INTERNSHIP POSITIONS
Available year round for five to twelve weeks. We offer a number of internship
opportunities for qualified college and high school students interested in the fields of
adventure education, mountain guiding, guide service management and outdoor retail
business management. Typical internships involve exposure to the various aspects of
operating an outdoor program and adventure leadership center. In addition to day to day
activities, interns are expected to each develop a focused project which is followed
through from conception to implementation. Our internships are not fluff - they are true
experiential education - you will be making real decisions with real consequences. In
return, you take home many new skills, experiences and insights that will prove beneficial
throughout your career.
Working with a mentor, each intern will develop unique goals and expectations that are mutually beneficial to the intern
and the organization. Interns are expected to work approximately 40 hours per week. Internships are based in Orono,
Maine and Bar Harbor, ME.
Sample internships:
Outdoor Leadership / Climbing instruction - provide instruction in climbing and various outdoor activities, slide shows,
present seminars, apprentice with AMGA certified guides.
Wilderness Medicine – instructor support for WFR, WFA, EMT and guide training courses, co-teach as appropriate,
score written exams and practical scenarios.
Adventure Leadership - participate in the development of a new Maine Center for Adventure Leadership and Education
(program for high school and university students) - marketing, recruiting, politics, field instruction, games and initiatives,
ropes course construction / training, writing, etc.
Challenge Course Facilitation / Construction – participate in the delivery of training programs, school and therapeutic
activities, program marketing, and ropes course design and construction.
Outdoor Retail Sales and Management - participate in all aspects of operation - sales, inventory, display/marketing,
website development, accounting.
E-Commerce – develop and / or maintain outdoor retail e-commerce sites. Image preparation, formatting, site design.
Guide Service Administration – develop and market course materials, prepare itineraries, research new venues,
answer inquires.
Benefits:
This is a cooperative work exchange providing skills and guidance to an aspirant guide or intern in lieu of monetary
compensation. Ocassional stipends may be provided up to $150.00 / week, access to professional courses
(climbing/mountaineering, WMA wilderness medicine, AIARE avalanche science, AMGA guide training, group facilitator
training, etc) at significantly reduced rates. Housing variable depending upon location, pro-purchase access, future

Climbing Instructor / Top Rope Climbing
Site Manager
Seeking a Certified Top Rope Site Manager to work in Acadia National Park and Maine
for the 2005 summer season. Minimum of 3 years climbing experience including a
diversity of areas and a minimum of 60 days outdoor climbing per year. Wilderness First
Responder and CPR certification required. Demonstrated ability in the following:
managing top rope sites safely and efficiently, group teaching and leadership, knowledge
of climbing equipment, natural history, environmental consciousness, judgement and
decision-making, improvised rescue, general outdoor skills. EEOE.
Responsibilities: Instruct top rope rock climbing for individuals and groups. Inspect and
maintain equipment. Assist in company operation, marketing, and sales. Opportunity to

TRIP LEADERS / TRIP SUPPORT STAFF
Acadia Mountain Guides is seeking highly motivated, self starting individuals to lead
coed, week-long climbing and adventure trips in Maine and NH for teens. Trips focus on
group living, wilderness skills, rock climbing, cooperation, independence, and fun. We
expect our leaders to be professional and fun-loving with a keen sense for managing risk,
problem-solving and responding to group and individual needs. Leaders of the RockPro
and White Mountain Program are on duty 24/7.
Support staff are responsible for preparing equipment and food rations, transport,
shuttles, and supervising intra-camp sessions. Leadership / instruction opportunities
available to appropriately skilled applicants.
Summer Camp Program Overview
Time Frame: approximately mid June to mid August (4, 6, and 7 week opportunities)
Our RockPro program is an intense, four week series that teaches a full spectrum of rock climbing skills from basic knots
and climbing technique to advanced lead climbing as campers abilities allow. Throughout the series, campers and leaders
will interact with senior AMG staff when on advanced terrain. The program travels between Maine and NH.
In early summer we offer two adventure camps - one that focuses on hiking, rock climbing and rafting and one that
focuses on sea kayaking, rock climbing and hiking.
The White Mountain program is based at White Mountain School in Bethlehem, NH - home to one of the best climbing
walls in New England. Here campers will stay primarily on campus and take day trips to climbing and hiking areas.
Occasional overnight camping trips will be required. The White Mountain program offers rock climbing, sport climbing,
wilderness skills and wilderness leadership training opportunities to campers.
The Young Explorer's Day Camp takes place mostly between Bangor, ME and Acadia National Park. The day camp
provides opportunities for those ages 9 - 12 to participate in a variety of adventure activities including ropes course, rock
climbing, hiking, caving, canoeing, kayaking, and general exploring.
Ideal qualifications for camp positions
age 21 or older, significant personal skills in rock climbing, backcountry travel / camping and other outdoor pursuits,
experience / expertise teaching rock climbing and outdoor skills, strong interpersonal / leadership skills with teens and
pre-teens and a desire to serve as a positive role model, excellent driving record, excellent physical condition, ME Guide
license or willing to obtain it, WFA or WFR, LifeGuard Training and AMGA Top Rope Site Manager Certification or AMGA
Rock Instructor Course required. The latter are available in house prior to start of season at reduced cost for qualified
candidates. Opportunities to work in climbing school or outdoor retail store may be available before and after camps.
All camp staff participate in training beginning in mid-June. There is no compensation for this training period; however,
room and board are provided. At this intensive session we go over wilderness skills, program rules and regulations,
initiatives and games, climbing site management, LNT expectations, area familiarization, wilderness first aid, and tons
more.

Assistant Operations Manager
Responsibilities:
Leadership / Vision / Mission Development: Work with owner to further develop the corporation. Problem solve as
needed. Responsible for critical decision making particularly in owner’s absence.
Staff supervision: Oversee part-time employees. Delegates a variety of assignments to assistant manager, sales
associates and guides. Develops daily work schedules and feedback processes. Process evaluations, etc. Supervises
guide paperwork. Insures adequate store coverage. Meets weekly with employees. Communicates and follows up on
directives from owner.
Retail Sales: Increasingly develop product knowledge and marketing ideas for products. Develop in-store displays and
merchandising cycles. Develop competitive promotion programs. Seek out contract work for both retail sales and guiding.
Work sales floor as needed. Work 2 – 3 days per week on retail floor during fringe seasons.
Financial: Prepares and checks daily deposits. Maintain accounting and financial records, tax reporting, track payables
and receivables,. Prepares monthly account statement and P&Ls.
Training: provide start up and on-going training to retail employees. Organizes new employee training.

Establishment of useful links to resources that maintain AMGCS site open and benefit our clientele.
Verify effectiveness of website on various computer systems available within past 3-4 years.

requires additional personnel.
Marketing: Work to broaden guiding and retail sales to organizations and groups. Manage the response to and processing
of potential group requests. Further develop climbing markets.
Annual Salary: $20,000 – $24000.00. This is a salaried position with two weeks paid vacation after 12 months of
continuous employment. Health insurance option is a 50/50 split first year then company pays 100% (approximate annual

Seeking an individual who is self-motivated, excited to learn, interested in the day-to-day
administration and management of a climbing school and outdoor retail store.
Collecting data for statistical reporting, updating databases, alumni relations, program newsletter and
announcements, develop and post marketing and enrollment information, maintain inventory of
administrative needs, answer, and route telephone calls as appropriate, assist with enrollment
procedures as requested, update program manuals. Excellent telephone etiquette, verbal and written

Assistant Director of
Climbing Programs
Since 1993 our climbing school has grown from summer rock guiding to
include a full spectrum of winter programs, international trips and a youth
summer camp program. To continue our dedication to our quality and an
education-based approach, we are seeking to bring on another qualified
individual to manage our current system, offer the highest quality
programs, and continue our growth.
The Assistant Director of Climbing Programs is a challenging, highly independent position that offers
the right individual the opportunity to run both the administrative and “in-the-field” portions of Acadia
Mountain Guides Climbing School. Acadia Mountain Guides is looking for a strong, experienced i
guide who also brings detail-oriented administrative skills and a growth-oriented vision. Sales and
client relations will be a primary focus of this position when not in the field. This means the right
applicant will love time with clients and potential clients. The Assistant. Director is in the limelight
every day: forming relationships, maintaining relationships, and converting inquiries into sales.
Based in Maine, the role has multiple purposes:
1. Climbing Sales- First and foremost, this person must be the voice of our climbing program – to
staff, clients, land managers and the community.
2. Outdoor Program Participation - This means this role continues to have heavy presence in
rock, ice, and mountaineering programming. They must be meeting new and existing clients
and building relationships.
3. Mountain Administration - This role will also support the Director in developing and maintaining
marketing and support materials and providing course logistics. Especially important will be the
responsibility for all of building contacts and relationships with potential groups and specialty
clients.
4. Lead Specialty Guiding - They should grow into an ability to run avalanche and Top Rope Site
Manager Courses, international trips and climbing programs in both primary and new
destinations, offering the absolute highest quality experience to our clients.
1) Guiding Sales (30%)
a) Further develop outreach relationships with potential new clients through interactions in special
events, outreach and local courses.
b) Pursue universities, youth groups, schools, camps, etc., for groups programs and participation
in leadership training programs such as AMGA courses and wilderness medicince courses.
c) Maintain relationships with clients.
d) Convert potential clients to sales through phone, email, and in-person interactions.
e) Maintain client-tracking system and manage the retail sales team’s priorities as they relate to
guiding.
2) Mountain Administration (20%)
a) In the stores and local communities, maintain all signage, packets, promotion racks, and other
advertising materials.
b) Design and run staff trainings to better educate all staff to market climbing trips.
c) Maintain all climbing equipment and the system to track it.
d) Assist the Director in organizing trip-specific country logistics.
e) Manage / develop climbing school information exchange with retail sales associates.
f) Work with land managers to maintain appropriate land use permits.
3) Destination Guiding (20%)
a) Offer the highest quality rock climbing trips and international destination programs. With
extensive guiding and climbing experience, this person is also committed to what makes AMG
special.
b) Continue to build guide skills and personal mountaineering experience and reputation
throughout the world.
c) Develop new international guiding venues.
4) Day to Day Guiding and Outdoor Program Participation (30%)
a) Lead beginner through advanced climbing, avalanche and outdoor education programs as
technical skills and certifications allow. As the Assistant. Director, their teaching skills should
represent the pinnacle of AMG instruction.
b) Acquisition and maintenance of all required certification (CPR/WFR/AMGA/AVY, etc).
c) Personal and professional development as a mountaineer, climber, and instructor.
d) Manage client check-in and follow up processing
e) Provide periodic retail sales coverage on a per diem basis.
f) Other duties as assigned.
Guiding skills
The candidate who will be most successful in this position is someone who is well educated in a
variety of subjects, from literature to business, and present themselves as not only professional
mountaineers with significant personal climbing successes, but also as well-rounded individuals able
to connect with clients on multiple levels. Candidates must possess a high level of creative energy,
self-motivation, ability to self- critique, and a strong desire to strive for excellence. Ideal candidate
would possess at least one AMGA certification and be motivated to pursue additional certifications.
Salary: $20,000.00 - $24,000.00 based on experience and education
