IMPACT The Political Voice of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Helping to Preserve Our Future The Newsletter of NCBA-PAC • Spring 2014 • Volume 3, Issue 1 Contributions or gifts to NCBA-PAC are not deductible as charitable donations for federal income tax purposes. Guidelines for Joint Contributions NCBA-PAC may receive up to $5,000 per year from any individual contributor. A husband and a wife each have separate $5,000 limits, even if only one spouse has an income. A couple may make a joint contribution using a single form of payment. Since a joint contribution represents a personal check of each donor, each donor must sign either the check or an accompanying statement. The joint contribution is applied equally to each donor unless an accompanying statement indicates otherwise. Remember — NCBA-PAC can only accept personal checks or credit cards. Leadership Memo Preserving the Future of the Cattle Industry As most of you know, when I was president of your NCBA, I never had an issue with speaking my mind. I never hesitated one time to bring attention to the ridiculousness of some of our elected leaders and out-of-touch government agencies. Silence gets us nowhere. In fact, silence is compliance and is a quiet way of giving your stamp of approval to some of these bonehead decisions taking place in Washington, D.C. Speaking up is good. But you also have to be heard. That’s exactly what NCBA’s Political Action Committee (NCBA -PAC) is about. The PAC ensures we elect people who will actually listen to you. When you speak, they hear you and trust you. Those are the kind of leaders NCBA-PAC works to get elected. We need leaders who choose to listen to you over a card carrying member of PETA, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) or some other anti-agriculture, Birkenstock-wearing, protein-deprived animal-rights extremist. The Humane Society of the United States wants nothing more than to put you out of business. Producing meat is unethical in their book and a HSUS staff member was quoted saying, “My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture.” It has been the mindset of many in this industry that these extremists groups and their 150 million dollar war chest are unbeatable and we cannot compete with their massive resources. I certainly agree that we cannot compete with that kind of money, but we need to wake up and realize we not only can beat these wackos, we have to beat them if we want to keep families ranching in this country. Folks, they can be beat. We proved it. HSUS piled money into Christie Vilsack’s (ironically, the spouse of USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack) campaign to replace Steve King in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District. Congressman King is a strong defender of agriculture and a roadblock for HSUS. King pushed an amendment to the 2012 Farm Bill that would have prevented HSUS’ destruction of California egg producers from spreading across the nation. King never backed down amidst strong pressure from HSUS and more than $500,000 in HSUS-funded attack ads during his campaign. Your NCBA-PAC understood the importance of re-electing Rep. King. So, in defense of the Congressman, we backed him and didn’t hesitate to reveal the truth about HSUS and their support for Christie Vilsack. We won. In fact, 85 percent of the candidates backed by NCBA-PAC in the 2012 elections won their races and took their place in the 103rd Congress. The point here is we can beat anyone out there as long as we refuse to remain silent and take it a step further by investing in NCBA-PAC to ensure people are elected who understand and value what it takes to produce food for this country and abroad. NCBA-PAC Steve Foglesong, Chairman Jim Strickland, Vice Chairman Anna Lee, PAC Director alee@beef.org 202-879-9129 www.beefusa.org/ politicalactioncommittee The sad thing is only 1,600 of NCBA’s nearly 30,000 members have stepped up to donate to the PAC. Only 1,600 people have made the decision to do everything within their power to ensure people like Christie Vilsack and other HSUS loyalists are not elected into office. Let me be clear though, these 1,600 are a mighty bunch who generated enough funds to be the second-largest agricultural PAC in town. They also received tremendous help from likeminded companies such as New Holland Agriculture. Just think what we could do with more people donating to NCBA-PAC. Let’s discuss what we can do with more people investing in next month’s column. I thank you for your membership in NCBA, but the PAC fund is completely separate and we need you to determine what you are willing to invest in electing people who will listen when you speak and take action in favor of the U.S. beef industry. We are asking that you reaffirm your annual commitment to NCBA-PAC and help in the preservation of the cattle industry by donating today. Thank you for your continuing support. We cannot succeed without it. The battle for control of the Senate will be a priority during the 2014 elections. There are 34 senators up for reelection, with 20 Democrats and 14 Republicans. The Republicans need to gain 6 seats to gain the majority in the Senate. Since our last newsletter several seats have changed their ratings. Louisiana has been moved to a pure toss up (Landrieu- Cassidy), Arkansas has been moved to Toss up Tilt Republican (Pryor- Cotton), Montana, South Dakota and West Virginia, have been moved from toss-ups to likely Republican. Other toss-up races that could go either way are North Carolina, Alaska but for now are in the lean Democratic column. The candidacies of Cory Gardner in Colorado, Scott Brown In New Hampshire, and Ed Gillespie in Virginia adds additional problems to the Democrats, these seats, once considered safe, are now in play and the Democrats must spend resources to defend them. Other races to closely watch are the open seats in Michigan and Iowa. In all these state the President’s approval rating is below 45%. NCBA-PAC closely will be monitoring each of these races. Republican seats that may be problematic are Georgia’s open seat depending on who the Republicans nominate and Kentucky where minority leader Mitch McConnell is facing a tight race. *Source: Cook Political Report 2014 Senate Race Profile NCBA-PAC First Quarter 2014 Contributions State District Member Party Amount AL 04 Robert Aderholt R $2,500 FL 16 Thomas Rooney R $2,500 MT Senate Steve Danes R $4,000 MT AL Ryan Zinke R $2,500 NC 02 Renee Ellmers R $2,000 NC 06 David Rouzer R $4,500 NC Senate Thom Tillis R $2,500 NE 03 Adrian Smith R $2,500 NE 02 Lee Terry R $2,500 OH 06 Bill Johnson R $1,000 OK 02 Markwayne Mullin R $5,000 TX 11 Mike Conaway R $1,000 TX 13 Mac Thornberry R $1,000 Total 33,500 Volume 3, Issue 1 Page 5 NCBA-PAC Raises $145,000 During Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Political Action Committee made its presence known during the 2014 Cattle Industry Convention and Trade Show by raising $145,000. This year the silent auction raised more than $13,000. The Jack Daniels fundraiser raised $22,500 during the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show.
