Volume 1, Issue 1 November 24, 2010 The Book Fair The book fair was a HUGE success! There was something for everybody to enjoy, whether it be a book or a pen. This year the theme was Heroes. This theme was clearly represented in the posters, the books, and the decorations. It was a fantastic theme for a fantastic book fair. Knightly News OUR LADY OF SORROWS SCHOOL During the book fair there were many contests taking place. There was “Guess How Many?” “One for Books”, and “My Hero” contest. In the “Guess How Many” contest, everyone had to guess how many little green army men were in the jar. This con- test was won by Megan Bromwell, who guessed the exact answer, 356. She received a Barnes & Nobles gift card. In the “One for Books” contest, students wrote their name and grade on a paper book. They all made a donation of one dollar. The class that brought in the most books won an ice cream party. The 2ND grade won the contest. Congratulations! The final contest was the “My Hero” contest. Every student drew a picture of their hero. The older grades wrote why this person was their hero. In the end, the teachers couldn’t decide who was the winner of each class, so, they picked winners at random. One student from each class won a free ice cream during lunch and the entire school won a free dress-down day. In the end, the book fair was amazing and everyone enjoyed it. We can all agree this was one of the best ones yet! In the year 2008, Mrs. Campbell decided to become a teacher because as she said “ teaching is very rewarding”. Before this Mrs. Campbell was a graphic designer and that is why she is now a great computer teacher. Mrs. Campbell became a computer teacher because she also loves working with children and teaching us all about the newest technology. One thing Mrs. Campbell dislikes very much is when she has to sign cards, so now that you know this, try and be on your best behav- ior. She loves Our Lady of Sorrows School very much. Mrs. Campbell loves the students and faculty. She says, “Everyone has been so helpful.” Mrs. Campbell admires a student who has dedication toward work, a positive attitude, and one who is always willing to put their best foot forward. She wants to understand each of our learning styles and incorporate this into her everyday lessons. Mrs. Campbell wants to help us reach our goals in computer class. She would like to have a master’s degree in teaching and continue working here at Our Lady of Sorrows School. That is just a little bit about our new and amazing computer teacher. By: Erin Patten and Zoe Goephert Interview with Miss Rimmer Miss Rimmer became a teacher because when she was a little girl, she told us that teachers influenced her and she wanted to give children a good education. Miss Rimmer’s role model is her mom because her mom was always there for her and pushed her into trying new things. Miss Rimmer likes to work with children because they are always fun to be with and she has been working with kids her whole life. The children say that she is a great science, math, language arts, and religion teacher. She is fun, she is nice and she helps them when they are having trouble. Some of the fun projects that they have been working on are planting different kinds of seeds. They have also been doing things that have to do with the ecosystem. The kids that do not know our new Miss Rimmer say that she seems really nice. Miss Rimmer’s favorite football team is the New York Jets. Her favorite baseball team is the New York Mets. When Miss Rimmer is not teaching she enjoys skiing, going to the beach, and taking a ride on a boat. She also likes going on vacations and her favorite color is purple. By: Morgan Patten & Jessica Leaver N.B.A. What does N. B. A. stand for? It stands for No Bullying Allowed. Bullying has been a huge issue in America. Many people have died and been humiliated because of it. Mrs. Bacsik says this school should have no bullies. She has met with the 58th grade about this situation. BullyPage 4 ing will not and shouldn't be tolerated at Our Lady of Sorrows. Some kids need this idea engraved in their minds. When she met with the students, she gave us an example of bullying. Her example was the tragic event of Tyler Clementi. Tyler was a freshman at Rutgers University. In the end Tyler was so embarrassed that it ended in his fatality. Bullying is a major problem. Now in New Jersey it is against the law for people to bully or harass other people. This problem can be solved and stopped if people were kind to each other. You can reduce by purchasing ink cartridges that have refillable ink. You can reuse by packing your lunch in a lunch box and not a brown paper bag. Buying things that have been used such as cars, movies, or clothes can also be a greatway to reuse products. You can recycle by putting your recyclable bin outside VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 every time the garbage and recycling truck comes by, or you could start a compost pile with yard trimmings and food scraps. And lastly, pick up. What I mean by pick up is that you can pick up litter and throw it in the recycling bin. You can reuse empty cartons to make cornucopias or by taking an empty carton (milk, orange juice, apple juice, apple cider, etc.) and cutting off the top of it, coloring it brown and fill- ing it with fruits, vegetables, anything really. You could also take old newspapers (if you have any) and make a cardboard person; then cut the newspaper into strips and wrap them around the body to make mummies. These are tricks for recycling. Page 5 Fall Recipes Blueberry Cake Serves 12, generously 2 cups plus 1 teaspoon all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon table salt 16 tablespoons unsalted butter (2 sticks), softened 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 3 large eggs 1 cup whole milk 1/2 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen (if frozen, do not defrost first as it tends to muddle in the batter) Topping 1/2 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen (do not defrost) 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon blueberries with remaining one teaspoon flour. Using rubber spatula, gently fold in blueberries. Spread batter into prepared pan. For the topping: Scatter blueberries over top of batter. Cool in pan 20 minutes, then turn out and place on serving platter (topping side up). Serve warm or at room temperature. (Cake can be stored in airtight container at room temperature up to 3 days.) Whisk two cups flour, baking powder, and salt together in medium bowl. With electric mixer, beat butter and sugars on medium-high speed until fluffy, about two minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until just incorporated and scraping down bowl. Reduce speed to medium and beat in one-third of flour mixture until incorporated; beat in half of milk. Beat in half of remaining flour mixture, then remaining milk, and finally remaining flour mixture. Toss Page 6 Peel off paper and roll cake up in the towel, starting with the short end. Cool.
