For students entering the School of Business in fall 2012 or later, and for those electing to complete a business minor. What is Sports Marketing? Sports marketing is a business career that involves planning, implementing and controlling marketing activities in all types of sporting venues. To enhance their educational experience, students in the program meet and work with professionals who are involved in the business of sports. Why study Sports Marketing at the Palumbo Donahue School of Business? We designed a sports marketing program that will prepare you to be able to analyze and address today’s trends and implement successful sports business practices. Our program provides you with an intensive survey of marketing techniques and promotional strategies, which cover the marketing mix, new product strategy and services, interactive promotions, event marketing and value-added marketing. As a sports marketing major you will explore strategic marketing concepts and learn sales management, product development and marketing research techniques, while building the skills that will enhance your employment opportunities. Oral presentations and written reports will help you develop the necessary communication skills to succeed in the marketing field, and an emphasis on case studies will deepen your understanding of the role of marketing in organizations as you develop analytical skills and apply fundamental marketing concepts. Career Prospects This major is ideal for students seeking careers in marketing or sales in sports retail marketing, promotion, sport media relations and sport management. Graduates of our program are working in a wide variety of marketing positions in sports. Organizations such as the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), National Hockey League (NHL), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Olympic Governing Board – as well as sporting goods manufacturers, corporate sponsors, sport retailers and the broadcast media – are just a sample of the career paths that are possible for graduates of the sports marketing program Sports Marketing as a Value-Added Second Major The Sports Marketing curriculum compliments a number of other majors in the Palumbo-Donahue School, such as marketing, entrepreneurship and finance.
