LITERACY All lessons will reinforce features associated with the various texts / genres studied. Chronological Recounts: Write chronological recounts relating to the Titanic: - From construction to it sinking, - Search and discovery of its wreckage. Stories: Writing suspense stories using OBDE to help structure their work. Diaries: Writing informal and chatty diaries inserting contractions, slang and bold and blocking key words / phrases for effect. Stories from a Different Culture “Journey to Jo’burg”: Explore the story to note how people in South Africa were treated as a result of the colour of their skin. To plan and write their own extra chapter to the story. Persuasive Writing: To use argument connectives to help structure and write persuasive arguments, including points of view for and against the motions explored. Journalistic Reports: Write journalistic reports for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. HISTORY The Titanic: Write about how people of different class might have spent their time on board the ship, highlighting similarities and differences. Sample and describe some of the foods from the Titanic’s menu. Compare positive and negative feelings experiences on the Titanic to times in their lives. Neil Armstrong: First Man on the Moon: Use a series of photos and information to write a factual book about the Apollo 11 mission, culminating in Neil Armstrong walking on the Moon. Nelson Mandela: Look at the key events in Nelson Mandela’s life and how he strove for equality of all people in South Africa regardless of skin colour. Compare their life to a boy who lives in South Africa now to highlight similarities and differences. Royal Wedding of Will & Kate: Design a plate to commemorate the Royal Wedding. Dress up to have a party like those held on this day. SCIENCE The Body: Name and explain the importance of the seven life processes. Locate and identify the major organs of the body and name their functions. Create a poster about the heart: explaining its importance. Label the human skeleton using medical names where possible, Name and identify different types of joints in the skeleton. Create a short fitness routine to exercise the muscles in the body. Complete an investigation exploring the effect of exercise on the pulse rate. Design a healthy living booklet: mentioning the importance of a balanced diet, exercise, looking after the teeth and how bodies can be influenced by alcohol and drugs. Earth, Sun and Moon: Identify true or false facts about the solar system. Use models and diagrams to explain: - how the Erath orbits the Sun and the Moon orbits the Earth, - how day and night are created, - how shadows change size and position during the day. ART I.T. C.D.T. Create a seascape in the style of Turner, using oil pastels. They could link this to the Titanic and draw the ship as it left Southampton or after its collision with the iceberg. To design and create an African art scene using tie-dying and printing techniques. On an outline of Africa, draw images associated with the country, using colours. To design and create a wedding party invitation and a commemorative plate. Create a PowerPoint presentation relating to one of the chosen events: inserting text, images, animation, hyperlinks and sounds. Use Word to create the table for the fact-file comparing the UK and South Africa. Design, make and evaluate a musical instrument inspired by the work linked to South Africa. The children will evaluate a variety of modern instruments and then use ideas to inspire their own design. They will use mod-roc to make their instrument and in small groups they could play their instruments to help with the evaluation process. GEOGRAPHY On a blank world map name the continents and oceans. Create a fact-file comparing UK and South Africa. PE / DANCE Perform a series of exercise to develop muscles, co-ordination and strength: to stimulate astronaut training. Learn one of the popular dances of the time. PSHCE Discuss the past when the class system was common; try to empathise with the various classes. South Africa: each child to wear a coloured sticker and the colours would be treated differently.
