Brown Bag Presentation
A Personal Artifact Speech
Purpose
Everyone has things that mean a lot to them. Some of these things represent our
personality and some represent our interests. Using such artifacts from your own life,
you will present the class with at least three personal artifacts and explain why they
represent your life thus far.
How to Prepare
1) Choose at least three objects from your home that represent you. Avoid things
that are silly and/or obvious (i.e., a slice of pizza because you really like pizza or
an IPod because you listen to it all the time). Instead, find objects that have a
STORY behind them. Some ideas are listed below. No cell phones, please!
2) Be sure that all of your items are school appropriate! In other words, let’s leave
the weapons at home.
3) Plan an opening and a closing statement for your presentation. PLEASE do not
start with, “Here are my objects” and end with, “That’s it.” Be creative!
4) Be prepared to say at least two or three things about EACH object. State why the
item is important and what role it has played in your life. Provide detail.
5) You should practice your speech at home at least one time – you will not be
allowed to use a script in Oral Communications!

Souvenirs from vacations
Trophies/ribbons
Instruments
Poems/lyrics/letters
Family heirlooms
Speech Length
Your presentation should be 1-2 minutes in length. This will be very easy to attain if you
provide detail about each object!
Grading
This assignment is one of the required speeches in this course. You will be given a total
score out of 25 points. Below are the grading criteria:
Opening Statement (creative, engaging, clear)
Objects (meaningful and representative)
Support for each object (vivid detail and explanation)
Closing Statement (creative, relevant, clear)
Outline (complete and thorough)
