Nutrition – EL Civics
Assessment Application: none
Materials: Please prepare:
 Oxford Picture Dictionary, class set,
 Fruit Wordsearch”, class set,
 “Vegetables” crossword, class set, and
 “Listening and Dictation” worksheet, class set.
Objective: Students will name at least 15 fruits and 15 vegetables.
Key Vocabulary: apples, bananas, blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, grapes, lemons, limes,
mangoes, oranges, peaches, pears, pineapple, strawberries, watermelon, asparagus, broccoli,
carrots, cauliflower, celery, corn, eggplant, green pepper, lettuce, onions, peas, potatoes,
radishes, tomatoes, yams
Warm-up: Hold up a picture card of a fruit, a real piece of fruit, or point to a picture of a fruit.
Say the name of the fruit and have students repeat it. Ask, “Do you like apples?” (or whatever
fruit it is). Repeat this with a few of the cards to introduce the subject matter. Ask them to name
some fruit and vegetables. Discuss students’ favorites, regional types, etc.
Introduction: State the Objective: Today you are going to learn the names of some fruits and
vegetables and the sections in a grocery store.
Presentation: Note: There are many more fruits and vegetables listed in the OPD. If you want to
extend the lessons, you can teach all the words.
Another note: Tomatoes are listed as vegetables in this lesson. Although technically they’re a
fruit, you’ll see them as a fruit or a vegetable depending on the dictionary you use. Even Oxford
defines tomatoes as a vegetable in the Picture Dictionary but a fruit in its American Wordpower
Dictionary.
Have students turn to p. 50 - 51 in the Oxford Picture Dictionary. Read the vocabulary words
aloud and have students repeat them.
