Clearwing Productions was contracted by Audio Video Resources (AVR) to assist
them with the audio system overhaul at ASU’s Wells Fargo Arena. The six story
tall arena is used for basketball games, concerts, assemblies and graduations.
Over its nearly forty years of service, the Wells Fargo arena has had several sound
reinforcement systems, all of which lacked power and were unintelligible to one
degree or another. The new system needed to cover all of the 14,000 seats,
providing impeccable intelligent reproduction of the audio source throughout.
After consulting with the ASU Athletics Department, a new system centered on
Danley Sound Labs full-range loudspeakers and subwoofers, and powered by Lab
Gruppen amplifiers, were chosen. The solution consisted of twelve arrays, along with
a delay ring of ten individual speakers to cover the area around the stadium banners
and three down-firing cabinets for the court. The engineers at Danley Sound Labs
designed the system in consultation with Anthony James Partners’, Director of Audio
Engineering, Larry Lucas.
Clearwing removed the existing amplifiers, speakers, rigging, processing and the
abandoned front of house gear. Installation of the speakers then proceeded after
all engineered mounting hardware was installed. In order to do this, three hundred
sheets of plywood were laid out to protect the floor from two 80’ articulated boom
lifts that were needed to access the low steel. The Clearwing team provided the
structural engineering, coordinated all riggers, electricians and installers, placed
speakers and ran new conduit for signal wire from the existing amplifier room to the
new speaker locations.
”The Danley engineers took the wire frame of the arena and optimized loudspeaker choice and placement
in EASE. The experts at Clearwing Productions turned those plans into reality, a process that was expedited
by their familiarity with the rigging at Wells Fargo Arena. Clearwing Productions is frequently contracted to
do the staging for events at the Wells Fargo Arena.”
