MIS Teaching Assistant (TA) Job Description
SPRING 2015
This job description defines in general terms the normal duties which the post-holder will be expected to undertake. However, the job or
duties described may vary or be amended from time to time without changing the level of responsibility associated with the post.

Assist with MIS reception (whenever applicable).
Meet any other expectations (within reason) of the instructor/department.
Skills/Knowledge
1. Familiarity with TA area of assigned course(s)/instructor(s) responsibility (i.e., software, equipment, technology, course, etc.).
Refer to the spring 2015 course schedules when available to review MIS course listings.
2. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
Qualifications
1. Successful completion of a minimum of one semester in the MS/MIS degree as a full-time student.
2. Enrolled in the MS/MIS degree program as a full-time student for spring 2015 semester.
3. In good academic standing and with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00.
4. Cannot have honesty code violation(s) on file or in progress.
5. MS/MIS students with scholarships that provide in-state tuition wavier will be considered for MS/MIS TA positions.
6. If you have an internship or job, you will not be eligible to be a TA for MIS.
Maximum TA Employment Duration
Normally a MIS TA is eligible to work up to two terms.
Position Start/End Dates:
1. TA positions start on the semester’s first day of classes and end on the scheduled semester closing date. Spring 2015 semester dates
are Tuesday, January 20, 2015 through Thursday, May 21, 2015. (There may be time scheduled the week before the semester start
date for TAs to attend meetings, finalize access requests, meet with faculty, complete employment paperwork, request SSN, etc.
If you are out of town, you will need to make arrangements to return to UHCL so you can attend these meetings or for processing
required HR paperwork. Attendance at the meetings is mandatory.)
2. TA holiday(s) conform to employee holidays.
Rate of Pay and Payment Schedule:
1. $2,700 for the spring 2015 semester.
2. Paid in four (4) installments for the spring 2015 semester.
3. TA employment makes the student eligible for in-state tuition.
Working Hours and Locations:
Teaching Assistants are employed by the MIS department for 20 hours weekly. These hours are to be spent on MIS
departmental duties mainly in the BUS labs and/or MIS designated locations. The work schedule may include evening and
weekend hours. TA duties, qualifications and expectations are outlined in this document.
Application Process:
1. The following needs to be completed and/or provided to the MIS department (SSCB 3.202) BEFORE 5 PM, MONDAY,
NOVEMBER 3, 2014:
a. Complete the online application from http://prtl.uhcl.edu/portal/page/portal/CSS/Students/On_Campus_Student_Jobs
No hard copy is necessary. It will be provided online to the Dean’s Office and to MIS office.
b. A cover letter with a one-page resume. (See page 2 & 3 of this job description for more information.)
c. Supplemental document. (See page 4 of this document.)
d. If you have a waiver, please provide a hard copy of your waiver notice. If you receive a waiver any time before the
beginning of the Spring 2015 semester, you must provide a copy of the notice.

Special Notes:
 DO NOT apply for a MIS TA position if you cannot be available during the scheduled semester times/dates.
 A social security number is required BEFORE being allowed to work. If you are offered employment, you will need to
be available on campus to process this requirement. It cannot be done by anyone but you.
 Your I-20 must be active for the entire semester for which you are applying. You will not be allowed to work if your I20 is not active.
 You must use your UHCL email account for all TA application related correspondence.

Cover Letter and Resume Guidelines
In applying for this on-campus job, a cover letter with a one-page resume is required. Career Services
is working with MIS on this application requirement by providing three workshops for cover letter and
resume preparation and review. All MIS TA applicants must attend a minimum of one workshop.

The Programming lab seats 40. There will be a registration sheet in the MIS suite for MIS TA applicants
to sign up for one of these required workshop sessions. Applicants should have drafts of their cover
letter and resume available for Career Services to review and help with changes.
REQUIRED:
All MIS TA application cover letters and/or resumes must include the following:

Waiver Status – If you have or had a waiver, please state the type and award period and
provide a hard copy of your award letter with your application.
MISO – Indicate if you are currently a member/officer in good standing with MISO.

Business letters are read quickly. Make your point in the first paragraph.
Single space your letter and skip a line between paragraphs. Use shorter sentences since the letter will
be read quickly. An average sentence should be about twenty words and a paragraph should average
fewer than seven lines. Use an 11 or 12 point size and the same font for the entire document. Do not
