Overview of the workshop by Dr. Martin Shain: The new national standard has been greeted with enormous interest mixed with considerable concern about what it involves in practice. Some of these concerns revolve around the Standard’s legal implications, even though it is voluntary. In this session we will explore why this voluntary Standard came to exist (with a focus on the legal incentives that drove it) and what its implementation really means. Essentially the Standard specifies what a “psychologically safe system of work” should look like. In doing so, it invites those who are considering its adoption to treat the protection of mental health as a priority in the same Occupational Health and Safety framework as the protection of physical health. This is not a course to be taken without careful deliberation, but properly implemented the Standard is likely the most useful strategy around to improve the overall health and productivity of a workforce while helping to steer clear of the legal pitfalls that abound in this area.
