Greetings to everyone. As we get
ready for the holiday season we
should remember that most groups
have a holiday this season. So it is
with pleasure that I wish every one
of you a happy Christmas or
Chanukah. So as to include those
with differing holidays I also wish
you to acknowledge Ashura for our
Sunni friends and Bodhi Day for
Buddhists. A wish for a quiet Yalda
for Zoroastrians and also Kwanzaa
for those of pan-African
descent. To each and
every one a joyful and
prosperous coming
year
On a different note, we
are using more staff in the kitchen as
our volunteer staffing seems to have
tapered off. This has led to increased
cost and the Board has been
approached for approval to increase
prices.
We are all aware that prices of food
and utilities are increasing and while
we have attempted to “hold the line”
on costs to our users, we cannot
afford to operate at a loss. Your
Board and I will be looking at options
in the near future and will attempt to
find a fair and equitable solution.
As always I value your
opinions and thoughts;
do feel free to let me
know if you have any
suggestions

The GALA is tomorrow and things are
getting very exciting around here! The Accidental Drama Club has been working so hard
on this production; I cannot wait to see what
they have in store for us. The new lights have
been installed in the gym and stage and will
certainly make a difference in the production
quality. Thanks to everyone for making this
another successful event.
The Remembrance Day Celebration
here at SEESA was very well attended by
SEESA members, families and neighbours.
Thanks to Mary Anne for the excellent job she
does on this event,; thanks also to the Melody
Singers who do such an excellent job.
The Rummage Sale - well wasn't that
fun! Wow a record-breaking sales event.
While we do focus on the $$ that this event
brings in - there are many other benefits of
our Rummage Sale. 1. We encourage people to clean up their homes and declutter. 2.
the good physical benefits of hauling all of
that stuff to SEESA 3. Socialization - it really
is the social event of the season 4. The much
needed funds for our operations here at
SEESA. Thanks to everyone for doing an
awesome job. Oh and by the way - we still
have a wedding dress for sale on Kijiji if you
are thinking of tying the knot anytime soon!

SeaSon’S GreetinGS! Merry
Christmas!
With winter weather well on
the way, please remember
to dress for the cold.
Wearing layers helps with
managing the weather
changes throughout the day
– more layers when you are
cold, remove one or more
layer when you are hot! Hats, mitts, scarves
and warm shoes or boots are also important
when the temperature drops.
Are you afraid of falling on
the ice? There are many
types of ice picks for shoes
or boots that slip on. They
are not safe to wear on linoleum. The grip on the floor is
poor and they could ruin the
surface. Please take them
off when you are indoors.
Social Circle is continuing with a regular
group of people. We welcome newcomers!
We have been having a variety of speakers on
topics such as It’s Not Right: Neighbours,
Friends and Family against elder abuse and
the Neighbourhood Empowerment Team
(NET). Future topics include the Edmonton
Public Library and Bylaw Enforcement. We
also have meetings where we socialize and
discuss current events.
Home Visits: are available when needed.
Shop Talk: Men’s Health talk was well
attended and had great feedback. The other
sessions of Shop Talk have had zero
attendance since it restarted. Men – please
consider attending. The new facilitator is
energetic, enthusiastic, and excited about
facilitating a men’s group.

Their story:
June and Mike have lived a comfortable life
in their home for 39 years.
In August of 2013 their daughter, Janis, was
diagnosed with cancer. She had to leave her
job as a chiropractor to complete her cancer
treatment. June and Mike did not have any
savings, so they took on extra credit card debt
to help Janis through her cancer treatment,
while they continued to keep up the payments
on their mortgage. Through helping Janis and
keeping up their own financial obligations they
accumulated over $140,000 in debt and were
having trouble keeping up the payments.
They went to their bank. The bank could not
help because they had late payments to
creditors and their credit score was too low.
A realtor they knew suggested they contact a
mortgage broker called Sharon. After hearing
the their situation, Sharon discussed the
CHIP Reverse Mortgage with them. With the
CHIP Reverse Mortgage they were able to
access the equity they qualified for in their
home tax free and pay off all their debts, stay
in their own home have money left in the
bank.

Lotteries, Sweepstakes and
Contests
Many Canadians are lured by
the excitement of a surprise
win and find themselves sending huge amounts of money to
claim fake prizes.
What to Look For
You cannot win money or a
prize in a lottery unless you have entered it
yourself, or someone else has entered it on
your behalf. You cannot be chosen as a
random winner if you don't have an entry.
Many lottery scams try to trick you into providing your banking and personal details to claim
your prize. You should not have to pay any fee
or tax to claim a legitimate prize.
Don't be fooled by claims that the offer is legal
or has government approval—many scammers
will tell you this. Instead of receiving a grand
prize or fortune, you will lose every cent that
you send to a scammer. And if you have
provided other personal details, your identity
could be misused too.
A fake prize scam will tell you that you have
won a prize or a contest. You may receive a
phone call, an email, a text message or see a
pop-up screen on your computer. There are
often costs involved with claiming your prize,
and even if you do receive a prize, it may not
be what was promised to you.
The scammers make their money by making
you pay fees or taxes, call their premium rate
phone numbers or send premium text
messages to claim your prize. These premium
rate calls can be very expensive, and the
scammers will try to keep you on the line for a
long time or ask you to call a different premium
rate number.

If you see a 617 Area code...
SEESA
Automated
Message
With the MySeniorCenter system we
have a wonderful tool at our disposal to
cut down the time needed to contact
members when an activity is cancelled. It
is an automated message system we
have affectionately named “Sam”. We
can program it to send detailed messages
to our members by telephone. The
message is an automated voice and
each message will begin with “This is
Sam—the SEESA Automated Message
System” Since MySeniorCenter is based
in Boston the number on call display
comes up as a 1-617 area code, not our
regular SEESA phone number. Do not be
alarmed when you see it. The message
will always repeat and we will record our
phone number at the conclusion of the
message.
The feature is part of the
MySeniorCenter system. Your part is to
remember to swipe your fob each and
every time you attend a club, class,
monthly dinner or event. It is so easy to
contact the members who had “fobbed”
in for classes, but we have to personally
call many, many members who don’t use
the system and that takes up time.
Another reminder: SEESA does not
cancel any program. It is up to the
instructor or Activity Liaison to cancel a
class due to illness or weather. ‘Tis the
season for both so you may get a call
from Sam.

Thank you to all that attended our 10th annual Remembrance Day Celebration.
We welcomed 200 members and guests and 77 Sparks, Brownies and Guides.
Weren’t they the best? The sound of their shoes marching along is magical.
Everyone who marches should have flashing shoes, amazing to watch! Thanks
to Elaun for coordinating the Helen Burns District Girl Guides. Oh, and we really
like the wreath of Brownie hands.
The Melody Singers just keep getting better, just when we thought it wasn’t possible. They sang ‘O Canada’ and 5 other pieces. Such gifted people. We are so
proud to have a choir of this calibre to call our own. Be sure and see them at
the Christmas dinners.
Thanks to SEESA Creative Writers Johanna Wishart, Lois Gangl, and Majorie
Zelent for sharing wartime stories with us. I am so grateful to people who
document their experiences for future generations. The service did our Veterans
proud starting with Ken Saik’s reading of In Flanders Fields. Our own Reverend
Vern Wishart gave us the Act of Remembrance and
prayer. Guests to our centre, Catherine Nicol, Piper, and Willow Dew, Horn Player are the icing on the cake for a traditional tribute. Very inspiring and much
appreciated.
Thanks Lois Gangl and Anne Marshall for keeping me on schedule and lining
up all the acts. I don’t think I could do it without you. Many volunteers including some people from Young Life who helped with set up.
On a personal note; on Tuesday I attended the No Stone Left Alone at
Northern Lights Cemetery where my father rests in the Field of Honour. One of
their main objectives is to educate and engage the next generation in remembrance. School children go to the cemetery with the plan of laying a poppy on
every military grave. I was moved to tears. I feel it is a genius project and
would encourage you all to attend next year. Thanks to the SEESA members
who go earlier in the month and sort the many poppies which the students use
to lay at the headstones. The No Stone Left Alone society, supported by Waterloo Ford donated to our silent auction as a result. We have developed a
mutually valuable relationship. A million thanks to our military who serve and
protect so that we can live the good life here in Canada.
Let’s never take it for granted.
Peace on Earth. Goodwill to People.
