December 20, 2013 פרשת השבוע שמות Candle Lighting 4:12 The New פרעה After all of the children of Yaakov died, the story of our enslavement and redemption begins. In Sefer Shemot perek aleph pasuk chet it says . ויקם מלך חדש על מצרים אשר לא ידע את יוסף-translated it reads, “a new king arose over Egypt who didn’t know Yosef.” This pasuk intrigues me and leads me to question was there actually a new king who didn’t know Yosef? Rashi offers two answers to my query. Rashi’s first answer is that there was actually a new king of Egypt who knew nothing about Yosef and what he did for Egypt. The second opinion understands the words to say that there was not a new king. The opinion is that the king just started to make some new decrees. The כלי יקרoffers another solution to my question about the pasuk. He says that there was a rebellion in Egypt. The rebellion led to the old king being overthrown and a new king assuming control. This new king knew nothing about Yosef and what he accomplished for Egypt. Whether you agree with one of Rashi’s opinions or the כלי יקרit does not matter. Beneath all the answers there is a vital lesson which we can learn from this. Bnei Yisrael were happy, comfortable, and satisfied in Egypt. We can see that from the fact that even when the famine was over, they didn’t return to Israel. The Jews were happy in galut and were not yearning for the land of Israel. Things can always change for Jews. We were in Spain since the 8th century but were kicked out in in the year 1492. We should learn from this that we should always want to be in Israel and prefer Israel to Galut. When given the chance, we should go to Israel as soon as we can.
