Each year, the state of Missouri sets aside a week in late January as School Board
Recognition Week. The week recognizes the dedicated energies and countless hours
devoted by a group of more than 3,600 men and women who serve on school boards
throughout the state. These public servants are elected by local constituents and do not
receive compensation for their tireless efforts. Honored during the Pattonville recognition were: Robert Dillon, president; Jeanne Schottmueller, vice president; Ron Kuschel, secretary; Ralph
Stahlhut, treasurer; Cindy Candler, director; Tami Hohenstein, director; and Ruth Petrov, director. The board
members also received a proclamation from Gov. Jay Nixon and certificates of appreciation from the Missouri
School Boards Association.
The Pattonville Board of Education was the 2002 winner of the Missouri School Boards Association’s
Outstanding Board of Education Award and was a finalist for the award in 2008 and 2011.

Rachel’s Challenge comes
to Pattonville High School
On Jan. 23, the entire study body of Pattonville
High School took part in a Rachel’s Challenge assembly. Rachel’s Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Scott, the first person killed at Columbine High School in 1999. Rachel left behind a simple
challenge - treat others with kindness and compassion, and you just may change the world you live in.
Students heard her messages of hope and compassion
from presenter Dave Gamache. Then a core group
of 100 students were trained on the principles of the
program and how they can continue to foster them
well after the day of the assembly. Gamache also ventured to Holman Middle School in the afternoon to
present to sixth-graders and other students who were
not present at last year’s Rachel’s Challenge presentation. Both Holman and Pattonville Heights Middle
School have implemented this program. Thanks to the
Bridgeton Police Department for providing funding
for the high school program and to the SPEAK group
at PHS for hosting the event.

wishing to donate ornaments can contact the Parkwood school office.
The entire seventh-grade at Holman Middle School adopted the Rachel Challenge ideals of kindness and compassion by volunteering at the St. Louis Area
Foodbank. Approximately 200 seventh-graders and 10 teachers volunteered
over the course of four different days in January to help sort and package food for area food pantries.
Recruiting high quality teachers
Thanks to the Pattonville human resources department, Pattonville principals and other administrators
for their work at the Jan. 21 recruitment fair. Pattonville hosted the event to interview candidates for teaching positions at all levels. About 200 candidates took part in the event, which served as an initial contact for
candidates for potential positions in the district.

PHS science teacher earns Leader in Education award
R
ob Lamb, a science teacher at Pattonville High School (and a 1998 graduate of Pattonville) was named a
Peabody Logos Leader in Education and awarded $1,000 for his compassion and commitment to students.
As a science teacher, Lamb empowers his students to think and discover for themselves. He prepares them
with the latest skills in technology while fostering a passion for serious science. From detonating gas-filled
pumpkins to igniting and propelling “micro mole rockets,” Lamb’s class experiments are highly interactive
and engaging. He has participated in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) “SciJourn” initiative to promote science literacy through journalism. This effort has translated into published student work in SciJourner,
a publication sponsored by NSF and the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
The Peabody Logos Leaders in Education program rewards dedicated education professionals—from
teachers and coaches to librarians and counselors—who inspire and motivate youth to succeed. Award recipients are selected throughout the school year by a committee of top educators and business leaders. The 20112012 award program is continuing to accept nominations at www.PeabodyEnergyLeadersInEducation.org.

Pattonville to award honorary diplomas to veterans
F
or the 10th year in a row, Pattonville will reserve time during
graduation ceremonies to award honorary high school diplomas
to veterans who left high school before graduation to serve in the
United States military during foreign conflicts. The ceremony will
take place during Pattonville High School commencement ceremonies, slated for 7 p.m., Thursday, May 31 at the Family Arena in St.
Charles.
Since 2002, Pattonville has awarded more than 100 honorary
diplomas to veterans of World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam
War and Operation Desert Storm. Pattonville participates in “Operation Recognition,” a program sponsored by the Missouri Veterans Commission and Missouri Department of
Elementary and Secondary Education. House Bill 441 provides official state high school diplomas to veterans
who served in foreign wars. Local boards of education award the diplomas, which are issued by the state.
The program is open to any resident or former resident of Missouri. Veterans can qualify regardless of
whether they attended public or private schools and regardless of whether the school still exists or not. Family members may apply on behalf of a deceased veteran. Applications to receive a diploma may be obtained
by calling (314) 213-8025 or by downloading the forms at www.psdr3.org/NewsInfo/pdf/VetDipAp2012.pdf.
The deadline to return applications to the Pattonville School District in order to participate in this year’s graduation ceremony is Friday, March 9. Diplomas may also be sent directly to the veteran if the person chooses
not to participate in the graduation ceremonies.
A copy of the veteran’s honorable discharge papers or DD-214 is required to be submitted along with the application. The Missouri Veterans Commission will verify that an applicant is eligible to receive the diploma.
