District 24-A Lion Reporter 2009-2010 February 2010 District Governor Tony Reyes 2009 2010 DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE Move to Grow – Grow to Lead – Lead to Succeed Fellow Lions, I recently received a message from Global Membership Team (GMT) Sector Leader Steve Sherer regarding our current status as a subdistrict and as a multiple district. This message was followed up with an additional message from Past International President and GMT Leader, Constitutional Area One, Lion Jim Ervin, emphasizing that we should all recommit ourselves to making membership a priority for the remainder of the year. Extension Workshop On Sunday, January 24th, Past International Director Bill Moody (District 9-A, Ontario, Canada) conducted an extension workshop for us at the Manassas Park Elementary School. LOCAL STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR COMPETING IN LIONS INTERNATIONAL PEACE POSTER CONTEST Stafford Aquia Evening Lions congratulated several sixth through eighth grade students from Stafford Middle School for their participation in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International sponsors this important program in an effort to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. The Aquia Evening Lions will display all the local entries at the District 24A Lions Winter Conference to be held at the Hospitality House in Fredericksburg in February. This year Stafford Aquia Evening Lions awarded three prizes. The first place winner Corinne Jacobsen along with David Guckian and Elizabeth Fauth, received their prizes on January 22 at a ceremony in the school library. The posters were judged by FOCUS art teacher Julia Barth and art teacher Jennifer Felts on originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the contest theme, “The Power of Peace.” Club President Jane Stoll said she was impressed by the creativity of the students at Stafford Middle School. “These posters are a reflection of the thought and caring that each young artist put into the project and of the encouragement they’ve received from their teachers.” Stafford Aquia Evening Lions Club has 41 members and meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. for dinner at the Aquia Harbour Clubhouse Restaurant, located at 204 Bow Cove in Stafford, VA. District 24-A Lion Reporter Page 9 February 2010 Extension Workshop Now I have another big favor to ask. I think our friend Syed would be tickled pink to hear from you personally. I don't have his home number, but the bank branch number is 703-266-0608 they are on the same time as Ontario time. I know it would be a life changing phone call. He now has the means to "We were out canvassing one day and this is what hap- "payback", I'd just like to cement it." pened. It is a story from which magic arises. Another Lion and I were in Citibank. We spoke with the Assistant Manager Syed Hussain. Following is the text of a message sent to Past International President Judge Brian Stevenson. You may recall that Judge Stevenson was our honored speaker at last year's state convention. PID Bill Moody wrote to him to pass on this poignant story about an event that changed lives forever. Before we could give him the Lions pitch he pointed at my Lions Pin and said, "I know that pin and I have a story about that pin, have you time to hear me out?" I said sure lets hear your story. This is what he told us. His baby boy was 2 years old and one day began to turn blue. They took him to the Dr. who said he needed open heart surgery that was only available in the UK or USA. While he was fretting about how they could possibly afford to get the help the child needed, he picked up a paper and it said the President of Lions was visiting Karachi. Syed sat down and penned a letter to that President, Judge Brian Stevenson from Canada. Hoping beyond hope that the Lions could do something. You know the rest of the story, because You made a miracle happen. They went to America, the surgery was performed, it was successful, the baby is now a grown up 23-year-old man who is in school to becoming a cardiologist. According to his father, that child feels he owes his life to Lions, as does Syed. Syed said it is now payback time and he will definitely consider coming out and joining the Lions Club we are forming in Centreville, VA. He also thinks he might be able to swing a family membership and all five of them may join, but he has to have a family meeting first. Brian, you certainly touched a life, and in so doing, Syed asked how you were. I assured him you were well and still very active and that I would be getting in touch with you to pass on his regards. Within a matter of two weeks, Ward had lost her eyesight. "I kept experiencing severe discomfort, and my vision was worsening to the point where I needed assistance getting downstairs," Ward said. "I thought my whole world was crashing down." When an ophthalmologist examined the back of her eye, Ward was diagnosed with optic neuritis -- a painful inflammation of the optic nerve that can cause temporary partial or complete loss of vision. Neuritis can be a result of a viral or bacterial infection, autoimmune disorder or an inflammation of the blood vessels that nourish the optic nerve. However, one of the main causes is multiple sclerosis, said Douglas Lazzaro, M.D., chairman of ophthalmology at the Long Island College Hospital and the State University of New York -- Downstate Medical Center. "This condition predominantly affects 20- to 40-year-old women," he explained. "In the back of your mind you have to think about MS since it can initially present itself with optic neuritis." After her diagnosis, Ward was admitted for the hospital for five days where she received an MRI and had 40 capsules of blood drawn to test for diseases and infections that may have caused the neuritis, including tuberculosis and diabetes. "Nothing came up. I also had a spinal tap to determine if there was spinal fluid on my brain. I started wondering, 'how many more tests do you all need to take?'" she said. Still blind, but after being administered steroids through an IV to help accelerate her vision restoration, Ward was released from the hospital. "I was told it might take six months to one year to get my vision back," she said. However, after returning home, Ward began to see bright red and orange hues. Within five days her vision was almost completely restored, and she regained full vision two weeks after being released. "I felt like a little kid again," she said. Excited to see herself in the mirror again, dress herself and see her family, she recalls, "I was so overjoyed. I really enjoyed seeing the color red! If it wasn't for my faith, family and friends, I wouldn't have been as calm." While most of Ward's symptoms, including diminished vision and an inability to discern color, are common, her case was an anomaly because the inflammation impacted both eyes. Typically, optic neuritis only affects one. Although Ward is not currently on medication and has since resumed normal activities, she may be one of the patients for whom optic neuritis never returns. Dr. Lazarro indicates that optic neuritis can re-occur for some patients but not for others. "There are some patients that get it once and may never develop it again. It can also be recurring for other patients, and there is nothing you can do to prevent it." This new program will enhance the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Program, enabling our association to collect increased quantities of usable glasses for humanitarian missions to developing nations. • Commencing January-February 2010, co-branded collection boxes, bearing the LCI, Walmart and Sam's Club logos, will be available in the 2,500 US Walmart stores and approximately 500 Sam's Clubs with vision centers. These new boxes will replace Lions collection boxes currently in place at the specified stores. For Walmart stores and Sam's Clubs without instore vision centers, existing Lions collections will continue at the discretion of the store managers. • Walmart will ship the collected eyeglasses to their distribution centers, where they will then be delivered to the nearest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers for sorting, cleaning and processing. • Usable glasses will be available for Lions and other optical missions to developing nations, where the glasses will be dispensed to children and adults free of charge. • The Lions/Walmart co-branded program is aimed at members of the public. Walmart and Sam's Club stores will not be able to accept or ship Lions club collections of eyeglasses from other locations in the community. If you are involved in eyeglass collection, thank you for your continued support of this project. We encourage clubs to maintain their collection sites throughout the community and send the glasses to the nearest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center. These collections have had a direct impact on the strength and success of the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Program. LCI can help to promote your community collections by posting drop-off locations on the association's Web site at the Club Locator. Clubs can simply provide us with their information via the Lions Recycle For Sight Club Participation Form and we'll post up to six collection sites. Or, send an e-mail to: eyeglasses@lionsclubs.org.
