Located in Southern California, The Copy
Department, Inc. has built a solid reputation by
providing affordable, high quality printing
services to the public and wholesale printing
trades for nearly three decades. The company
serves a broad customer base including the legal,
education, medical, graphic communications and
print sectors. The Copy Department is well known
for its depth of experience, exceptional customer
service and its versatility in handling everything
from simple to highly complex printing jobs.
The Challenge
Like many businesses, The Copy Department was
hit hard by the recent recession. Downward
economic pressures put the company in a virtual
tailspin as nearly 30% of its longtime customers
cut back on printing projects with the firm. This
forced company owner, David Shehorn, to reduce
staff and reassess his costs, equipment—and his
future. For many years, Mr. Shehorn used Konica
Minolta® and Canon® color printers/copiers to
handle the bulk of his print orders. Over time, he
found that the Konica Minolta devices were
becoming less reliable, more expensive to
operate and maintain and didn’t sufficiently
allow the company to keep up with the changing
needs of customers and the marketplace. Add
the pressures of the recession and it was evident
that a change needed to be made.
The Solution
Mr. Shehorn began to research new equipment
options, including Xerox. He was intrigued by the
modular design of Xerox® equipment and knew
that this would allow his company to instantly
replace parts and save downtime and expensive
service calls. More importantly, he understood
that leading-edge Xerox® technology offered
customers a wider variety of print capabilities
and services, which was crucial in securing
new business.
After consulting with other colleagues in the
print business and conducting independent
online research, Mr. Shehorn found that the
mid-range Xerox® Color 560/570 Printer was held
in high regard by other printers, especially in the
area of color resolution. Ultimately, he chose the
light production Xerox® Color 560/570 Printer but
not without one final push from the incumbent
equipment provider who offered the company
an attractive rebate to continue using their
equipment. “The money sounded great but over
the long haul, they were trying to sell me a
machine that wasn’t current,” said Mr. Shehorn.
“I had to think of what was best for the business
and our customers rather than what was best
for me.”
Mr. Shehorn is quick to give kudos to his Xerox
representative for helping him make the right
choice. “[She] was very responsive and got back
to me very quickly to help me decide on the right
device and accessories for my business. And
when it was time to install, she was able to get us
connected to the network quickly without a lot of
downtime,” said Mr. Shehorn.

The Results
The light production Xerox® Color 560/570
Printer has given Mr. Shehorn and his team
plenty to smile about. In a short time, he has
seen a 25% increase in productivity and a nearly
50% reduction in color click costs. Plus, in the first
six months of operation, only one service call
was required—even with monthly print volumes
exceeding 30,000 pages.
Business has begun to rebound as well with an
increase of about 10% since the installation of
the printer. He’s also seen firsthand how the light
production Xerox® Color 560/570 Printer has
increased customer satisfaction. With features
such as fast network scanning and the ability to
work with a wide variety of custom paper stocks,
customers can get what they want, when they
want it.
The true “Aha” moment for The Copy
Department? “Shortly after we had the Xerox®
printer installed, a customer walked in and
needed 30 color copies right away,” said
Mr. Shehorn. The machine was off. I turned it on
and within two minutes, I was making his copies.
With the old equipment, it would have taken ten
minutes just to warm up. This was a first-time
customer and he’s been back many times
because of a positive first experience. That says
it all,” he adds.
