Smoking Candy? Really?
What is Jenkem?
…or Butt Hash?
Are kids in Florida inhaling the fumes of their own feces to get high?
Police in Naples, Fla., are on the lookout for users of "jenkem," a
homemade drug created by allowing human urine and feces to ferment in a
bottle with a balloon covering the opening. Users inhale the released
methane gas from the balloon to get a "euphoric high similar to ingesting
cocaine, but with strong hallucinations of times past," according to a Collier
County Sheriff's Office bulletin.
The downside: "Subjects who used the jenkem disliked the taste of sewage
in their mouth and the fact that the taste continued for several days."
Sounds too gross to be true, right? Well, maybe.
Jenkem is real. If you're down and out and looking for kicks it’s legal!
It is something we want to keep on top of. The same sort of thing happened
when we first heard of kids huffing freon or whippets [nitrous oxide, often
found in whipped cream canisters]," he said.

If it’s ‖real‖ to them it should be a
real concern for the adults too.
Adults must learn how to
talk so they’ll listen, but
more importantly – adults
must learn how to listen so
they’ll keep talking!

may be just one
person, but to one
person you may be
the world.“

Why Do Kids Do This?
Some do it for the high which can
become addictive. Others do it because
it's "cool" and risky. Most of the kids who
have died from this were not children in
trouble. Most were well liked, active,
intelligent, stable children who wanted
nothing to do with drugs or alcohol. This
was an activity they felt was
safe. Children have no clue about the
physiological principles involved and
need to be told by the adults in their lives
how dangerous this is.

Playing this game in any form
causes the permanent and
cumulative death of large
numbers of brain cells. The
variation in blood pressure
may also cause strokes,
seizures, and retinal damage.

Did You Know…
• In 2005, the choking game alone killed around 66 kids across
the country (Keep in mind, these were the only ones reported.)
• These kids were usually between 11 and 18. Some as young as
7.
• This game kills brain cells as well, and it only takes one time.
• “Tragically, some 1,000 youths each year accidentally strangled
themselves while playing The Choking Game“ (source- Readers
Digest Feb. 2006)
• “Each year, nearly twice as many children unnecessarily die
after playing this morbid game than soldiers killed in action in
the Iraq War.” (Source- The Lonoke Democrat Feb. 2006)

Let’s talk about
alternatives….
•
•
•
•
•
coping skills (recommendations)
skill building
self esteem
peer pressure
what are your suggestions?
So what do we do?
Arm ourselves with information.
Prevention Education is a must – but where do I get
it? How do I share it? How can others get it?
Talk to youth. Ask ―those‖ questions!
Be attentive to what’s going on in local areas as
well as nationwide. (internet is a big deal)
Don’t be afraid to ask about stuff you hear, but
don’t know what it means.
Local Prevention Organizations can provide
resources and information. FTC Prevention Services can be
a resource for you…
Protective factors should include:
Areas that affect Family positively
(strengthening families)
Ideas about School Climate (positive)
Choosing positive Peers to associate with…
Understanding that my Environment doesn’t
dictate who I have to be!
Societal Issues may arise but I’m equipped with
coping skills
I am my own Individual! I’m responsible for me!

Do you know who to call?
Service Providers?
• What agencies offer counseling specific
to the issue?
• What agencies in the immediate area
provide services (including family support, etc)
• Licensed (credentialed) personnel
available
• Facilities in area to house… (residential)
• Directory of service providers available?
Who Said?
• You have the power to influence change…
• Don’t underestimate your power…
• But don’t assume that it’s all your
responsibility…
• Do what you can the best that you can…
• Trust that there is power in words…
• Some people are looking up to you that
you may not even know…
• You’re a ―Who Said‖ to somebody,
somewhere…
It Makes Sense!
Want Something…….?
Do Something……!
