INTERCOLLEGIATE SAILING ASSOCIATION The Atlantic Coast Women’s Championship Hosted by MIT Sailing Instructions 1. RULES- This regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing 2013-2016, the ICSA Procedural Rules, and these Sailing Instructions. The organizing authority is the Intercollegiate Sailing Association of North America in conjunction with host MIT. 2. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS- Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located west of the lobby area at the MIT Sailing Pavilion. 3. CHANGES TO THE SAILING INSTRUCTIONS- Any Change to the Sailing Instructions will be posted 10 minutes prior to the boat rotation for the races it will take effect. Any schedule change will be posted by 1600 on the day before it takes effect. 4. SCHEDULE- Eighteen races per Division are scheduled, of which three (3) races per Division shall be required to constitute a series. 5. FORMAT- Racing will be held concurrently on the same course. The regatta format will be a single round robin. A Division shall start racing in Fireflies and shall switch to turbo FJs after Race 8. B Division shall start racing in turbo FJs and shall switch to Fireflies after Race 8. 6. RACING AREA-The racing area will be the Lower Charles River Basin. 7. ROTATION- The rotation of boats will be in accordance with the provided rotation sheet available at on TechScore. Competitors may only pull up boats on the dock during the rotation period with the permission of the race committee. Please ease the gnav or vang between races and do not land at the dock during a set unless specifically given permission by the RC. 8. COURSES and MARKS- The courses are illustrated on the APPENDIX to these Sailing Instructions. Fireflies will always sail an outer trapezoid. Turbo FJs will always sail an inner trapezoid. The second race of each set may be a ‘PLUS’ course with an additional leg added to windward with a finish between two yellow balls. The RC shall hail competitors to indicate a plus course prior to and during the starting sequence. 9. STARTING AND FINISHING LINES; STARTING SYSTEM- Races will be started in accordance with PR 18. The starting line will be between a staff on the Race Committee Signal Boat and the water's edge (course side) of the starting mark. The starting pin will be the farther away pink ball. The finishing line shall be between the two green balls at the base of the outer trap course. On a ‘PLUS’ course, with an additional leg, the finish line shall be between two yellow balls. 10. PROTESTS- Protests shall comply with the ICSA Procedural Rules. Protest forms are available in the lobby area at the MIT changing dock and shall be submitted to the Scorer upstairs. Protests shall be filed within 15 minutes of reaching the shore after a lunch break, postponement, a boat rotation, or the last race of the day. This changes PR 30. Hearings will be held as soon as possible. 11. BOATS - The standing rigging may be adjusted when not racing. This modifies CR 6.5.1 of the Collegiate Dinghy Class Rules. All competitors are strongly encouraged to triple wrap their halyards before completing their cleat hitch. New line is very slippery. Luff tension on both mainsails and jibs may be adjusted while racing. Turbo FJs- A Sta-Master setting of 4.0 yields a rake of 28” from top of transom to apex of clew. Masthead rake is 243”. A Sta-Master setting of 4.5 yields a rake of 27” from top of transom to apex of clew. Masthead rake is 242”. A Sta-Master setting of 5.0 yields a rake of 26” from top of transom to apex of clew. Masthead rake is 241”. Turbo FJ masts are 4” longer than conventional Club FJ masts to raise the height of the boom. Fireflies- A Sta-Master setting of 4.0 yields a masthead rake of 244” with jib halyard just snug. A Sta-Master setting of 4.5 yields a masthead rake of 245” with jib halyard just snug. A Sta-Master setting of 5.0 yields a masthead rake of 246” with jib halyard just snug. 12. PERSONNEL UPDATES- All teams are requested to immediately update their personnel changes when they occur. Access to techscore is available with the score keepers upstairs in the sailing pavilion. Promoting our sport to interested supporters is valuable to all of us. 13. COACHING - ICSA PR 19 will apply, and all Coaches shall remain ashore. 14. ICSA REPRESENTATIVE- the Race Committee shall appoint a Representative who shall assist in ensuring the quality and fairness of the competition. This representative shall act as a liaison between the teams in attendance and the Race Committee Chairman. The rep for this event is: 15. CLEAN-UP- At the conclusion of sailing on both days, please tie down hulls after pulling boats up so that the side stays are adjacent to the bunkers. Please also relieve both plugs in the Fireflies and the plugs and tennis balls in the FJs. For those sailors who end their sailing in MIT FJs, race jibs shall be hung at the conclusion of both days.
