With promotion and consistent recruiting by Ad‐PR Instructor Joan McCain, UCF Ad‐PR majors broke records for MAIP participation. In December 2009, a record 14 students applied. In February nine students were notified that they were semi‐finalists and would be granted an interview to determine if they are a MAIP finalist. This was the second record breaking news. By April, all nine students were offered positions — a UCF sweep. One student did decline the offer because it did not match his career goals. A UCF student was offered the only internship in public relations in the country, and another student secured the highly competitive creative position of copywriter. Three students will spend their summer in New York City; three will be in Chicago, one in Dearborn, Mich., and one in Los Angeles. The students began their internship on June 7, and will all meet in New York City at MAIP headquarters for a graduation ceremony on Aug. 12. "MAIP offers the students an incredibly opportunity," said McCain. "It will truly open doors for their professional futures. But it also enhances the reputation of UCF. These students will stand up at graduation — among other MAIP interns from older universities with larger programs — and say, 'I am from the University of Central Florida.' After hearing it eight times, those advertising professionals in the room will definitely know who we are — and how wonderful our students are." UCF Ad‐PR Students Gaining Exposure in National Firms Thanks to MAIP This summer, eight UCF Ad‐PR majors will have the career opportunity of a lifetime by securing internships with national firms through a highly competitive program called MAIP. The Multi‐cultural Advertising Internship Program (MAIP), recruits and places students of color in national advertising agencies each summer. MAIP interns are flown to each host city, then to New York City for graduation, provided housing and paid $4,000 for the 10‐week internship. Each summer, MAIP places about 130 interns from a pool of nearly 400 applicants. Between 2005 and 2009, 10 UCF students majoring in Advertising‐Public Relations were selected for this competitive national internship program sponsored 1

Katie Detlefsen, a Mass Communication student, has been selected as the recipient of the 2010 Dinah Shore Trophy Award. The award is administered by The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Foundation. The Dinah Shore Trophy Award recognizes a female collegiate golfer who excels in both academics (a minimum 3.2 on a 4.0 scale) and athletics — playing in at least 50 percent of the team's scheduled events — while maintaining a 78.00 or less scoring average. The nominees must also demonstrate outstanding leader‐ ship skills and community service. Detlefsen has balanced an impressive college golf career while maintaining an impeccable community service record and a 4.0 GPA. She graduated from the UCF Ad‐PR undergraduate program in just two years and is currently pursuing a master's degree in mass communications. Detlefsen’s extensive community involvement includes service to the Central Florida Children’s Home, New Life Church of God, Second Harvest Food Bank, and an unpaid internship at the Orlando‐based House for Hope. McCain is already recruiting for next year's pool of MAIP applicants. UCF Lands a Third Dow Jones Internship UCF journalism student Ashley Carnifax has been appointed to a prestigious Dow Jones copy‐editing internship at The Palm Beach Post for this summer. She is one of three UCF journalism students who have been selected by Dow Jones this year. The others are Michelle Dendy and Mike Balducci. Ashley will complete her editing boot camp training in June at Penn State and then will spend 12 weeks at the Post. This is an honor for Ashley and for UCF. Please congratulate her when you see her. Challenge to the Communication Discipline" accepted for publication in the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication. Reporting results of a survey of major communication departments in East Africa, the article describes the plethora of challenges that East African faculty face when they try to gain entry into the global research endeavor. Miller's co‐authored article with Kyalo wa Ngula, "Self‐
Disclosure of HIV Seropositivity in Kenya: Boundary Management by HIV‐Positive Kamba Men and Their Families" has been accepted for publication in a special issue of Southern Communication Journal focused on qualitative research. This paper is an extension of Miller's previous research on how, why, and to whom people living with HIV in Kenya reveal their diagnosis. Another paper, "An Exploration of Rural and Urban Kenyan Women’s Knowledge and Attitudes Regarding Breast Cancer and Breast Cancer Early Detection Measures," co‐authored with Ann Muthoni‐Thuo, has been accepted for publication in Health Care for Women International. Results of the study indicated that rural women especially held wide‐ranging misconceptions about the causes and symptoms of breast cancer, and many had not even heard of mammograms or clinical breast exams. Miller will be conducting additional research on health communication in the East African context with colleagues in Nairobi, Kenya from May 18 to June 9.
