DEAF CULTURE AND COMMUNITY SPA 2631 Course Syllabus STUDENT OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Explain society’s attitudes toward disability in general and deafness in particular and the resulting psychological impact upon the deaf person. 2. Describe the ramification of a deaf child on 1) a hearing family, 2) a deaf family. 3. Explain the psychological effects of various educational environments upon the deaf student including: residential schools, mainstreaming and day programs. 4. Describe the educational and social implications for a child taught using the 1) the oral method, 2) the manual method. 5. Identify the psycho-social ramifications of being hard of hearing. 6. Identify the psycho-social ramifications for individuals who have an adventitious hearing loss. 7. Define the term deaf community and to delineate the characteristics of membership. 8. Define the meaning of culture and describe the rules for social interaction, norms, and values maintained by members of Deaf Culture. 9. Describe the interaction between the deaf experience and environmental factors such as, family, spouses, children, co-workers, and friends. 10. Recognize multicultural aspects of the deaf community, such as Hispanic, AfricanAmerican, Asian, Jewish, Native American, etc.
