Cargill is a large and reputable food company with operations around the world. Cargill Beef operates a beef
processing plant in High River, AB, located just 30 minutes outside of Calgary. This plant is a fully integrated beef
processing facility, with harvest, fabrication, rendering and hide operations are all under one roof. The plant employs
approximately 2,000 employees and process 4,500 head of cattle per day. Cargill is federally regulated by the
Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and adheres to the highest integrity and investment into food safety and
quality, animal health and safety, corporate social responsibility and employee safety.
By starting your career as an Animal Protein Procurement Management Associate, you will be exposed to a number
of disciplines that will give you the necessary tools to effectively schedule daily production, maintain a live inventory,
and purchase live inventory from producers.
Job Responsibilities:
You will purchase cattle for the High River, AB plant, through a variety of purchasing options including but not
limited to spot market negotiations, basis contracts, and other alliance style arrangements. You will also be
responsible for maintaining relationships with Grid and formula yards in the area as well as attending cull cow sales
to procure them for the High River facility.
Environment:
The training portion of this role takes place over a 9-12 month time period. The first half will focus on the physical
activity in a food processing environment which generally requires a moderate amount of exertion on a fairly regular
basis – involving bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of
objects weighing over 50 pounds and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. The work may also involve other exertions,
conditions or exposures (i.e. - heat, cold, dust, etc.). The second half of the training will focus on time with the cattle
scheduler, learning to schedule cattle into the plant. Additionally time will be spent with buyers in the field, and
covering for buyers on vacation.
This is a full time, salaried position. Anticipated start date is May 2016.
Location: High River, AB
The majority of recruiting and interviewing will be done during fall 2015.
Required Qualifications:
 Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited program in agriculture, business, economics, or
related degrees
 Graduating between December 2015 and August 2016
 Basic understanding of the futures market and trading
 Demonstrated strong negotiation skills
 A desire and willingness to work around and with livestock producers
 Demonstrated strong conflict resolution skills
 Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
 Ability and willingness to travel, as needed
 A valid Canadian driver’s license and a clean driving record
 Must be legally entitled to work for Cargill in Canada
