2012 Cargill Grows with Railserve As a leading agricultural company, Cargill’s goal is to nourish people. Cargill tackles complex supply chain challenges by working with its partners and local communities to identify and adopt responsible supply chain practices. When Cargill needed to overcome the challenge of moving massive quantities of agricultural products at its Blair, NE and Memphis, TN plants, they selected Railserve as their in-plant rail switching provider. By “owning” the switching operation and developing innovative solutions to efficiently manage carload volume, Railserve plays a key role in helping the Blair & Memphis sites fulfill Cargill’s mission. Railserve Site Leader Scott Cabell and his team take pride in helping the Blair site manage the switching requirements of multiple plant areas. Due to strong carload volume, Cargill recently chose to have Railserve allocate a LEAF® locomotive to the Blair site. Paul Phillips is the Regional Leader for this area and Dave Mazza maintains Railserve’s locomotive fleet in Blair. Railserve began the switching operation at the Cargill Memphis plant in early 2012 and Site Leader Mike Clifton and his Memphis team are eager to replicate the safe and reliable service we provide at Railserve’s other Cargill sites (Blair, Dayton, Eddyville, and Hammond). Les Lammers is Railserve’s Regional Leader for this area and Jay Holman maintains Railserve’s locomotive fleet for the Memphis site. Railserve’s team at Cargill Blair “Crude by Rail” for US Development As technology has enabled the oil industry to discover and extract oil and gas deposits that were previously unreachable, a significant volume of domestic fossil fuel now needs an efficient way to get to market. US Development has designed a “Crude by Rail” system to efficiently move oil and condensate from major production areas to refining and distribution centers. USD designs, develops, owns, and manages large-scale rail logistic centers and is an industry leader in unit rail facility development for both biofuels and crude oil distribution The Bakken Shale deposit in North Dakota; the Eagle Ford deposit in Texas; and the Niobrara deposit in Colorado/Wyoming have hundreds of wells (in isolated, underdeveloped areas) and the challenge has been how to safely and efficiently move the crude to market. USD addressed this challenge by creating origination sources for crude oil in Gardendale, TX; Carr, CO; and recently, Van Hook and Ross, ND. Nearly 90 Railserve team members provide safe and efficient service at these sites and help to reduce US energy dependency from foreign sources. Most of this crude is delivered to the (Railserve-handled) USD site in St. James, LA, a newly-expanded facility with 28,000 feet of track constructed by Ameritrack Rail. The Bakken oil fields have many characteristics of the Gold Rush of the 1800s. With the tremendous quantity and quality of the crude in Central and Western North Dakota, there is a tendency by some to “strike while the iron is hot” and get people onsite quickly. Railserve adheres to its vision to be “a place to work where people feel good about the company” by using its behaviorbased interviewing process to (slowly, deliberately) recruit team members locally who possess our core safety values. In addition, the brutal weather at USD’s North Dakota sites demands a focused and resilient team (the wind chill during startup in Van Hook often reached -25°!). Railserve Regional Leader Chris Rogers and our team are proud to provide these USD crude sites with safe and reliable service. Railserve Values Its Roots Railserve Turns Over a New LEAF W hile it is exciting to read about Railserve’s many new operations in the US and Canada, it is important to recognize the commitment demonstrated by customers who have recently chosen to renew their agreements with Railserve. We appreciate their support and encouragement of our efforts and look forward to continued safe performance at their sites. In response to rising demand for efficient, economical, and environmentally sound locomotive power, Railserve continues to increase its high standard for performance and value with improvements to the LEAF gen-set locomotives. The Railserve LEAF reduces NOx emissions by 76%, cuts fuel consumption by 45–60%, and decreases oil consumption by 90% while meeting EPA Tier III 2015 emissions standards. These locomotives are manufactured by Railserve at its locomotive shop in Longview, TX and are in service at nearly 30 operations in the US and Canada. The R ailser ve LE A F now incor porate s a modu la r networked control s ystem w it h greater remote and field diagnostic capabilities, simplified installation, reduced cabling, and a more rugged design. SunCoke is the largest independent producer of coke (a key material in steelmaking) in the Americas with an annual production capacity of nearly 6 million tons at its 6 plants worldwide. At full capacity, the Middletown site will have an annual capacity of 550,000 tons. Railserve Site Leader Mike Haigis and his Middletown team play a crucial role in SunCoke’s success by safely handling the inbound unit trains of coal, efficiently unloading them, and constantly communicating with SunCoke. Mike Meister is Railserve’s Regional Leader for this area and Brian McQueary maintains Railserve’s locomotive onsite. Railserve’s Middletown team ® Platinum Anniversary for DuPont Belle Railserve recently celebrated its 20th year of service to the DuPont complex in Belle, WV. Railserve Regional Leader Terry Patrick and his Belle team have delivered outstanding results earning 19 Gold Spike awards, 1 Silver Spike, 8 Special Merit awards and 3 Contractor of the Year awards. We are proud to provide this high level of service to DuPont and look forward to continued safe performance at Belle (in addition to our other DuPont operations in Memphis, TN and Washington, WV). Museum-Quality Service at Husky Energy Railserve has been proud to provide safe and reliable switching for Husky Energy’s Lima, OH refinery since 1997. To celebrate the refinery’s 125 year anniversary, the Allen County Museum in Lima constructed a permanent exhibit, which contains a Railserve locomotive and railcars. Railserve Site Leader Jeremy Kaser and his Lima team share Husky’s core values — a commitment to safety and a work environment that fosters teamwork, accountability, and open communication. Mike Meister is Railserve’s Regional Leader for this area and Brian McQueary maintains Railserve’s locomotive fleet in Lima. A Perfect Dozen at P&G Jackson Railserve Site Leader Calvin Jones and his team recently celebrated 12 years with no first aids, recordable injuries, or human errors for Railserve’s operation at the Pringles plant in Jackson, TN. Railserve attributes its safe performance to its focus on training, individual commitment to safety, and the support and encouragement of Jackson plant personnel. Les Lammers is Railserve’s Regional Leader for this area and Jay Holman maintains Railserve’s locomotive fleet onsite. We look forward to a “baker’s dozen” next year! Safe performance at Suncor Railserve’s operation at Petro-Canada’s Lubricants Centre in Mississauga, Ontario recently celebrated 3 years incident free. A Suncor Energy business, the Mississauga site blends and packages 350 different lubricants, specialty fluids, and greases. Petro-Canada’s mission is “to provide innovative, superior products that customers trust for productivity improvements.” Railserve contributes to this mission by delivering reliable in-plant rail switching which enables those products to get to market. The brutal Ontario winters, operating challenge of a significant uphill grade, and travel across a public crossing (in a thriving Toronto suburb) adds to this achievement for Site Leader Joe Dillon and his team. Railserve Regional Leader Jason Smith provides support for the Mississauga site and Dan Creger keeps Railserve’s motive power properly maintained.
