MA in Legal Studies: Carlton University The Carleton University MA in Legal Studies is a research‐oriented interdisciplinary program with a long track record of fostering cutting‐edge interdisciplinary research on law, rights, regulation, crime, representations, and governance. The Department of Law and Legal Studies was established in 1991 and is unique in Canada. Students are taught by award‐ winning faculty members and enjoy the benefits of a department that brings scholars from a variety of fields and disciplines together to study different facets of law. Our faculty members pursue research in areas such as: Political trials and national security measures in Canada The experience of women in drug treatment courts in Canada Business Improvement Areas in local governance and policing Photography and ‘visuality’ in international law and human rights The role of identities (race, ethnicity, gender) in international war crimes prosecutions The legal and cultural constructions of sex workers and their clients 5 The constitution of Canada as a ‘moral’ nation through high profile legal cases We are very proud of the achievements of our students and alumni. For example, 2nd year MA student Danielle McKenzie is the 2013 Canadian Law and Society Association’s winner of the graduate essay prize. Racha Al Abdullah won a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) doctoral award and is now pursuing a doctorate at the School of African and Oriental Studies in London (UK). Katarina Andrejevic has published her MA Thesis on sex trafficking and peacekeeping in post‐conflict Bosnia as a book. Some of our graduates have gone on to academic careers, others have been accepted at competitive professional Law programs, yet others have pursued successful careers in the public service and in the non‐profit sector. At Carleton, incoming MA students have access to financial aid and Teaching Assistant/Research Assistant positions. Legal Studies MA students can choose from a wide variety of graduate level courses in the department and across the university. MA students also benefit from our new Ph.D. program in Legal Studies: they will have PhD students as colleagues in their TA positions and their classes, and they are encouraged to apply for the PhD in Legal Studies if they want to pursue further research. The MA Legal Studies at Carleton is a unique program and a great fit for students with backgrounds in humanities or social sciences who want to pursue interdisciplinary research on law in its many facets and contexts. Every year students share their research and forge new contacts at the Graduate Legal Studies Conference. This year’s conference call for papers can be found here: http://www1.carleton.ca/law/2013/cfp‐legal‐studies‐grad‐conference .
