As we come to the close of our Columbian Year ( on June 30,

2012) , we all have much to be proud of for all that our Council has done and accomplished during these past eleven months.

We have continued and built on the traditions and held events that our Council has become known for , we have continued to support our Parishes locally , the Brooklyn Diocese -at large , our

Community , and another start-up Council through the volunteerism and charitable works of our members and have continued to make financial contributions to various charitable causes to aid and assist our local Parish Churches and Schools, the Brooklyn Diocese, various not-for-profit organizations , and various programs that support our youth , educational assistance , and those with special needs . We should all take a moment to reflect on all of the activities that our Council has been involved in over the past Columbian year and let this motivate us to continue our good works – into the upcoming Columbian year which starts on July 1st. As Grand Knight of our Council and on behalf of all of our Council’s Officers and Directors, I want to take a brief moment to thank all of our brother knights for all of your acts of charity , volunteerism , support and for simply participating in our Council meetings and events and for always responding to our needs and for making our Council a very special brotherhood . We continue to build strong bonds and friendships- and this comes from us working together and helping each other accomplish a task or in running an event. I thank God for what he has given us – an opportunity build strong relationships within our community and allow us to do good for others all while having fun. As I have said before, we have established a small town America – “Mayberry, USA” – right here in Brooklyn , NY- in the heart of the greatest city in the world. How lucky are we? I think we are all very lucky to be part of something so wonderful. I know that this sentiment is shared by many of our brothers. As we near the completion of our 5 th year as a Council and as we celebrate our 5 th Anniversary, we all owe a depth of gratitude and thanks to our Founding Past Grand Knight Carmine Evangelista for setting us on our course and to our recent Past Grand Knight Frank Carone for continuing us on that path and further building on that foundation. Thank you Carmine and Frank and to all of the Council’s Officers and

Directors ( past and present) who have continually supported our Past Grand Knights and all of our

Council’s endeavors.

I ask that we all say a prayer in remembrance of Brother Knight Robert Elias who recently passed away. Please keep Brother Elias and his family in your thoughts and prayers .

I also urge all of our brother knights to join our 2012 Golf Committee to assist our DGK Sal Calise in preparing for our upcoming Annual Golf Outing to be held in

September and to also volunteer to help and assist Brother Mike Trotta with our upcoming Annual Summer BBQ in August , along with Mike Reinhardt who is leading our Council’s effort for a blood drive on the same day of our annual BBQ.

Lastly, we have one final piece of business to tend to before we close out our final month of the Columbian Year- and that is our Council’s annual elections – to vote for our Council’s Officers for the upcoming 2012/13 Columbian Year. To that end, we have formed a Nominating Committee which consists of Brothers

Anthony G. Patrizio, Frank Guido and John Picirrillo . Our Council’s elections will take place at our Council meeting on Wednesday , June 20, 2012 – so please make every effort to attend and vote. In order to vote in the election and/ or to be eligible to be nominated and run for office, each brother must be a member in good standing and have a current 2012 membership card , and be current in having your dues paid. If you have not paid your dues , I would suggest that you contact our Financial Secretary to do so and to obtain your current membership card. I ask that every brother attend this meeting and participate in the election and voting process. Included in this Newsletter- is a Nomination Form- in which you can nominate a member in good standing – to run for an Officer’s position. Any nomination must be sent back to the members of the Nominating Committee and they will then contact the person being nominated to ascertain that the member is interested in running for office and will check that the member is in good standing- and will then proceed to place that person’s name on the ballot. Please also note that the Nominating Committee will initially put forth a slate of names for each Officer’s position- and that slate will represent the initial set of names included on the ballot for each position. We request that any names to be submitted to the Nominating committee be sent in by June 13 th - to allow for sufficient time to have the ballots prepared for our June 20 th election . If you have any questions with this process , please feel free to contact any of the three members of the Nominating

Committee.

Best wishes for a wonderful June and congratulations to all of the children who recently made their First Holy Communion and to all of the students who have recently graduated or will be graduating shortly.

May God Bless us and our families, Fraternally Tom Sorrentino—Grand Knight

Council News:

The Council’s Annual Communion Breakfast was held on Sunday, April 15th., in Caputo Hall, following the Knight’s Monthly Mass at St. Bernard Church. This years Guest of Honor was Mr. Carlo Scissura, Senior Advisor to the Brooklyn Borough President. The breakfast was open to all members and parishioner’s of St.

Bernard, their families & friends and was fully sponsored by our Council. This years turn-out was exceptional and photos of the event can be found on page 3 of this newsletter. Plaques were presented to our two Chaplain’s in recognition of their spiritual leadership. Thank you to all the Brother Knights and their family members who attended the Mass & Breakfast, participated in the Mass and to the Brothers who helped prepare the Hall, serve the food and clean-up afterwards.

Also, thank you to Father Timothy for presiding at the Mass and joining us afterwards at the Breakfast.

There will be an Annual Election of Council Officers for our Council # 14269 on Wednesday, June 20th which is our 2nd meeting of the month. Many of the current officers will be completing their first year term and typically all officers are re-nominated for a second term. However, an individual can be nominated for any position, during any of the election years. Therefore, if you would like to nominate an individual to be an officer in Council # 14269, please complete the nomination form, included in this newsletter on page 7. The nomination form can be returned one of the individuals on the Nominating Committee, which this year includes,

Anthony G. Patrizio ( agp2760a@att.net

); Frank Guido ( fguido1@optonline.net

) & John Piccirillo ( jpiccirillolaw@aol.com) .

Congratulations to Anthony Pennachio & Frank Romano on having achieved the status of 4th Degree Knight in our order. Anthony & Frank have been members in our council since it’s inception and we are honored to have them as Brother Knights. A special thank you to our Financial Secretary, Thomas Sorrentino Sr., for his assistance in coordinating their exemplification with the 4th Degree Administrators and guiding them through the process.

In preparation for the Council’s Annual Golf Outing, the first Golf Committee meeting was held on May 16th. A date for the Golf Outing was selected and it will be held on Monday, September 24., at the Inwood Country Club. This is our council’s largest fundraiser of the year and also one, which requires much advance planning and organization. The golf committee consists of over 30 members, which will be working on eight different sub-committees, which include Finance,

Marketing, Administration, Raffles, Entertainment, Outreach, Sales & Liaison with the Golf Club. Salvatore Calise—DGK, will once again be the Chairman for this years event, with assistance from John McCarthy—Warden, as Co-Chairman.

Our council has recently made or will be making contributions to the following organizations: 1) St. Bernard Church—Proceeds from the Golden Gloves Event; 2)

To the Alive in Hope Foundation, a Scholarship Fund in memory of Msgr. Jamie’s Father, who passed away; 3) St. Athanasius Church; 4) Our Lady of the Snows

Church; 5) Diocese Golf Outing—Sponsored by Msgr. Jamie; 6) Lion’s Club Golf Outing; 7) Holy Smoke Event, which sponsors Catholic School Education; 6)

Annual essay contest awards, benefiting the children of St. Bernard & MQH Church; 7) The Tommy Meo Memorial Scholarship Fund. As you can see our Council is actively supporting events & charities which promote Catholic principles.

We have several events which will be coming up during the summer months, and we will be looking for volunteers to assist during these events. Our council will have a booth at the St. Bernard Summer Festival, where we will be selling C&B books. This will be the official kick-off to the C&B drive and we will need members to staff the booth, during the festival. Our Annual Summer BBQ is being planned and we are trying to coordinate a Blood Drive to be part of this event. In addition, we will be selecting a theme for this years BBQ, possibly some type of service awards to Brother Knights. More information will follow on the BBQ and the volunteers needed. As our Council nears its 5 year anniversary, we are contemplating some sort of celebration, such as a dinner / outside outing, for members & their spouses. A field trip is in the works for council members and their families to attend a Football game at Holy Cross College in September. The installation of

Officers will also be taking place, after the elections, sometime in September. So there are many events in the planning stages, which will require many volunteers.

If you would like to volunteer your time at one of our council events, please don’t hesitate to speak to one of the Officers and/or Chairs of the event and make your intentions known.

St. Bernard Church is in the midst of a Capital Campaign to raise needed funds for necessary repairs. The Dinner Dance has been completed and the Memorial

Walkway is still accepting contributions. You can now make a Church Pew Dedication for one of the 92 Pews that are in our Church. Dedication plaques will be placed on the back of the pew you have selected to memorialize. A diagram of all the Pews is located in the back of the Church and you can make your choice for the Pew you would like to have dedicated. The diagram with the pew numbers “taken and still available” will be updated weekly. A pledge form for the Church Pew

Dedication is located on Page 8 of this newsletter and it can be returned to Deacon Chris or Deacon Frank.

Congratulations to Salvatore Calise—DGK, Michael Trotta—Trustee, John Piccirillo—Director, Brother Frank Seddio, Brother Anthony Guida and Terry Sorrentino

(Wife of FS Tom Sorrentino Sr., and Mother of Mike and Tom Sorrentino), on their recent installment as Officers and Directors of the Bergen Beach Civic Assoc.

Knights of Columbus Council # 14269

‘2012 Annual Communion Breakfast & Knights Family Mass

Our council held its Annual Communion Breakfast on Sunday, April

15th., in conjunction with the Knights monthly family mass. This years

Guest of Honor was Mr. Carlo Scissura, Senior Advisor to the Brooklyn

Borough President. After the 10:00 AM Mass at St. Bernard Church, a hot breakfast was served in Father Caputo Hall. All Brother Knights, Family

Members, Friends and Parishioners were invited.

I would like to share with the members of our Council an e-mail that

Salvatore Calise, DGK, sent to the officers, after the breakfast, “Brothers,

Today I took the leftovers from our Communion Breakfast to the Priests and Sisters at Visitation Church. I told them the food was from the Knights of the St. Bernard Council. Sister Rosanna was so surprised by our gesture she started to cry. What amazed me even more was the selfless act when she immediately knew that there were families in church that were needy and handed out some of the food to those people. In the end she saved a little for herself and her fellow clergy to have a wonderful treat today.

Each and every clerical person came up to me, hugged me and kissed me and repeatedly told me to say THANK YOU to all the Knights of St.

Bernard and may God Bless each and every one of us for our generosity to

Visitation Parish”. If you’ve ever wondered what our council is all about, this act exemplifies all the virtues of what it means to be a Knight in our order.

5

Congratulations to Brother Knights, Frank Romano & Anthony Pennachio who achieved the status of 4th Degree Knight. The 4th

Degree Exemplification was held on Sunday, April 29th., with a Mass and reception being held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. There were approximately 90 candidates slated to take the 4th Degree. The mass was presided over by Bishop Frank Caggiano, who was also honored at the Mass. A special thank you to our Financial Secretary, Thomas Sorrentino Sr., for making the arrangements and contacts with the 4th Degree administrators and also for attending the ceremony with our two candidates.
