Surface salt deposits in coastal areas with a saline atmosphere, climatic conditions such as humidity, rain, and the impact of de-icing salts all contribute to a corrosive environment, the effects of which are worsened if cracks already exist in concrete decks. The use of a protective waterproofing membrane is therefore essential to reduce whole-life costs and down time caused by the maintenance of deteriorating surfaces. The function of BASF’s CONIDECK® systems extends beyond waterproofing protection to the practical considerations of skid resistance, demarcation of parking bays, traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways. Systems that vary the deck surface through the use of colours and light-reflective coatings improve usability, increase aesthetics and create a safe, welcoming atmosphere. The CONIDECK® range of solvent-free, crack-bridging and non crack bridging polyurethane membranes and wear-and-tear resistant car park deck coatings covers both exposed and covered decks. Our tough wear coats provide exceptional durability, while a coloured top coat gives design flexibility. CONIDECK® car park systems are approved by the British Board of Agrément, fulfil the requirements of the German OS-F specification for crack-bridging coating systems designed to take traffic, and hold the French ATEX approval. Top Decks A single system across an entire parking structure is unlikely to be the best solution. The top deck of a car park is the structure’s most vulnerable surface, exposed to the elements as well as to oils, acids, salts and UV radiation. To withstand such severe conditions, heavy-duty, UV-stable, elastomeric waterproofing systems are needed. 6 Our solutions for car park top decks provide exceptional tensile strength and elastomeric capability. Double the thickness of most products, they use a multi-layer build-up system to ensure optimum performance, even in the harshest environments. Spray application speeds up the installation process and gives controlled thickness. CONIDECK® Systems can easily bridge cracks of up to 2.5mm in width and offer a high level of mechanical resistance, while top coats are available in a wide range of colours. Lower Decks Enclosed, intermediate and lower decks are protected from weather conditions to a large degree and although still exposed to aggressive de-icing salts are less susceptible to stress than top decks. A range of CONIDECK® systems for light to medium duty operations take this into account. Ramps, Turning Circles and Heavy Duty Areas Enhanced, built up intermediate deck systems for heavy duty areas such as ramps, turning circles, entrances and exits. These CONIDECK® systems provide the maximum wear resistance and durability for these demanding areas. For further information visit www.basf-cc.co.uk 26058 Carpark Brochure.indd 8 26/03/2013 15:48 Parking decks, turning circles and ramps Where the deck is exposed, located over occupied premises or has widespread cracking, a fully elastomeric system must be applied. The system must be able to accommodate movement and prevent the ingress of water and gases into the structure, and the membrane must be of sufficient thickness, strength and integrity to bridge the cracks. Ground floor, intermediate and external decks may require structural protection and surfacing – even if this is not an issue, they can be transformed into a pleasant environment for users. Where downtime is limited and the structure needs to be returned to use quickly, a fast-track system is essential. CONIDECK® systems can satisfy all of these demands. Concrete repair and protection Existing structures often suffer from contamination due to chlorides, carbonation or impact damage and may require strengthening, repair and protection. BASF offers systems across the board, whether the need is for traditional repair methods (cutting out spalled or contaminated concrete, repairing with specialist mortars and protecting with anticarbonation coatings or corrosion inhibitors) or, in more serious cases, cathodic protection. Movement joints Failed dynamic movement joints can be another area of concern, allowing de-icing salts to attack the concrete – BASF can supply the solution. Bespoke systems Bespoke advertising can be incorporated through our MASTERTOP® systems for successful demarcation and promotion. Whatever the nature of your car park, BASF can help you to make the right system choice, providing a totally integrated approach to the design and installation of waterproofing and protection systems at every stage of the process. Specifying the Right System 26058 Carpark Brochure.indd 9 9 26/03/2013 15:48 Project Reference Network Rail MSCP, Preston, United Kingdom Network Rail’s multi-storey car park (MSCP) at Preston Station was the first in a scheme of 17 new car parks to be built to coincide with the West Coast Mainline station facility upgrade. The existing car park was replaced by a state-of-the-art, architecturally designed car park constructed using environmentally friendly materials. Challenges • Waterproofing deck membrane needed in bespoke colours to match the corporate colours of Virgin Trains • Demarcation for safety, using colours, a prime consideration • Programme involved tight timescales for application • Environmentally friendly system required Solution CONIDECK® was chosen to waterproof the MSCP’s decks thanks to a good track record within the industry and a reputation for product reliability and durability. Its quick application time was also an important factor. Approximately 24,000m2 of CONIDECK® was applied. Two systems were chosen: CONIDECK® 2205 for the top deck (approx. 5000m2) and CONIDECK® 2259 for the interdecks (around 19,000m2). Internal areas to pay machines and lift lobby areas were also coated. Advantages at a glance • Waterproofing protection • Skid resistance • Spray application supports fast-track working • Fast curing and solvent free • Crack bridging • Bespoke colours to meet corporate requirements and demarcation of parking bays, traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways • Resistant to aggressive chemicals: oil, acids spills, carbon dioxide gases and de-icing salts • Approved by the British Board of Agrément • Compliance with Part 2 of the latest European standard for Concrete Repair and Protection EN1504. The structure provided parking on four suspended decks and the ground floor was a main bus station for the town, making the building a key infrastructure hub. Parking was provided for around 750 cars. The structure features in situ reinforced concrete with precast concrete parapet units fixed around its perimeter. The uncoated car park’s roof deck did not have any provision for waterproofing before this refurbishment project. Challenge The full refurbishment of the old MSCP had the core objectives of providing customers with a safer, cleaner and more user-friendly parking experience with enhanced aesthetic appeal and an improved pedestrian management strategy. At the same time, it supported raising the profile of the new Civic and Cultural Quarter through the integration of the old car park. Addressing the structural serviceability of the car park, repairing structural problems and providing ongoing structural protection was part of the MSCP’s long-term maintenance programme. The scheme included altering access into the car park from the busy Trafford Way entrance to a safer position and capacity was to increase along with potential revenues and the efficiency of the car park’s management. Solution The refurbishment involved converting the redundant bus station area on the ground floor into additional parking, allowing the bay count to be increased to around 850 cars with a redesigned entrance/ exit position at ground floor level. A new ramp was built improving circulation around the car park and diverting the main entrance away from the busy roundabout on Trafford Way allowing cars to access the upper levels from the new ground floor parking area. BASF’s deck waterproofing membrane CONIDECK® 2203 was installed to the roof (appox. 5000m2), while CONIDECK® 2260 was applied to the three intermediate decks (around 5000m2 each). Advantages at a glance CONIDECK® provided a seamless coating with an attractive, skid-resistant, and weather-resistant finish that would be easy to clean and maintain. Its resistance to fuels, battery acid, de-icing salts and alkaline cleaners was a further benefit. As CONIDECK®’s manufacturer, BASF also provided a single source of supply for the other construction systems used on the contract. MASTERTOP® cementitious self-levelling underlayment, was used to profile and smooth the car park’s existing rough-textured deck surface and Protectosil® CIT corrosion inhibitor was applied to help prevent corrosion of the concrete’s steel reinforcement.
