Course Information: Course Prefix/No. CSC 110-OL01 Course Name Introduction to Computers Credits 3 Lecture/Lab 3/0 Course Description: The Winterim session of the Introduction to Computers class is a compressed and intense course covering the same information in the normal 16 week class. The course consists of an introduction to microcomputer hardware, operating systems, application software, and navigation of the internet. Students will learn to manage system hardware and system software, as well as information needed to maintain a computer system. Students will enter, modify, and manipulate data with word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation programs. Students should be familiar with the standard keyboard. (3/0) Prerequisites: This course is designed primarily for beginners. No prior knowledge of computers is necessary. You will not need to be an expert typist, but familiarity with the computer keyboard is essential. All students are expected to have their own copy of the book before the beginning of the class. Failure to have the book will make it difficult to successfully complete the class. Any student who does not have a book is strongly encouraged to consider withdrawing from the course. Materials and Supplies to be furnished by Student If you are not using your own computer, a flash memory stick (sometimes called a flash drive, jump drive, memory drive, thumb drive, or USB drive) should be available to store your files. If you choose not to do this, you can store your files in ROC/Joule in the My Private Files area. Microsoft Office 2010 Software The course is designed to use Microsoft Office 2010 Professional software to complete the application training portion of the course. The use of previous Office versions, such as Office 2003 or 2007, is not allowed. Use of other versions of the software such as Miscrosoft Office 2010 Student Version, or the Microsoft Office version for the Mac is discouraged. The applications and or features within the Microsoft Office 2010 Professional version are not available in the previously mentioned versions of the software. The Microsoft Office 2010 software bundled with the textbook contains the needed applications and features needed for successful course completion. Course Learning Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: A. demonstrate the use of hardware and operating systems B. practice navigation of the Internet C. illustrate the use of application software Course Practices: The syllabus serves as a contract between the faculty and the students. This section contains the kinds of practices that are expected of students: 1. Attendance Requirements Students are expected to participate in the class by turning in the required assignments in accordance with the course schedule found toward the end of this document. Introduction to Computers – CSC 110 Winterim Page 3 Attendance for a class session will be assumed when the student turns in a completed assignment in electronic form to the appropriate electronic drop box in the course Learning Management System (Joule). Instructors are responsible for developing and implementing their own system and forms for recording class attendance, which may be checked and verified by sources from both on and off campus. These include, but are not limited to, Iowa Western Community College Student Services personnel, the Veteran’s Administration, federal, state, county, and private human services agencies, and scholarship granting organizations. This policy is subject to the limitations of The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Regular class attendance is strongly encouraged. The course does not stop for holidays. Assignments will still be required to be worked on and submitted on time. 2. Standards for written work All course assignments are to be done using MICROSOFT OFFICE 2010 software. No other software can be used to complete the assignments in the course. Older versions of Microsoft Office are not to be used for the course as they will not have all the features that are available in Miscrosoft Office 2010. All course assignments should be proofed for proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. 3. Late papers and assignments All assignments, in-class activities and examinations are posted in ROC/Joule in the course syllabus. Student Data Files for the course can be found in ROC/Joule. Students are expected to complete all class assignments and examinations on time. Assignment files are to be placed in the appropriate major application and “Drop Box” in ROC/Joule. Assignments are due on the date indicated (see page 11 of the syllabus). No Printouts are required for this course. Late assignments will not be accepted. Failure to turn in an assignment by the due date will result in a zero (0) for that assignment. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS to this. Please do not ask. It is the responsibility of the student to start on assignments prior to the due date and time, and to allow for any possible delays. All assignments and the date the assignment is due are posted on ROC/Joule. Failure to complete/pass all assignments and/or exams may constitute failure of the course. They may consist of multiple choice, short answer, essay questions, and/or hands-on application. There will be no makeup of unit exams without prior notification [BEFORE the exam STARTS] to the instructor. 5. Extra Credit Extra Credit is not offered. Please do not ask. 6. Participation Participation will be submitting assignments, completing quizzes and exams to the appropriate drop boxe and quiz submission area in Joule 7. Course Communication The official mode of communication within this course is through ROC. “Texting” terminology is unacceptable –use proper English. The instructor will normally answer ROCmail during business hours – 8:30am through 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. Imagine your message on a billboard. Anything you send can be forwarded, saved and printed by people it was never intended for. Never send anything that will reflect badly on you or anyone else. Do not give out personal information. 2. Remember that company/school emails are company/school property. Emails sent from your workplace can be monitored by people besides the sender and reader, and are technically company/school property. 3. Avoid offensive comments. Anything obscene, libelous, offensive or racist does not belong in a company/school email, even as a joke. Respect and accept people’s differences. 4. Keep your message cool. Email messages can easily be misinterpreted because we don't have the tone of voice or body language that gives us further cues. Using multiple explanation points, emoticons, and words in all capital letters can be interpreted as emotional language. 5. Be careful about forwarding messages. If you aren't sure if the original sender would want to forward the message, don't do it. 6. Don't expect an answer right away. Email messages may be delivered quickly, but your recipient may not read it right away. Introduction to Computers – CSC 110 Winterim Page 5 7. Don't sacrifice accuracy for efficiency. Don't send sloppy, unedited email. Experts say that for every grammar mistake in an email, there's an average of three spelling mistakes. While the odd spelling mistake is overlooked, when your readers have to break communication to decipher a word or message, at best, you'll look sloppy, if not illiterate. At worst, they may stop reading. 8. Include the message thread. Keep the original message for a record of your conversation. However, when sending a new message to the same person, start a new thread with a new subject line. 9. Don't type in all CAPS. It's perceived as YELLING. However, don't write with only small letters, as this is perceived as your being lazy, because it makes it more difficult for people to read. Avoid “text messaging” – use proper English; complete sentences with proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. 10. Write clear, organized messages, with a subject line that gives enough information for the reader to file it and find it later. Instructional Techniques and Practices This course is structured in five distinct and separate sections. They are as follows: 1) Computer Hardware, Software and Internet Navigation, 2) Word Processing, 3) Spreadsheets, 4) Databases, and 5) Presentation software. Each section is treated as a separate unit for testing purposes. Lecture: Due to the nature of on-line learning, lecture information is found in the appropriate Joule section. Homework: Reading, review exercises, and laboratory assignments. Lab hours and notices of lab closings are posted on the door. However, these policies are for all classrooms that contain computers. Violation of any of the following rules of conduct may result in a temporary or permanent suspension of your computer lab privileges. Please conduct yourself accordingly. Please also see your Student Handbook for complete policy rules. Any currently enrolled student, staff or faculty member may use the computer lab. Children are not allowed in the lab. Our microcomputer labs should be kept clean at all times! Waste paper must be disposed of properly. Please use blue recycle bins for waste paper. EVERYONE must sign in and out. Each user must have a data storage device. No FOOD, DRINKS, OR DRINK CONTAINERS are allowed. No SMOKING OR TOBACCO products are allowed. No violation of applicable software licensing agreements or copyright laws. No violation of copyright laws and their fair use provisions through inappropriate reproduction or dissemination of copyrighted text, images, etc. No outside software programs may be used in any lab. This includes, but is not limited to, programs known as computer viruses, Trojan Horses, and worms. No hardware or software is to be installed on any computer by the user. No unauthorized use of a computer account or a Campus Network to gain unauthorized access to any computer system is allowed. No attempts to circumvent data protection schemes or uncover security loopholes or knowingly or carelessly performing an act that will interfere with the normal operation of computers, terminals, peripherals, or networks. No copying, changing or deleting another user’s files. No downloading or displaying of obscene, lewd, or sexually harassing images or text. No transmitting or reproducing materials that are slanderous or defamatory in nature or that otherwise violate existing laws or school regulations. No connection of unauthorized equipment to the network. No wasting/overloading of computing resources, such as printing too many copies or pages of a document.
