In Touch With The Pastor It is hard to imagine we have spent nearly half a decade pursuing a "Church of Great Expectations" vision and goals. God has richly blessed us and given us strong effective leadership. From the start, although we had high hopes, we knew that some would not come along side of us. So, we gave them room to sit on the sidelines and complain. Still, we decided it was God's will, not our own or even that of the Pastor, we were seeking to fulfill. Just look where God has brought us from. We are truly becoming the Church that God wants us to be. Each one of us is on the road toward our fullest potential. We do have reason to celebrate118 years of faithful Christian service in this community. Praise God for each one of you. You have made a significant difference. The Church continues to grow in numbers and in strength. More and more people are participating in Bible Study and Prayer Meeting. We have baptized more new members than have come from other churches. New babies have been blessed. Men and women are still eager to get married. Leaders are stepping up, taking responsibility, and being held accountable. As the Body of Christ, we are functioning more and more as one. Fingers are not going around as if they do not need hands and eyes are remembering that they must work together with ears and noses for the good of the whole. We do celebrate in the words of the Psalm 133: "Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in Unity." It is our pleasure to welcome all of the pastors and congregations from across our community. We have special guest pastors from Missouri and California that have come to share with us. Just to have you here brings great joy to our souls. We renew our commitment to be the best that we can be, to accept the heritage God has provided for us, and to live so that God gets the glory in our lives. Thank you so very much. Let's keep on praising God from whom all our blessings flow! -2- Church history By the 1890’s, Salt Lake City’s small Black population had gained sufficient enough numbers as to encourage the formation and support of independent institutions that provided African-Americans with the opportunity to give greater meaning to their lives. In addressing their spiritual needs, a group of Blacks who identified themselves as the Baptist Prayer Band, met and held worship services in their homes. By 1892, the “Baptist Prayer Band” was clearly established as “The Calvary Missionary Baptist Church” and identified as the “little colored house of worship in the alley.” In June of 1896, Reverend A. E. Reynolds announced in the “Broad Ax” (a Black newspaper) that a building located in the rear of a white church was available as a place of worship for Black Baptists. January, 1898, Reverend D. Jones arrived in Salt Lake City from Topeka, Kansas to pastor Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. He was replaced in 1901 by Reverend J. W. Washington, an energetic person whose leadership was instrumental in the church’s growth during his tenure. On Sunday, June 29, 1902, the pastor and members of the congregation gave an afternoon and evening reception at their new chapel located at 472 East Second South. In 1911, the Eastside Baptist Church site was purchased by the Calvary congregation from Immanuel Baptist Church. The first services were held on February 5th at the 679 East Third South location. Reverend Allen Newman, pastor of Calvary from 1913 to 1915. In 1921, under the leadership of Reverend George Hart, the Calvary Baptist Church was incorporated by the State of Utah. Between 1924 and 1954, Calvary had eight pastors. In 1951, the Articles of Incorporation were revised and approved by the membership. The Reverend William I. Monroe served as pastor of Calvary from 1954 to 1967. During his tenure, the church membership made great strides in terms of its membership and financial condition. On November 3, 1966 the Calvary congregation joyfully marched from their former worship place at Third South and Seventh East to their new place of worship at 532 East Seventh South. Special services culminated the activities of this day. In 1974, Reverend France A. Davis was installed as pastor of Calvary. Pastor Davis has served the congregation for a longer period than any of his 22 predecessors. During his tenure, Calvary has continued her ongoing mission. Pastor Davis and the Calvary congregation dedicated Calvary Towers, a low-income senior citizen housing complex adjacent to the church at 532 East Seventh South on July 30, 1989. Under Reverend Davis’ tenure, many improvements have been made. The 10/36 Scholarship Plan was initiated in 1992. The goal is for each member to contribute $10 per month for 36 months to endow a scholarship account to enable the church to substantially further the education of our youth by providing financial assistance. Church pews were padded in 1993 to aid in the comfort of our visitors, friends and members and in 1993 a public address system was installed complete with speakers, monitors, sound board, double cassette recorder-player deck and microphones to assist in making the ministry available to all. Pastor Davis, with support of the congregation, earned a Masters of Ministry Degree. The membership and visitors continue to increase resulting in seating and parking problems. In 1994, an 8:00 a.m. worship service was added to alleviate the problem. -3- Church history (continued) However, as our members continue to thirst for knowledge about Jesus Christ, many stay through to the 11:00 a.m. service. By the fall of 1995, it was apparent the Church had outgrown the 532 East 700 church site. The membership voted approval to purchase land and build a larger church facility. Each member was asked to pledge and give accordingly as the Lord blessed them. In 1996, God blessed us to secure approximately 2 1/2 acres of land and we have constructed a 47,000 square feet church facility at 1090 South State Street. This has provided the congregation with adequate space for worship, education, community and recreational activities. The official dedication was in November, 2001. We are enjoying what Dr. Robert Fowler calls a “First Class” facility. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. With more than 600 members and many more attending, the congregation continues to meet spiritual needs first and foremost while also helping people wherever they hurt. Since everybody is welcomed, our congregation is more and more diverse with a distinct African American style of worship. We lift our voice in praise and trust God to speak to our lives. In recent years Calvary had an exciting youth oriented revival as part of our annual week long revival. The early morning Thanksgiving worship service followed by a complete Thanksgiving Dinner with smoked turkeys and all of the trimmings was enjoyed by all who attended. Our reading and tutoring programs continue to grow and we added “Success Maker,” a program for those advanced beyond the Waterford Program. We have implemented the Waterford Program in private homes thereby providing computer access to young children who otherwise would not have access. We are offering Spanish classes as the demand arises. Calvary was designated as the location for Utah Reaching Out, which was a state funded program implemented for assisting our Katrina families. Zion’s Bank continues to support two full-ride college scholarships administered by Calvary Baptist Church. Thanks to the generous donations of the Paul Millsap family, we are administering the Paul Millsap Scholarship, a source of funds that supports an ever increasing number of students seeking a college education. Our Sound Ministry is now providing CD’s and DVD’s of each service and church membership grows as does our spirit and maturity. We continue to baptize new members and equip our disciples. Since 2007, Calvary Baptist Church has been striving to be a Church of Great Expectations. We developed long range goals planned through 2012 with special emphasis to a) encourage our youth b) take care of seniors c) train for accountability and d) identify and utilize the gifts God has given us. “Leading like Jesus” bible study and other leadership classes are available and we invite you to join us in moving on up to “Newness of Life” and read about us on our website (http://www.calvaryslc.com). Nobody can deny that God has brought us a long way. Thank you for your support and participation in the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. We are truly blessed to be a congregation that is “ALIVE AND WELL.” GOD BLESSES!!!!!!!!!!! -4- Pastor Charles T. Wright Embry Chapel Church Ogden, Utah Rev.
