URGENT need !!
for Meals on Wheels drivers and substitute drivers.
We have one unmanned route (2 people), & one route that needs a
female partner and then substitute drivers for folks on vacation or
visiting grandchildren, etc.
Our congregation has been suppling a set of drivers to cover the 3 rd
Wednesday of the month for years. We have been delivering meals for
over 45 years.
To volunteer see Bea Cook who is our coordinator for this program.
There is dreaded paperwork involved (background check, etc.)
Vacation Bible School registration is
NOW OPEN!
Invite your friends and neighbors!
Christ UMC and Westside UMC are once
again combining forces for this year’s
VBS! We hope you can join us July 30 –

July 30, 31 & Aug 1

VBS Materials needed….
Many of the VBS crafts and decorations are made out of recycled materials or everyday
items. If you have any of the following laying around your house that you don’t want,
we would love to have them to use at VBS! There will be a box in the Hub to collect
donations. Thanks!

Tasks that need doing around the church
1. People who would scan to usb drive archived records, bulletins, etc. Our copier scans
and is pretty fast. Would be nice to get some of the paper files to recycling this summer.
Thanks Kathryn Moseler for volunteering. Could use another volunteer or two. We
have a lot of old documents to scan. The floor in the attic will be glad to get the weight
off and the flammable storage reduced.
2. One of the arbors in our community garden needs new supports. Could you help with
this? If so please contact Becky Sweeney at growing4joy@gmail.com.
3. Trustees now has a list of minor fixes to complete this summer. There is some minor
painting, a little plumbing, a couple of door knobs/locks that need some tender care.
Also, weeding, bush trimming could happen. If you would like to check out and possibly
do one or more of these, please see Larry Hanson or Doug Knight.
Leave a message—paper/pen; office@cumcpdx.org; 503-646-1598 in the office if you
will do one of these. Thanks!

July Book Club - Spiritual Growth
What could be more
mundane or less religious than shopping? Yet shopping asks us to
choose our values and weigh the good in everyday terms. It also
brings us instantly in contact with the myriad relationships and labor
of people all over the world who have grown, harvested, or crafted
the food, clothes, and other items with which we sustain and adorn
our lives. Michelle Gonzalez, whose work on spirituality has lifted up
the life practices of Latina women, explores the rich material on economic activity and
relationships in the Christian tradition and the larger pertinence of our actions in an era
of globalized economic interconnection. Shopping focuses on the practice of shopping
and its relationship to Christian spirituality and asks: How does Christian justice and
solidarity play a role in the ways in which we value and spend our money? Can
shopping be a Christian act? Can it be sinful?

Clothing collection for Western Farm Workers Association
We gathered 160# in May/Jun. Total this year is 1246#. Let’s see if
we can reach 2 tons of clothes in 2015! What a great way to reuse and
build connection!!! Thanks to all who helped with the sorting & folding of
clothes and most of all donated.
Our next collection date is June 14th. Remember we only want clothing that is wearable (you
would wear it if it fit). We ONLY want clothing.
The Lord’s Cupboard – This month 174# of food went to The Lord’s
Cupboard. Next pick up July 13th or before if the barrel is full. Bring
your in-kind donation or check anytime (or donate online thru our website –
www.cumcpdx.org).
We've served 18 families in The Lord's Cupboard this past Saturday and are
seriously depleted in some of our supplies. Of greatest need right now is
Peanut Butter. We have only 8 left total! We also have no Chicken Noodle
Soup, a great favorite. And the rest of the list of items are in serious
shortage on the shelves.
Peanut Butter
Chicken Noodle Soup
Cold Cereals
Canned Fruit: Pineapple; Mandarins; Pears
Canned Vegetables: Whole Kernel Corn; Spinach; Beets
Ketchup Bath
Soap Bars
As always we appreciate anything you are able to contribute. We are open to serve on our
regular schedule Saturday, July 4, as there is no vacation from those in need. Anything you are
able to do to replenish these supplies or contribute is helping your neighbors in need. And we
thank you all for the prayers, in kind donations, and financial support you provide.
Your donations are making a difference. We see it every time someone comes to shop with us
and is so grateful to get food they need in order to feed their families. We'd love to have you
join our team of enthusiastic volunteers but we are appreciative of all you provide. If you would
like to be in touch with us please feel free to e-mail or call:

Our Budget for Mission and
Ministry for 2015
Last Sunday, June 28,
$5001.55 was dedicated to
the work of the church. Thank
you for this support as we go
about the work of Christ in the
world.
The approved budget plan goal
for 2015 is $484,077.
Our estimated income from rent
and other income streams (such
$80,000
as scrip) is $85,000. That leaves
$399,077 to come from giving or
$60,000
some other source. We currently
$40,000
have pledges of $319,000. That
is a gap of $80,077.
