Introduction
You rely on your local and wide area networks to connect your people
and to connect your sites. You want functionality and reliability so that
you can work efficiently and productively. If you have business critical
applications you want be able to run them with the confidence that your
data is safe from intruders. You want to be able to send emails, browse
the web, and access applications or databases, and you want this to be
instant and hassle free.
BT networks deliver the vast majority of BT products & services, so we
can safely say that we understand business and what it wants, and we
understand networking solutions. As one of the biggest suppliers of
Private Circuits and other data services in the UK, BT cover the whole
spectrum of available networks across many different types of business.
We work with most types of organisation across every industry and
public sector, supplying and managing network solutions for tens of
thousands of customers. This experience, combined with a support
system of world class partners, allows us to create complete solutions –
all managed by BT. In fact, BT offers virtually no end to the amount of
bandwidth services you can have to support business applications or
solutions.
A comprehensive range of network solutions
BT Private Circuits provide dedicated, uncontended, bandwidth for a
company’s exclusive use. Delivered over either copper or fibre, they
guarantee instant connection, no dialling, no waiting and no engaged
signals, making them one of the most reliable, efficient, flexible and
secure networks around. And, because they are ‘always on’ you always
stay in control. They are extremely resilient and easy to manage.
Offering both Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint options,
throughout the UK, you can start with just two sites in your network and
add more sites as your business grows.
3
BT Private Circuits form an essential part of the business environment,
supporting key applications such as corporate data networks, email and
internet access. They offer great interoperability as they are protocolindependent, which is ideal if you want to manage your own networks or
introduce new applications. MegaStream Digital Private Circuits,
available from 1Mbit/s up to 622Mbit/s, have the facility to change
network configurations at will using modern, software-based multiplexers
or attachments, so they can be adapted should your business needs
happen to change. Ethernet Private Circuits offer you security, reliability
and a low cost of ownership, on a range of guaranteed circuit
bandwidths, from 0.2Mbit/s up to 100Mbit/s. By using common Ethernet
interfaces you can avoid the adaptation costs of connecting the service to
your existing routers and Local Area Network equipment. Ethernet
provides transparent bandwidth so that the traffic arrives at its
destination in exactly the same format as it left its source. What’s more,
distance independent pricing on circuit bandwidth makes this an
advantageous choice if you have sites which are some distance apart.
We at BT believe that we have the capability to develop and modify data
services as your business needs change over time, and as new
technologies become available. We also believe that we have the skills,
investment and sheer scale of network to sustain premium products and
services as business communications advance even further.
Our products and services have excellent UK coverage and you could be
up and running within as little as 25 working days of your order
(depending on choice of service). With a single network, controlled by BT,
you can rely on us to transport your voice and data traffic around the UK
as quickly and securely as possible.

Calculating the price of
a traditional private circuit
There are two charges for private circuits: an initial connection charge
plus an annual rental.
Traditional Private Circuit charges are calculated according to the link
between the local BT exchange and the customer’s site (local ends) and
the straight line distance between connecting BT exchanges (main link).

If both local ends for a private circuit are within the same BT local exchange area then there
is no requirement for a main link, thus charges are calculated for two local ends only.

If the local ends for a private circuit are within different BT local exchanges, then a main link is
required between the two exchanges, so charges are calculated on the main link plus two local ends.
Special main link rates apply when both local ends fall within the central
London zone, 0207 telephone area.
The annual charge varies according to the circuit type and the length
(part kilometres are rounded up to whole kilometres) and contract option
you choose. Details of the different types of private circuits and contract
options available are detailed in this booklet, together with prices.
All connection charges are subject to survey. Where the costs of providing
service are found to be above defined criteria BT will pass the charge on to the
customer. If the customer decides not to proceed then the order can be
cancelled without penalty. Details of the charges and exclusions are published
in the BT UK price list.
The minimum rental period for a Private Circuit is 12 months.

Ethernet Products
MegaStream Ethernet and BT Enterprise Ethernet provide guaranteed,
symmetrical, uncontended bandwidth between your business sites which
can be used in a number of ways to provide low cost ethernet
connectivity between your local and wide area networks. MegaStream
Ethernet can be used in isolation to provide point to point connectivity,
or to connect a number of remote sites to a single high speed ethernet
interface. Alternatively, MegaStream Ethernet can be used in
conjunction with BT Enterprise Ethernet to also include a number of
small remote sites in a point to aggregate network. (BT Enterprise
Ethernet cannot be used in isolation, it must always be used in
conjunction with MegaStream Ethernet.)
Ethernet services can be used to share data and to support applications
such as corporate email and internet access from a number of locations.
Main benefits:
• Lower cost of ownership: Service is delivered using plug & play
technology, using standard Ethernet interfaces which means you can
avoid the adaptation costs of connecting to your existing routers & LAN
(Local Area Network).
• Simple Pricing Structure: Metro pricing (within defined areas) and
National pricing structures apply. MegaStream Ethernet access pricing
is based on the radial distance between the customer site and BT
charging point. Core pricing (i.e. circuit bandwidth between charging
points) and all BT Enterprise Ethernet pricing is route based and
distance independent.
• Easy Bandwidth Upgrades: With a range of circuit bandwidths
available from 0.2Mbit/s up to a maximum of 100Mbit/s our Ethernet
portfolio offers the simplest of bandwidth upgrades; there is no need to
change your CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) or for an engineer to
visit your site. Circuit bandwidth changes take only a few days following
your order (subject to available access capacity), enabling the service to
meet your increasing bandwidth requirements efficiently with no need
to install more equipment or plan months in advance.
• Security: Service is provided solely over BT’s core network to support
guaranteed, symmetrical, uncontended bandwidth between your
business sites.
6
Key features
MegaStream Ethernet
• Flexibility. MegaStream Ethernet offers a range of fibre access speeds,

100Mbit/s, so you need only rent the bandwidth you require. With
point-to-point and point- to-multipoint options available, you can start
with just two sites in your network and add more sites as your business
grows.
• High availability. With protected fibre access options available,
together with BT’s protected and managed core network, MegaStream
Ethernet can provide your business with the high availability data
connections needed in today’s business environment.
• Extensive UK coverage: MegaStream Ethernet is available from over
100* network Points of Presence (PoPs), which offer excellent UK

which provides you with a new access option for MegaStream Ethernet.
Service is delivered to the customer’s remote site using BT’s copper
network, providing cost effective low circuit bandwidth connectivity
between a customer’s business sites.
• Simple. BT Enterprise Ethernet works transparently with MegaStream
Ethernet and is available in a point to aggregate (multi-point)
configuration where one end MUST ALWAYS be a MegaStream
Ethernet access circuit. This enables you to connect a number of
remote sites with a full range of bandwidth requirements to a single
Ethernet interface (dependant on fibre access speed and overall network
design).
• PromptCare maintenance: included within tariff.
Please refer to the BT UK Price List for Performance Scheme For Provision
for MegaStream Ethernet or BT Enterprise Ethernet services. All services
are sold ‘subject to survey’.
7
Pricing Structure
One aspect of an Ethernet delivered Private Circuit that is significantly
different from a standard Private Circuit is that there are separate prices
for Access and Core. Please refer to the BT UK Price List for further
information on charges and conditions for upgrades, downgrades,
internal and external shifts and other ancillary charges which may be
applicable to Megastream Ethernet and BT Enterprise Ethernet products.

Ethernet Private Circuits have separate prices for ACCESS and CORE
bandwidths:
ACCESS prices are calculated on each local end, dependant upon
fibre access speeds.
CORE bandwidth prices are calculated dependant on the circuit bandwidth
speed and the route. Where Customer Premises are served by the same
Network Charging Point, Metro prices apply. Premises fed off different
charging points but within London, Birmingham or Manchester, will also
benefit from Metro prices.
MegaStream Ethernet is available on 3&5 year Digital Individual Term
Contracts and NetStream Enterprise and NetStream Corporate
contracts. BT Enterprise Ethernet is not eligible for inclusion in any BT
discount schemes.
8
Access
Access pricing is dependent upon fibre going into the premises and the
access speed required. Each local end will incur Connection and Annual
Rental charges as shown in the Pricing Table below. A flat fee is applied
for connection charges.

Core
Service is provided at a range of circuit bandwidths, the defined
bandwidths are listed on the Ethernet Quick Quote Pricing Tool (for
internal use only, please refer to ‘Useful Contact Information’ for the
URL). NB. It is the customers responsibility to ensure that there is
sufficient capacity at each Access site to support the PVC (Permanent
Virtual Circuit). Each Access site may host one or more circuit
bandwidths.
Each circuit bandwidth provision carries a one off connection charge per
circuit. The BT Enterprise Ethernet Connection charge covers the
installation and provision of a BT Enterprise Ethernet circuit up to (and
not including) the MegaStream Ethernet Access circuit. The annual
rental for each circuit bandwidth depends on the route. There are 6
different tariffs per bandwidth dependent on the location of each end.
Metro tariffs apply to circuits fed off the same charging points, or
circuits within a designated metropolitan area (London, Birmingham or
Manchester). The tables below detail the annual rental for each
bandwidth and route. The Ethernet Quick Quote Pricing Tool should be
used for individual or network quotes. Please contact your sales or

Singleton & Multiple site fee explained
Singleton Site
Normally delivered using copper and most suitable for low volume
provision (1 or 2 circuits). A customer can have more that one service to
a Singleton site, but any subsequent circuits will be charged at the
Singleton site rate, currently £3,500 per end. If copper delivery is not
technically possible the site will have to be classified as a Multiple site.
Multiple Site
Normally delivered using optical fibre or radio if appropriate. This
method is most suitable when the customer thinks they are likely to
order more than one digital wideband service at this site. Multiple site
connection fees are raised only once at a site and are currently £9,000
per end. Subsequent circuits to the site are charged at additional circuit
rates, currently £750 per end.
Deemed Multiple Site
Deemed multiple sites are those sites with a MegaStream already in situ
prior to 31st December 2001. A customer will only receive the additional
circuit charges for subsequent circuits on Sites where a fibre delivered
service has been provided prior to 31st December 2001 for 2Mbit/s
products. A customer may only receive reduced rentals on Sites, where a
Site Fee has been paid.

Business Continuity
Many businesses still do not have a basic plan to mediate the effects of a
disaster should one occur. In today’s 24-hour customer service oriented
market place business continuity is essential. The advance of e-commerce
has created unprecedented demand for constantly available critical systems.
Guidelines from the government are that all FTSE listed companies must
announce whether or not they have risk management plans in place. The
guidelines are based on recommendations in the Turnbull Report
produced by the Institute of Chartered Accountants. The report states
that public limited companies should be required to minimise
operational risk. This includes planning for business continuity if their
telecommunications technology fails.
As the supplier with all the resources, expertise and solutions that
business customers need, BT is able to offer a comprehensive portfolio
of Business Resilience solutions to suit individual customers.
Site Resilience Services
CitySure & CircuitSure provide the facility to set up one or more
contingency plans in the event of a business affecting occurrence.
They can divert a private circuit from one site to another and restore
to the original site after the disaster.

Circuit Diversity routing. The level of protection of private circuits
depends on the degree to which they are kept apart. This service allows
circuits to be safely routed along different paths through the BT network.
A number of different options are available, depending on the criticality of
circuits and the availability of the separate routes in BT’s network.
All prices quoted are exclusive of VAT unless otherwise stated.
22
Circuit Diversity.
This service is for a pair of circuits. There are two levels available:
(i) End to End Circuit Diversity is the most secure level of protection
because it ensures that the specified circuits are physically routed
completely apart through BT’s network, so there are no common
exchanges, interconnection points or cable sheathing.
(ii) Main Link Circuit Diversity ensures that circuits take completely
separate physical routes between local serving exchanges. There are no
shared cables or interconnection points on the main link – only the local
exchange and connection to the customer’s site are shared.
Basic Diversity is an inexpensive solution for less critical private circuits.
This option ensures that specified circuits are not routed over the same
cables or transmission systems, though they may share the same local
exchanges and one or more interconnection points. This service is for a
pair of circuits.
Multiple/Circuit Diversity – This is where one circuit is kept apart from
a group of different circuits, or a group of circuits may be kept from
each other. The level of protection available is dependant upon the
availability of routes in BT’s network.

Discount Contracts and Packages
There are a range of contract options available to customers in the UK.
Term-Based Contracts
– Individual Term Contracts are applied to single circuits and they offer
a discount on the prevailing circuit rental price. Terms of 3 & 5 years
are available and the rates are defined by the term and the type of
circuit.
