2015-16 Criminal Justice -- Syllabus -- Mr. McConihe Topics include the models of criminal justice system, policing, the courts, and corrections. Covers many careers in criminal justice and law enforcement. Sources of law, criminal and civil procedures, tort law, negligence, contract law, consumer law, credit law, probate law, and property law will be covered as well. Additional topics include studying crimes, legal ethics, settlements, constitutional law, international law, evidence, legal research, investigations, legal writing of briefs, complaints and memos. Classroom lesson emphasize experimentations, simulations and demonstrations. Mock trial allows for a practice of trial procedures, opening and closing statements, the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt, voir dire, jury deliberations and jury verdicts. This course continues to cover contemporary issues, the U.S. Constitution and Amendments. Emphasis of the official “Search & Seizures and Legal Updates” manual of the Lorain County Sheriffs Department is provided for review of real-life scenarios. A forensic unit is included in the coursework. A guest speaker circuit includes various experts in law, government and law enforcement. Units last two weeks.
