Participant Spotlight
In this issue we spotlight Liz Barlow who
attended the NHET-Sim Workshop at the
East Gippsland Regional Clinical School
Bairnsdale workshop on February 27th &
28th 2013. Marnie Connolly facilitated the
Bairnsdale workshop.
Liz provides some comments on her
experience here:
“I found the workshops extremely
valuable and that they incorporated lots
of practical useful tips. The practical
sessions provided opportunities to have
feedback by colleagues on your
facilitation techniques. It was also great
to experience first-hand what it was like
to be a student again; always a
worthwhile refresher.
the teaching environment, with many
positive learning experiences than can
be had through this mode. The skills learnt
from the course are valuable to
simulation but are also transferable to
other areas of our practice.
Overall, a great course with lots of useful
and relevant information. Thank you for
providing the opportunity to participate,
particularly at a local level. It is a
fantastic opportunity for those of us that
work in regional areas to network and all
have an understanding of the barriers
faced in regional areas. Thank you also to
Marnie.”
One of the highlights for me would have
been the hands on simulation sessions. In
particular the fun and laughter we had
facilitating a learning session to the group
on how to do a dance. We chose the
“Chicken dance.” I can still picture the
guys trying to dance! Such grace and
style!!
Lessons that I will apply in my work are
the extra pointers I picked up regarding
providing feedback and the importance
of orientating participants to the
simulation environment.
The Bairnsdale NHET-Sim workshop in
action
I would recommend others to do the
course because of the practical and
relevant nature of it. Simulation is
becoming and increasing component of

NHET-Sim Faculty Profile: Leanne Rogers
Leanne facilitated the March 7th NHETSim workshops at Flinders University Rural
Clinical School in Renmark, South
Australia.
Leanne Rogers is a Clinical Simulation
Educator at Flinders University Rural
Clinical School in Renmark South
Australia. After working as a registered
nurse in Intensive Care and then in rural
health in a more generalist role Leanne
started a formal role in simulation nine
years ago.
Leanne’s involvement with the NHET-Sim
Program is primarily as a facilitator of
workshops although she was heavily
involved in the AusSETT Program
particularly with the development of the
content, on which NHET-Sim has been
based. So far Leanne has facilitated
workshops in Tasmania, Victoria and
South Australia with upcoming workshops
in South Australia and the Northern
Territory.
A highlight for Leanne has been sharing a
passion for simulation learning
environments and also increasing
participant’s knowledge about the
variety of programs conducted in rural
areas. With the funding from HWA and
the reporting requirements people are
interested in ways to engage in the use of
simulation in innovative ways such as a
High School Health Careers Workshop
which utilised a variety of simulation
equipment and environments to engage
students in simulation as a means to
promote health professions. Leanne finds
the NHET-Sim Program a really useful way
to fast-track learning rather than
participants having to use trial and error,
they can build on the learning of others.
The Program is a way for people to
increase networks and simulation
community collegiality. Leanne sees the
program as a way to introduce a shared
language to ensure common
understanding across jurisdictions.
Leanne reflects that in the planning
stages with HWA there were discussions
whether resourcing for the project
needed to look external to Australia, but
she felt there were enough experts in
Australia and is in awe of what we have
achieved and is excited to see it come to
fruition.

NHET-Sim Faculty Profile: Amanda Grauze
Amanda Grauze is the Medical Training
Manager at Medical Synergies as well as
working in her own business Medical
Training Solutions as an education
developer and facilitator. Medical
Training Solutions provides medical
training opportunities for medical
professionals in patient skills training.
Amanda hopes that the NHET-Sim
Program will aid in increasing the
numbers of high level instructors
nationwide and achieve a more
standardised workforce with a good level
of knowledge and understanding of the
benefits of simulation. Amanda finds the
program to be well thought out and put
together and is a comprehensive starting
point for many participants.
Medical Synergies Group designs,
develops and constructs skills and training
centres.
With a background as a registered nurse
with operating theatre and education
background Amanda has been working
predominately in the simulation field
since 1997. After being involved in
simulation for so many years Amanda
says it is an area you either love or hate
but that along with the hard work it is
good fun and an exciting way of learning
and you see the benefits time and time
again.
As a workshop facilitator for the NHET-Sim
Program Amanda has been involved in
delivering workshops at Ear, Nose and
Throat Centre and Central Institute of
Technology and will deliver workshops in
Bunbury in Western Australia and has
found positive feedback from
participants a highlight of delivering
workshops so far. She has also found that
it is good to be reminded of the
knowledge and experience that is
gained over time and that we can take
for granted.
