really, really) good but the best goal was our fwd pressure on their fullback. He had no options, so tried to take on Prindi (bad idea), tried to offlay to his other fullback (worse idea) when Noel swooped in, intercepted and slotted it into the net …..If we had any spectators braving the cold they sure would have applauded the team pressure & effort. Cont So in the end we managed a 4-2 win and are happily sitting on top of the ladder, maybe. Not sure, as I still haven’t checked the new website. Probably should have checked it before posting this. Too busy. In fact on Sunday, I took my 3 year old son, Tim, to Kings Park on the weekend and he loved that dinosaur playground so much that when we had to go he carried on like a pork chop. Lucky for me, by playing Melville the night before I was hardened to incessant moaning, whinging and petty complaining. I will be playing in ear plugs next round.
