Extinct – when no more of a species exists
Herder – a person who cares for groups, or herds, of
livestock
Livestock – animals raised and kept for food
Pride – a group of lions
A lioness is a female lion. She is the main hunter in a lion
family. Lions are top predators. No other animal hunts
them. They prey on livestock like cows, sheep and goats.
The Maasai people live in Kenya and have to protect their
livestock from the lions so they kill the lions.
Today this is is becoming a problem because more people
are living in Kenya so the lions and humans are getting
closer which puts them both in danger.
Now most lions live only in parts if Africa and India.
There are only 20,000 lions left in the wild. They are
endanger of becoming extinct.
Herders build bomas to protect their livestock. This is
helping to keep predators away with out killing them.
Essay: Why would it be bad if lions became extinct?
Lions help keep life balanced by preying on other animals.
If the lions disappear, life in the environment would
change.
