Requirements
Pre-eminent publisher of undergraduate and graduate level textbooks seeks associate editor.
The successful candidate will:
Acquire, develop, and publish first edition textbooks and revisions of
bestselling backlist titles.
Propose projects to editorial board with complete narrative, including analysis
and assessment of competition, author track, content and organization, relevance to
specific courses, market, and fit with list. Assess financial risk and propose reasonable
signing terms.
Negotiate contract terms and determine optimal book schedule.
Coordinate peer review process and assess market feedback. Direct author
writing process and coordinate manuscript development efforts.
Prepare and transmit finished manuscripts to production.
Participate in marketing planning. Assist with writing catalog, back cover, and
other marketing copy. Provide materials and information, as needed, to marketing and
sales.
Maintain schedules and editorial files.
Attend editorial, marketing, and other meetings. Attend academic
conferences.
Required Background:
Bachelor’s degree or higher required.
Solid acquisitions track; two (2)+ years acquisitions experience.
Proven knowledge of textbook market.
Demonstrated expertise in two (2) or more social science disciplines.
Excellent communication skills, as the job requires considerable author contact
and staff teamwork.
Articulate, imaginative, professional, and deadline-oriented.
Strong project management and decision-making skills.
Rigorous attention to detail, strong work ethic, and excellent organizational
and writing skills.
Ability to professionally represent company.
Familiarity with Microsoft programs—including Excel and Outlook—required.
