Young and R.A. Freedman, 12th Edition, Addison-Wesley. Prerequisite: MAT 1203 and PHYSICS 1903 completed with a grade of C or better. Course outline: PHY 1923 is a second-semester calculus-based introductory physics course for engineering majors. The course deals with electricity and Magnetism, Optics and Thermodynamics. The lecture emphasizes concepts and problem-solving techniques in chapters 17 through 36 in the textbook. Partial Exams: Four partial exams will be given and the best three scores will be used to compute the final grade. There are no makeup exams. Partial exams include conceptual questions and analytical problems. Calculators and any other Electronic gadgets are not allowed to solve exams, Partial Exam 1 (tentatively Ch. 21-25) Partial Exam 2 (tentatively Ch. 26-30) Partial Exam 3 (tentatively Ch. 31-36) Partial Exam 4 (to take place the day of the final) will cover tentatively Ch. 17-20. Reading: This is a fast-paced course covering at least one chapter per week. Students are expected to read no less than 2 chapters in advance to better assimilate the material and be in a position to ask pertinent questions in class. Home Study: A good rule of thumb in college is that students need to study on their own 3 hours for each hour of instruction, thus, in this case, students should study at home (or otherwise) no less than 9 hours per week. Homework Must turn in at least 70% of the homeworks for a 10-point credit (NOTE: zero points otherwise). Students will be given an extra credit of 10 additional points if all the homeworks are turned in. Weekly homework problems will be assigned and posted in the website. No late homework is accepted. Exams Three best-grade partial exams (dropping the lowest grade out of 4) (30 % x 3 = 90 %). NOTE: If only 2 tests are taken, each test will only be given a maximum of 20 points. Extra Credit Extra credit activities, if any, will be outlined in class during the semester. Extra credit ONLY applies after taking three tests. The rule also applies to extra credit for homeworks. Grades 90 ≤ A ≤ 100, 80 ≤ B ≤ 90, 65 ≤ C ≤ 80, 55 ≤ D ≤ 65, F < 55 There is no other curve. Scholastic dishonesty: Students who violates the scholastic dishonesty codes will be given an F for the course and will be reported to the University. The University may give additional penalty to the students. Scholastic dishonesty includes cheating in exams or copying other student’s homework.
