The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Chapters 26-28 Matt Cardeiro Anthony Waterhouse Period:C Chapter 26- Basic Events ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Huck, the Dauphin, the Duke, and Jim all stay at the Wilk's house where there openly welcomed Dianna test Hucks knowledge about being from Sheffield, England. Huck searches for the money that is in the Duke and Dauphin's room. Huck is interupted while searching when they enter. The men plan on taking everything in the house and leave in the morning. After the men leave, Huck takes the $6,000 of gold and hides it in his cubby. He then sneaks out late at night. Chapter 26- Characters Joanna: The youngest of the Wilks sisters. She test Huck's knowledge about living in England. Has a clefted lip ( a birth deffect) Huck: Claims he is from England and has holes in his stories that Joanna is testing him on. he is suppose to be from Sheffield, England Duke + Dauphin: lying, greedy, selfish men who only seek wealth. The Dauphin is pretending to be protestant minister. Mary Jane + Susan: Sisters of the Wilk family Chapter 26- Quotations " 'Lay your hand on this book and say it.' I see it warn't nothing but a dictionary, so I laid my hand on it." (Twain 157) Analysis: This quote shows how religously uneducated Huck is. What he thinks is just a dictionary, is a Bible and what hes doing is swaring on it. Many Catholics consider this a huge deal to swear on the Bible so when people do it, its usually an honest answer. Chapter 26- Quotations " 'Because Mary Jane'll be in the morning from this out; and first you know the nigger that does up the rooms will get an order to box these duds up at put 'em away; and do you reckon a nigger can run across money and not borrow some of it?" (Twain 160) Analysis: This shows the stereotype of a slave to steal money and not be honest with it. They were looked at as rats more than humans who will take things. Portrays the racism back then. Chapter 28- Basic Events ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Huck see Mary Jane crying in her room she is devistated by the seperation of her slaves Huck tells Jane that theyll be reunited soon. when Jane asks why Huck has a hard time telling the truth but eventually does. she is intructed to wait at a friends house in order to get her slaves back Huck leaves a note telling the where abouts of the money Huck says he's never seen Mary Jane to this day but he hasnt forgotten about her. Huck tells the two other sisters where Mary Jane has gone, but he makes sure they keep it a secret by tricking them Claiming to be the "real" Wilks uncles, they halt the family possesion bidding/auction Chapter 28- Quotations " Well, i says to myself at last, I'm a-going to chance it; I'll up and tell you the truth this time, though it does seem most like setting down on a kag of powder and touching it off just to see where you'll go to." (Twain 167) Analysis: This displays Huck's lack of trust with people. this may be due to his pap and how he treats him. it also shows that he rarely tells the truth and when he does he doesnt know where it will lead him. Themes 1.) One can not lie forever. Huck has lied very frequently throughout the whole novel and he eventually gets caught for it by Joanna (twice). His lies are sometimes very clever and believable which lets him believe that he can keep doing it. He is never questioned about his lies until now. Questions - What do you think would of happened if the Dauphin and Duke found Huck hiding? What would they have done? What would Huck of done?
