Genazzano FCJ College Overview
introduction
The Genazzano FCJ College
Council is now seeking an
inspirational Principal to
commence in January 2016.
Genazzano FCJ College is a leading Catholic
independent girls’ day and boarding school, located
on Cotham Road, Kew, Victoria. It was founded
in 1889 by the French order of the Society of the
Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ Society). Marie
Madeleine d’Houët, the foundress of the Society,
established schools to provide ‘a solidly Christian
education’ for young people from all classes of
society. (Memoirs) Her vision was to educate in
respect of the uniqueness of each person, where all
are encouraged to use their gifts for the service of
others and for the transformation of society.
Today, 1140 students from Early Learning through
to Year 12 attend the College, which is permeated by
the richness and traditions of the Catholic faith and
the FCJ heritage, and where intellectual pursuits
flourish in a climate of excellence and enquiry.
The College is structured in Stages of Learning, the
Early Learning Centre, the Early Years from Prep to
Year 4, the Middle Years from Years 5 to 8 and the
Later Years from Years 9 to 12.
Academically, Genazzano is in the top four highest
achieving Catholic schools in Melbourne, with a VCE
median study score of 35. In 2014 there were seven
students who achieved 99+ and above. The girls’ only
environment from Prep to Year 12 allows students to
dare to take intellectual risks and to focus on excellence
in achievement. The girls see strong role models in the
College and Student Leadership team, members of the
Alumnae network and the wider College community.
The teacher student relationship is particularly
strong, and Genazzano girls and their Parents can be
confident that their teachers have the expertise and
the resources to enable them to specifically match their
teaching methodology to the ways girls learn and to
develop courses to meet their needs.
The college opened its co-educational Early Learning
Centre (ELC) in January 2013. This innovative, evidence
based program is based on maximising children's brain
development and inspiring children to learn through
play. It aims to provide a wonderful world of imagination
and creativity for little boys and girls to learn and grow in
a new purpose built facility at Grange Hill.
Genazzano’s beautiful, park-like gardens and
exceptional facilities provide a unique and inspiring
environment for all students. The outstanding
learning programs, quality religious education,
intensive and diverse co-curricular and social justice
programs inspire students to have a passion for life,
a love of learning, the courage and confidence to be
leaders in the community, and to serve and shape
their world.
Year 9 students are located at a new campus at
All Hallows, a recently leased site of the former All
Hallows Parish Primary School in Brenbeal Street
Balwyn. The boarding house, Hopetoun Hall, is located
less than 3km away, near the Camberwell Junction.
Parent Associations, Committees and Alumnae provide
a strong backing to the fabric of life at Genazzano.
These significant partnerships are vital to ensure that
students are supported and given every opportunity
to excel. Genazzano girls are vibrant, conscientious,
caring, and motivated to make a difference.
Genazzano FCJ College was named an Employer
of Choice for Women for 2013-14 by the Workplace
Gender Equality Agency.
Genazzano FCJ College Council is now seeking
an inspirational Principal to commence on or before
January 2016, following 15 years of outstanding
leadership under the current Principal,
Patricia Cowling.

FCJ
HERITAGE
Genazzano FCJ College has its origins in the vision
of Marie Madeleine d'Houët, who founded the Society
of the Faithful Companions of Jesus in Amiens, France
in 1820. Marie Madeleine envisioned an education that
would enable children to grow to their potential and to
live reflective lives.
In the spirit of Marie Madeleine, the 126 year old
College seeks to create a caring atmosphere
where all can find a place to grow and develop.
Companionship is central to the FCJ philosophy
of education, being expressed through faithfulness,
gentleness and respect. The uniqueness of each
person is respected, and all students are invited
to use their gifts for the service of others and for
the transformation of society.
The person of Jesus and the values of the Gospels
are at the very heart of our educational FCJ spirituality
which is animated by reflective discernment as inspired
by St Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits.
This spirituality seeks to prepare students for a life of
leadership and commitment in the wider community
where Genazzano College graduates will be seen as
women of conscience, competence, compassion and
courage. All educational programs and activities at the
College emphasise the formation of the whole person.

College History
The Faithful Companions of Jesus arrived in Australia
in 1882 at the invitation of Archbishop Goold and the
Jesuit Provincial, Fr Joseph Dalton SJ.
A small group of twelve sisters arrived initially in
Richmond to educate the children in the parish.
In 1888, when the demands on the school were
outstripping the available space, the then Provincial,
Mother Mary John Daly fcJ purchased Woodlands,
a 15 acre block of land in Kew to be the site of their
second convent school in Australia. The FCJ Sisters
commissioned the architect William Wardell, to design
the convent. In 1889, while the convent was being
built, a community of 8 sisters and 30 boarders were
accommodated in ‘Range View’ on Mont Victor Road.
The boarders moved to the newly built Genazzano
Convent in April 1891.
Though the FCJ congregation had its origins in
post-revolutionary France, the College was named
after a small Italian town near Rome, which today
sees thousands of pilgrims journey to the shrine
of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
College
Facilities
The College places significant emphasis on the
learning environment. Open spaces create collegial
learning experiences. There are areas for quiet times
and listening, and integrated spaces that facilitate
social relationships and collaboration. The expansive
lawns and mature gardens create an inspirational
ambience and beautiful outside spaces for learning
and recreation.
Genazzano’s historic neo-gothic Wardell Building
stands at the heart of the beautiful Cotham Road
campus. This imposing building houses the main
Administration and the Later Stages of Learning
(Years 10–12), and is surrounded by:
• The gracious late 19th century mansion, Grange Hill,
which is home to the Early Learning Centre and the
Early Years students Prep-4.
• The d’Houët Building (constructed in 2000),
housing the Middle Years (Years 5–8) in a state
of the art modern facility with flexible learning
spaces. This four storey building also houses the
Information Technology Centre, Science, Food
Technology and the main Library and Multi-Media
Resource Centre.
• The Madeleine Centre for Music and the Performing
Arts (constructed in 2011) is a 450 seat auditorium
complete with orchestra pit, classrooms, tuition
rooms, exhibition spaces and catering facilities.
Boarding
Genazzano remains Victoria’s only Catholic girls’
boarding school. Hopetoun Hall, Camberwell is home
for the 40 boarders, a welcoming home away from
home for students from Years 8-12. Hopetoun Hall,
consists of a period house and a modern, purpose-built
residence for the Years 11 and 12 students. The house
is air-conditioned, centrally heated and monitored by
24-hour security, and is located 3 km from the College.
The House is staffed by experienced and qualified
boarding supervisors, including a resident Director
of Boarding.
Boarders come from Australia and overseas,
with the majority coming from regional Victoria
and NSW and some remote parts of Australia.
The College places significant
emphasis on the learning
environment. Open spaces create
collegial learning experiences.
There are areas for quiet times
and listening, and integrated
spaces that facilitate social
relationships and collaboration.
• Sporting facilities include dedicated and
multipurpose tennis courts complemented
by spacious ovals in a park-like setting.
• Centenary Hall (constructed in 1988) houses the
Basketball Stadium and heated indoor swimming pool.
The Year 9 students are based at All Hallows campus
in Balwyn where they enjoy an innovative curriculum
and a specially designed educational program.

Genazzano
FCJ College Today
The particular emphasis on faith and mission at
Genazzano flows from a strong sense of Catholic
identity and the FCJ charism.
The insignia on the College crest, ‘fidelis’, means
‘faithful’: faithful to God, to ourselves and to others.
It is the cornerstone of Genazzano life. Further
embedded into this motto are three core values:
a passion for life, a love of learning and the courage
and confidence to serve others.
The College is committed to supporting the important
work of the FCJ sisters in Australia and Asia as well
as Catholic organisations such as Catholic Care,
Aboriginal Catholic Ministry and St Vincent de Paul.
Religious education is taught from ELC to Year 12,
with a dedicated curriculum leader at each stage
of learning.
Prayer and liturgy are integral components of Genazzano
life providing all students with the opportunity to reflect
on and develop their spirituality.
Social justice programs are designed to create
awareness and understanding of the broader community
issues. A major goal of the education program is to
provide the opportunities where students engage
and participate in order to make a difference. From
environmental sustainability to International Women’s
Day, students are expanding their knowledge of
important social issues.
The College shares a long-running exchange for Year
9 students with St Mary’s, Broome. Year 10 students
have been involved with a program in Timor-Leste. Staff
and students contribute substantially to FCJ ministries
and relief projects in Asia and Romania.

LEARNING
& TEACHING
A distinctive feature of a Genazzano education is
that the College is structured into Stages of Learning,
rather than the traditional primary and secondary
model. At each stage of learning, students participate
in programs that are age and stage appropriate:
Early Years – (ELC to Year 4) Laying the Foundations;
Middle Years (Years 5 to 8) Building Breadth and Depth;
Later Years (Years 10 to 12) Developing Pathways.
Students are encouraged to
dream large, be confident in
all that they do, and allow
their passion for learning to
grow at every opportunity.
The Early Learning Centre, the co-educational
Kindergarten for 3 & 4 year olds, is a place of wonder
where children can be observed deeply engaged in
learning. The Year 9 program Making Connections–
Journeying Beyond the Gates for Learning is designed
to engage students in a diverse and challenging range
of learning experiences.
Co-Curricular Activities
Genazzano is a non-selective entry college.
The learning and teaching programs are designed
to give all students the opportunity to develop
and excel. Students are encouraged to dream large,
be confident in all that they do, and allow their
passion for learning to grow at every opportunity.
The teaching staff are highly qualified and dedicated
professionals with solid expertise in specialist
areas. Embedded within the curriculum at each level
is scope for teachers to personalise programs to
provide for the different learning needs of students.
Classroom teachers are supported by a dedicated
Learning Enhancement Team and highly qualified
psychologists.
Genazzano’s positive education program incorporates
a Performance Psychology approach. Performance
Psychology techniques have long been utilised in the
fields of sports, business and entertainment to assist
individuals to optimise achievement. The skills aim
to develop a positive mindset to enhance motivation,
performance technique, confidence and self-esteem.
Importantly, the skills also focus on a reduction of
anxiety and mental obstacles that so often undermine
performances. Such skills are fundamental to all
aspects of education including examinations,
learning, public speaking, sports, music, drama
and team challenges.
Co-curricular opportunities abound at Genazzano,
comprising more than 100 activities each Term.
The activities cater for diverse abilities and are
designed to introduce students to what often
become life-long interests.
From Year 5, students are welcomed into
the co-curricular program, and the opportunities
encompass music, sport and a wide range
of interest-based activities including public
speaking, debating, writing, liturgy, social
justice programs, academic clubs, Tournament
of Minds, and science and maths clubs.
The College has a rich musical and choral tradition.
With more than 30 music ensembles, students can
discover the joy of music by learning an instrument
of their choice.
The Genazzano Community
Parent associations and committees provide a strong
backing to the fabric of life at Genazzano. Parents
and friends of the College have many channels through
which they can be involved. The Principal meets once
a Term with the Executive Coordinating Committee
comprised of Presidents of a number of Committees
and Associations.
Formal Committees and Associations are as follows:
• Genazzano Mothers Association
• Genazzano Fathers Association
• Friends of Sport Committee
• Friends of Hopetoun Hall Boarding
• Friends of the Arts
Regular national and international tours offer students
a broad range of immersive opportunities – language
and cultural experiences and international creative arts,
music and sporting tours.
• Past Parents Association
The academic results of the Year 12 cohort have been
excellent. Details with regard to the Year 12, 2014
cohort can be found on the College website.
• OLGC-Genazzano Tennis Club Inc.
8 G E NA ZZANO FCJ CO LL E GE
• Genazzano Alumnae Association Inc.
• Genazzano Rowing
• GenAquatic Club Inc.
These groups offer wonderful support to the College,
but also provide parents with a ready-made network that
comprises friends, professional connections and shared
parental experiences.
Genazzano Alumnae
For more than 100 years, the Alumnae Association
has brought Genazzano women together. They celebrate
their connection and continue to support the College
community through various fundraising activities.
The Genazzano Alumnae Association is one of the
oldest and strongest associations in Australia with
over 10,000 members.
A collaborative and positive working relationship is
established with other principals, Church and Catholic
Education authorities within the Archdiocesan and
Victorian communities. The Principal also engages with
tertiary institutions, leaders in the Independent and
Government education sectors, the business community
and members of the broader educational context in
Australia and overseas.
Wider College Community
The Principal develops supportive, positive and
professional relationships with students, parents and
guardians and is available to and engages with them
in ways that reflect the overall duties and scope of the
role. A special, respectful relationship is established
with members of the FCJ community who continue
to reside on the College site and with other members
of the FCJ Congregation.
The Principal is also part of a wider network of
FCJ educational institutions. In Australia, FCJ College,
Benalla and John Paul College, Frankston, share the
FCJ history and collaborate at various times to foster
FCJ links both nationally and internationally.
