Mike’s Mess age Happy New Year to you all. We hope you will enjoy the wide range
of forthcoming events, exhibitions, films, and activities presented in this new format Diary of
Events. The good news is that we remain funded by the Arts Council of Wales, and Anglesey
County Council, but it is still difficult to raise the remaining 60% of income needed. Therefore,
we need your continued support in attending as many events and films as possible, and in
bringing new people to shows, café and concerts. Also, for a modest fee, one can become a
Friend of the Centre and, in helping the Centre, also benefit from reduced ticket prices for
starred events and be able to reserve seats. We have had a couple of shows cancel recently
because of lack of pre-bookings. In fact many of our ticket sales are on the day. It would help
us if you could book in advance. You can always let us know if you cannot make it and, unlike
many theatres, we have a relaxed policy of refunding tickets provided we are told in advance if
something unforeseen occurs.
Finally, thanks for supporting our application for funding for improvements to Ucheldre, in the
hope that we will at last be able, amongst other things, to seat you in luxury.

Marian Bryfdir directs the Bangor Pocket Opera in this devised theatre piece adapted to the
operatic tradition. Set in a 1950s corner shop, the story develops with each customer. An
entertaining evening in prospect with larger than life characters, such as the lovelorn vicar, and
the not-so-merry widow, presented in a style of sly spoof on the grand operatic tradition, and
including some of the most beautiful arias and ensembles by, amongst others, Beethoven,
Mozart, Britten and Gilbert & Sullivan. Sung in a variety of languages, and proving as ever that
music, song and the trials of love need no translation!
An excerpt from Telemann•s opera buffa Pimpinone will be performed as a curtain raiser.

The Brahms, with its gipsy-like improvisation exploding from the middle, requires full-on intensity from
its performers throughout. The Haydn demonstrates why this composer is arguably unsurpassed in the
art of string quartet writing while the Mathias adds a 20th century Welsh sparkle.
Mae'r Brahms, gyda’i ddarn byrfyfyr ffrwydrol tua’r canol, yn galw am angerdd mawr gan ei berfformwyr
drwy gydol y gwaith. Mae darn Haydn wedyn yn dangos pam fod y cyfansoddwr hwn yn ddiguro yn nhyb

athrylith Gymreig o’r 20fed ganrif.

Caruso and the Quake
Performed by Ignacio Jarquin
“...San Francisco is gone. Nothing remains of it but memories…" Jack London, 1906
The Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso was at the height of his fame when he performed Carmen at the San
Francisco Opera House in April 1906. He woke-up the next morning to find his hotel room collapsing on top of him.
Quake tells of Caruso's escape through the earthquake, the fires, and the army gun powdering the city. But can he
shake off the ghosts from his past and the terrible choices he has to make to survive?
Beautiful storytelling and live opera singing by Ignacio Jarquin combine to reveal the heart behind a legend
featuring live music from Puccini, Rossini, Leoncavallo, Tosti and the immortal song that Caruso introduced to the
world, “O Sole mio”

The Dvořák’s last movement is driven by the rich folk musical traditions of Eastern Europe, while the
Samuel uses the strong image of light on water for its inspiration. The Mahler is a rare example of a
