What does it take for a university to claim to be one-of-a-kind? And
mean it? True distinctions like being a Bonner Scholar school. Being
consistently ranked as one of the South’s top regional universities.
Offering one of the nation’s first Digital Arts programs. Having a
State Department consultant teaching political science. Supporting
shoulder-to-shoulder research (for undergraduates!) with a
renowned neuroscientist. Boasting a location within 30 minutes of
Florida’s famed beaches. Yes, it takes a lot. And a lot is exactly
what Stetson offers.

Learning Valued For Its Values. Stetson educates good students to lead great lives. How do we define a great life?
Obviously, career success is one measure. However, it doesn’t carry more weight than being an informed citizen of the
world, making ethical decisions, supporting social justice, treating everyone with dignity, and building community by
reaching out to the community.

Listening, Thinking, Rethinking. The Howard Thurman Lecture Series seeks solutions to
social, religious and ethnic dilemmas. Recent speakers include civil rights historian Raymond
Arsenault on “Freedom Riders and the Struggle for Racial Justice” and poet Julius Thompson
who engaged the crowd with “Slavery, Cultural Caste and the Future of America.”

“When Stetson was named one of
only 27 Bonner Scholar colleges and
universities in the country, it was an easy
decision for me to delay graduate school
for a year and help institute the program.
It is a remarkable validation of a long
tradition of meaningful service at Stetson.
A tradition that has empowered my desire
to work with vulnerable youth.”
Matt Morton
Matt Morton graduated from Stetson in 2006 and attends
Oxford University in England – on a full scholarship – to
pursue a Master’s in Evidence Based Social Intervention.
Ask him to describe The Bonner Scholar Program and
he’ll tell you, “It provides four-year community service
scholarships to students who engage in ongoing service
work during their college careers.”
A Heritage For The Future. Stetson is the first private university in Florida and one of only 270 nationwide to have
a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most esteemed undergraduate honors organization. Our highly
respected liberal arts foundation spotlights the classic skills of written and oral communications, analytical and
critical thinking and problem solving.

Our 165-acre campus is listed on the
National Register of Historic Places.
As proud as we are of that fact, the future
of our campus is the main focus. For
instance, the newly renovated Lynn
Business Center is Florida’s first Green
building certified by the U.S. Green Building
Campus. And, our new 1.5 acre Florida
native plant garden is a great enhancement
to our environmental studies facilities.
Sampson Hall
Sampson Hall (shown here) is a beautiful example of the
stately architecture that will surround you at Stetson.
Under its roof are the art department, art history department,
Duncan Art Gallery, foreign language department, and
the study abroad office. Note the original inscription
above the entry – “Education Is Power.”
True then, true now, true always.
Living The Evening News. Each year, Stetson sponsors the Floyd M. Riddick Model Senate and Model UN. Students
adopt the identity of current senators and ambassadors. During the sessions they hold committee meetings and draft
legislation in an open (and always lively) debate guided by a professional parliamentarian from Washington, D.C.

“My parents let me dream big and
that meant going to a small school.
I didn’t want a generic education.
I wanted a tailored education. I wanted to
develop as a leader. I wanted opportunities.
And I’m sure getting those – as a matter
of fact, I’m leaving tomorrow for a service
trip to South Africa with students from
around the country.”
Jessily Ramirez
Jessily Ramirez is a senior business management
major with realistic plans to complete three minors –
French, political science and business law.
Her interest in organizational management reaches beyond
understanding corporate structure to finding ways for
business to be part of the community and not just take
away from the community.
Real Experience: Predictor Of Doing Real Well. Over half of Stetson students do internships – like the computer
science major who landed a coveted one with Google. Business students personally manage an investment portfolio
of over $3,000,000 through the Roland George Investment Program. Individual students pursue relevant projects – like
the first place winner of Habitat for Humanity International’s Youth Programs video-advocacy contest.

If you’re interested in doing research,
you don’t have to wait for graduate school.
We take giving students the opportunity to
conduct research as an undergraduate so
seriously, there is a Dean’s Fund to financially
support student projects. In addition,
the Summer Undergraduate Research
Experience is a competitive grant for
students who want to pursue projects
with a faculty member.
Subject Matters
Here is a quick grab of presentations from a recent Stetson
Undergraduate Research and Creative Arts Symposium:
Sing-A-Ring: A Custom Ring Tone Creation System for
Mobile Platforms
The Efficacy Of Owner-Applied OraVet,
A Canine Dental Barrier Sealant
The Influence Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) On
Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania
All the numbers on your side. A choice of over 60 majors and minors add up to practically endless possibilities
(i.e. majoring in guitar with a minor in business). A student/faculty ratio of 11:1 and average class size of 20 add up to
undivided attention. The fact 97 percent of professors hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree adds yet another dimension –
true academic rigor.

“Undecided” has always been a popular college major. What do we have to say about that?
Great! Of course, as you would expect from Stetson, we have more than a strong opinion, we have
a solid solution – the Discovery Program. It is designed to put you on the right path with the help of
specially trained academic and career advisors and lets you “test drive” a variety of disciplines.

“Music majors at Stetson constantly
do what we all love best, perform. Or,
to put it another way, prove yourself. You
present one piece in recital each semester.
Then there are the more nerve-wracking
junior and senior recitals. And mixed in
with that are many chances to accompany.
Of course, for me, that meant even more
reasons to play Stetson’s remarkable
Beckerath pipe organ.”
Josiah Armes
Josiah Armes, who majored in Organ Performance,
graduated from Stetson at the age of nineteen (he entered
at fifteen – one of those musical prodigies). His next stop?
Graduate work at Yale University School of Music.
Clearly, the heavy performance load at Stetson
served him well. The Yale program is extremely competitive
because, as Josiah explains, “The Y

a coach who has amassed over 1000 wins. Pretty wow, right?
What’s Happening Is A Great Read. The Reporter, Stetson’s weekly campus newspaper (and the oldest college
newspaper in Florida) – lives up to its name and really “reports” what’s happening on campus. Grab a cup of coffee
and get ready for the latest – campus debates, proposed solutions, upcoming events, sports results and sure-to-starta-conversation opinion pieces.

Deland, FL
DeLand Calls Itself “The Athens of Florida.” Overstatement? Not at all. There are opportunities to visit
museums, listen to a variety of music and plenty of parks to engage your interest, such as the African-American
Museum of Art, the Little Symphony at the Cultural Arts Center and Painters Pond Park, to name a few.

Think You Can Warm Up To This? The average temperature in DeLand in the winter is
about 61 degrees and ranges around 81 degrees in the summer. We are also less than two
hours from St. Augustine, Jacksonville and Tampa. How perfect is that?
Back To The Fantastic. Stetson’s campus is your connection to an older and more natural Florida. We’re especially
lucky to be close to Florida’s most historic river, the St. Johns River; Blue Spring State Park, home of the manatees; the
Ocala National Forest; and perhaps the most undeveloped beach on the Atlantic Coast, the Canaveral National Seashore.
