The 2013 California State Academic
Decathlon Competition
AcaDemic Decathlon is an international program that promotes the indepth study of selected subjects focusing on a central topic.
Teams are 3 ‘A’ students, 3 ‘B’ students & 3 ‘C’ or below students-chosen in Feb.
.
In California:
Approx. 500 high schools & 13,000 students are at the Regional Competitions in Feb.
Approx. 65 high schools & close to 600 students compete at the California
State Competition in March
Approx. 33 high schools & several individual teams compete at the National
Competition in April
Since national competition began in 1982, California has won 20 national titles and 12 second place finishes.
The California Academic Decathlon Competition subjects are:
Art
Economics
Music
Language and Literature
Mathematics
Science
Social Science.
In addition, Students: give a planned 4 minute Speech
and a 2 minute impromptu Speech, participates in a 7 minute Interview,
write a 50 minute Expository Es say.
● SCIENCE : The science topic will be an introduction to ecology and will include case studies and examples relevant to India.
● LITERATURE : The literature curriculum will include critical reading, one long work of literature, and selected shorter works. The long work of literature will be the novel Nectar in a Sieve by Kamala Markandaya.
● ART : The art curriculum will include a section on art fundamentals and will largely focus on the art and architecture of India.
● MUSIC : The music curriculum will include basic elements of music theory and will focus on the music of India.
● SOCIAL SCIENCE : The social science curriculum will cover the history of modern India.
● ECONOMICS : The economics curriculum will cover fundamental economic concepts, microeconomics, and macroeconomics and will also include a thematic section on the Indian economy.
● MATHEMATICS : The mathematics curriculum will cover permutations and combinations, algebra, and statistics.
Mountain Oaks has competed at State representing Calaveras County from 2002-
2011, 2014 & 2015

Probation
1st Semester: 10 Units IF cover 90+% of workshop lectures, assignments & contributions (partial units applied if lower coverage)
2nd Semester: 2.5 units IF we don’t win Regionals
4-5 units IF make State depending on team placement
All Jrs & Srs are eligible for 3 semester units for
$15 IF
Attend 90% workshops, complete assignments and attend the Fine Arts Day & Museum Field
