3 «« Superintendent’s Message
Greetings, Friend!
On behalf of Marine Military Academy and the Board of
Trustees, I am pleased to present the 2014-15 MMA Giving
Report & Year in Review.
Since 1965, Marine Military Academy has developed
disciplined, morally strong, college-ready young men who
are prepared for responsible leadership. Our work of helping
young men reach their full potential would not be possible,
however, without the generosity of people such as yourself.
The graduates of Marine Military Academy are not only
prepared for college, they are prepared for life. They are
young men of character, determination and service. Above all,
they are leaders. Our alumni become successful, productive
citizens who contribute to their communities and positively
shape our society.
Your gift truly makes an impact. Your gift truly does change
lives. Whatever you choose to give, THANK YOU for trusting
Marine Military Academy with the education of hundreds of
boys from across the country and around the world.
Semper Fi,
Col R. Glenn Hill, USMC (Ret)
Superintendent of Marine Military Academy

Remember the Cadet
A Cadet is the most important
person in our business; without
him, we do not have a school.
A Cadet is not dependent upon
us; we are dependent on him.
A Cadet is not an interruption of
our work; he is the purpose of it.
A Cadet and his family do us
a favor when they enroll; we
are not doing them a favor by
serving them.

Fall Registration
MMA checked in more than 200
young men the weekend of Aug. 1617, officially kicking off the 2014-15
school year. Ultimately, 256 young
men from 23 states and 17 countries
enrolled at MMA for the fall semester.
rooms, find their classrooms and way
around the MMA campus, meet their
drill instructors and members of their
company and begin to absorb Marine
Corps drill, terminology, customs and
history.
Cadets must arrive at MMA at least a
few days before the semester begins
in order to settle into their rooms,
collect their uniform items, visit the
tailor and barber, register for classes,
sign up for activities and complete
other necessary tasks before the first
day of class.
In addition, new cadets, known as
“plebes,” must also use these days
to grasp the new routine, learn how
to make their beds and clean their

Fifty-four plebes graduated from their

13 and became official members of the
MMA Corps of Cadets. The graduation,
which is normally held on the MMA
Parade Grounds, was moved to Yeckel
auditorium due to heavy rains.
At the ceremony, the young men took
the official oath of an MMA cadet
and then pinned the Marine Corps
insignia to their covers. Then the
newly minted cadets walked across the
stage and accepted their certificate of
completion.
After the graduation ceremony, the
young men enjoyed their first weekend
of liberty with their family members.

The weekend began Friday at the

Afterwards, parents had the
opportunity to meet the teachers and

The afternoon anniversary parade was

Veterans Day Parade
Nearly 100 veterans attended the
Veterans Day Parade Nov. 11. As
predicted, rain came down at the start
of the parade, but it did not dampen
the spirit of parade-goers.
People of all ages were present to pay
homage to America’s heroes, including
Uncle Sam himself! The Daisies and
Brownies of Girl Scouts Troop 4138
also gave every veteran a handcrafted
card prior to the parade.
All veterans joined Superintendent Col
R. Glenn Hill during the parade’s pass
in review and were honored by the
MMA Corps of Cadets. Many veterans
stayed after the parade to visit the Iwo

Cpl Harlon Block.

Mid-Term Registration
Despite the unusually heavy rains,
strong winds and low temperatures
that weekend, boys from across the
nation and around the globe received
a warm welcome at MMA’s mid-term
registration Jan. 10-11. MMA kicked
off the second semester Jan. 14, with a
total student population representing
23 states and 15 countries.
Cadets must arrive at MMA at least a
few days before classes begin in order
to collect their uniform items, visit
the tailor and barber, meet with the
academic counselor or registrar and
complete any other necessary tasks
before the start of the new semester.
New students or “plebes” must also
use these days to grasp the daily
routine, find their way around the
MMA campus, and start absorbing
the Marine Corps drill, terminology
and customs. Plebes must also spend
their first four weekends on the
MMA campus engaging in numerous
outdoor challenges, such as ziplining,
rappelling and physical training.
Sophomore plebes Tyler Ledbetter of Fort Worth,
Texas, (right) and Connor Somerholter of Austin,

Leadership Forum
MajGen James Lukeman, Commanding
General of Training and Education
Command for the Marine Corps,
shared his wisdom with the MMA
Corps of Cadets at the Leadership
Forum Feb. 13.
MajGen Lukeman asked the cadets a
simple question: “Are leaders born or
made?”
He never answered the question.
Rather, he gave a presentation that
included eight powerful quotes and
allowed cadets to figure out the
answer themselves.
Slide by slide, MajGen Lukeman recited
the following quotes to the cadets:
1) Leaders eat last.
2) The relation between officers and
enlisted men should in no sense be
that of superior and inferior nor that
of master and servant, but rather
that of teacher and scholar. In fact, it
should partake of the nature of the
relation between father and son, to
the extent that officers, especially
commanding officers, are responsible
for the physical, mental, and moral
welfare, as well as the discipline and
military training of the young men
under their command...
3) Winning is not a sometime thing;
it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win
once in a while; you don’t do things
right once in a while; you do them
right all of the time. Winning is a habit.
Unfortunately, so is losing.
4) The only battle we fight is for the
trust and affection of our men. They
win the rest.
5) Be honest. Do the right thing –
always. Leaders provide the moral
compass.
6) Treat every Marine or Sailor as if he
is the one who will save your life.
7) No better friend, no worse enemy.
8) War rubs the veneer of civilization
off you and leaves bare the character
underneath.
Every quote had an underlying lesson
in true leadership.
“Leadership is not a position. Leadership is what you do and how you act,”
he said. “Leaders have the right habits
of daily activity.”
MajGen Lukeman continued: “Live
life every day the right way. When
things get tough, character carries you
through it.”
He also told the cadets that they are
receiving lessons in leadership every
day at MMA.
“You may not know there is a grand
design to all that you do here, but
the leadership is being developed by
the day-to-day things that you do,”
he said.
MajGen Lukeman was commissioned
in the Marine Corps after graduating
from the University of Notre Dame in
1980. He was designated an infantry
officer and has served in infantry
command positions from platoon
commander to Commanding General
Second Marine Division.
He has also served in a variety of
staff positions to include Assistant for
Strategy and Force Planning with the
Office of the Secretary of Defense,
Chief of Staff for Marine Corps Base
Quantico, Military Assistant to the
Assistant Commandant, and Deputy
Director for Strategy and Plans, United
States Africa Command.

MJROTC Inspection
This year, 183 cadets, or nearly 71
percent, received an Outstanding
rating at the Marine Corps Junior
ROTC (MCJROTC) Inspection held Feb.
27. All five companies were inspected
as well as the MMA battalion staff and
color guard.
During this annual review, every
cadet is meticulously examined on
his grooming and uniform, and drilled
on his knowledge of Marine Corps
history, regulations, principles and
leadership traits. Director of the
5th MCJROTC Region LtCol Mark
Stroman, USMC (Ret), led the
2015 inspection.
Though all the companies scored
very high, Golf Company was
named Best Inspected Company
with a near-perfect score of 99.8.

Capt Gary Bust Dedication
On April 10, MMA dedicated the bust
of its late founding father Capt William
“Bill” Gary, USMCR (Ret). The bronze
memorial honoring Capt Gary is now
permanently located in the center of
the MMA quadrangle, in front of the
Headquarters building.
Among those present at the ceremony
were the MMA Corps of Cadets,
faculty and staff, board trustees
and advisors, and Harlingen city
dignitaries. The special guests were
Capt Gary’s daughter Kathy McCraine
and sculptor Bill Nebeker, both from
the Prescott, Ariz., area.
Before unveiling the bust of her father,
Mrs. McCraine spoke a few words
about him.
“My dad did many things in his life, but
he was most proud of the foundation
of MMA,” she said.
Capt Gary was a prosperous rancher,
land developer and home builder who
lived near Prescott, Ariz. Above all,
however, he was a proud Marine.
passing in January 2014. To this day,
MMA is still the only private school
in the world based on the values and
traditions of the U.S. Marine Corps.
In the early 1960s, Gary could not
find a Marine Corps-based school for
his adolescent son anywhere in the
country. Therefore, he set out on a
mission to start one.
Gary’s business savvy coupled with his
vision and military leadership led to
the opening of MMA in Harlingen in
September 1965. He was still just 40
years old when the doors opened. His
son, Bill Jr., was the first cadet enrolled
at MMA.
Capt Gary faithfully served on the

General H.M. Smith Dinner
Director of the Marine Corps
Capabilities Development Directorate
BrigGen William F. Mullen III received
the 2015 Iwo Jima Leadership award at
the H.M. Smith Dinner April 10.
Among his many achievements,
BrigGen Mullen was the Marine aide to
President George Bush and President
Bill Clinton.
Before accepting the award, BrigGen
Mullen talked about the importance of
investing in education and preparing
the youth for tomorrow’s challenges.
“Life’s tough. It’s not fair. There are no
easy breaks out there. You’ve got to
be tougher. You’ve got to know what
you’re doing,” BrigGen Mullen said.
He continued: “This is the kind of place
where we make tough people. We
make people that get out there and
lead no matter what ... they have the
toughness to keep going.”
BrigGen Mullen then specifically
addressed the cadets.
“What you get here, you don’t fully
value it right now. You can’t even
begin to value it until you put a couple
of years behind you, and you realize
how far ahead you are from the people
your age,” he said.
At the event, MMA also inducted two
individuals into the H.M. Smith Fellow
society: Judy Kutzenberger and CWO3
Edward Harris. Mrs. Kutzenberger has
been the MMA librarian since June
1992 and CWO3 Harris has served as
the drill instructor for Alpha Company
and the MMA band teacher since July
1998.
The late Richard L. Hosea Jr. of
Harlingen, Texas, was also inducted
in spirit for his planned giving to the
academy.

Alumni Reunion
Forty-one “brothers” returned to their
former home and alma mater for the
2015 Alumni Reunion April 17-18.
On April 17, the men enjoyed an
afternoon of activities at MMA. The
alumni, along with their family and
friends, first gathered at high noon
on Battalion Avenue for the MMA
Corps of Cadets pass in review and
then joined the cadets for lunch. Later,
alumni shared their stories and advice
with the Class of 2015 and then passed
out the senior pins.
Many more Leathernecks arrived in time
for the 2015 Alumni Reunion Parade,
and they all joined Superintendent Col
R. Glenn Hill for the ceremonial pass
in review. After the parade, the MMA
brothers gathered in front of the Iwo
Jima Monument for a commemorative
photo and then attended a reception.
On April 18, the alumni spent a
leisurely day at South Padre Island.
That evening, the men and their guests
gathered again for a dinner party at
the hotel.
At the dinner, Col Hill and military
artist Todd Krasovetz of San Diego
unveiled the “March Through Time:
Marine Military Academy 50 Years
of Excellence” painting. The painting,
which will be prominently displayed in
an MMA building beginning August
2015, was gifted to MMA by alumnus
Jorge Ramírez Tubilla, Class of 1995.
This year, the majority of the alumni
hailed from Charlie Company. Most of
the these men proudly sported their
hunter green company t-shirts that
weekend.

Spring Fling
The MMA Parents Organization hosted
2015 Spring Fling April 24-25. Each
year, the parents of the cadets are
invited to spend a weekend with their
sons in warm and sunny South Texas
and engage in some family activities.
On April 24, all parents and siblings
joined the cadets for morning colors.
Then they visited teachers and spent
the morning hours together.
At noon, the families of upperclassmen
attended the Junior-Senior Ring
Ceremony. At this event, the following
13 cadets were presented with their
MMA class ring: junior Christopher
Ballance of Houston; junior Lorenzo
Casso of Baton Rouge, La.; senior
Diego Espinosa Valdez of Monterrey,
Mexico; senior Brando Jacob Fematt
Rodríguez of Monterrey, Mexico;
senior Alfonso García Garza of
Monterrey, Mexico; senior Jinting
Jiang of Rancho Cucamonga,
Calif.; senior Jake Anthony May of
Galveston, Texas; junior Blake Moore
of Victoria, Texas; senior Clayton
Rhodes of Natchitoches, La.; junior
Charles Sanchez of Miramar, Fla.;
junior Robert Walter III of Fair Oaks
Ranch, Texas; senior Bailey Wilhelm
of Broken Arrow, Okla.; and junior
Joshua Williams of Dallas.
That night, cadets and family members
alike enjoyed a delightful show by
hypnotist Daniel James of Las Vegas.
The show starred numerous cadets.
The morning of April 25, some families
headed to the Back 40 to zipline,
rappel and/or play paintball. In the
evening, the cadets and their guests
first ate a barbecue dinner and then
hit the tables at “Casino Night.” All
the guests enjoyed a night of games,
prizes and gourmet desserts.

Eagle Scout Court of Honor
Four MMA Boy Scouts earned the
prestigious rank of Eagle Scout at the
Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony
May 22. In addition to the 21 merit
badges they needed to earn and the
board of review they needed to pass,
the scouts of Troop 22 also had to
complete an Eagle Scout Leadership
Service Project.
Jacob Bredenkamp of Bonaire, Ga.,
constructed a custom, three-piece
patio set for Calvary Christian School.
The school auctioned the outdoor
chairs and table at its annual event
for $900. Bredenkamp completed the
furniture project in just two weeks, in
time for the school’s Oct. 11 fundraiser.
Junior Robert Walter III of Fair
Oaks Ranch, Texas, built a flag
retirment facility for the Harlingenarea community. The facility, which
is located behind the Iwo Jima
Monument and near the gravesite of
Corporal Harlon Block, consists of a
brick patio with four benches and a
stone pit in the center.
Walter finished his “legacy” project
April 27 and officiated a flag retirement
cermony May 1.
Sophomore Lars Berggren of
Brownsville, Texas, made some
much-needed improvements to the
Family Crisis Center shelter. Berggren
built, painted and installed eight
large shelves in the supply closet
to maximize storage space. He also
constructed a portable shelving unit
for the second floor.

congratulated by Battalion Commander Alfonso García Garza of Monterrey, Mexico, a fellow Eagle Scout.
Berggren then made some small
repairs to areas of the shelter. He
completed the shelter improvements
and repairs May 2.
Junior Christopher Ballance
of Houston gave the residents of
Golden Palms Retirement & Health
Center a strong library. Ballance first
built a customized, media exchange
bookcase. He created special shelves
to hold large books and paperbacks
as well as CDs and DVDs. Ballance also
purchased a tower magazine rack.
Ballance then collected books,
magazines, movies and music to fill the
shelves of the bookcase and magazine
rack. He delivered the library May 15.

49th Commencement Exercises
Fifty-one young men walked the
stage at the 49th Annual MMA
Commencement Exercises May 23
in Yeckel auditorium. Richard Farr of
Schertz, Texas, was the valedictorian
for the Class of 2015 and Irvin Ie of
Temple City, Calif., was the salutatorian.
Director of Marine Corps Junior ROTC
Col Robert G. Oltman, USMC (Ret), was
the guest speaker for the occasion. Col
Oltman gave the cadets four rules to
never forget:
1) Never forget God. “Keep the focus
on him, and we’ll be blessed and
strengthened beyond our beliefs,” Col
Oltman said.
2) Don’t forget your core values.
“Never forget what they mean (honor,
courage and commitment) and how
you apply them in your daily life,” he
said.
3) Never forget that it’s O.K. to fail.
“Our failures define us more than our
successes,” Col Oltman said. “ It’s the
lessons that we learn that help us to
be successful.”
4) Never forget the true meaning
of success. “It’s not what you
accumulate,” he said. “It’s what you
do with what you accumulate.”
After listening to powerful speeches
by the valedictorian, salutatorian
and guest speaker, the 51 seniors
were awarded their high school
diploma. The event concluded with
the traditional tossing of the covers.
