Job Description
Main purpose
The post-holder will support research within the UCL Visual Communication Research Group.
In addition to informing our basic understanding of brain development and the neurobiology
of language, aspects of our research will also ultimately inform intervention strategies for
children born profoundly deaf both in terms of education and cochlear implant programmes.
The post-holder will work mainly on an ongoing ‘Speechreading Training and Reading (STaR)’
intervention study.
Job Description
Your responsibilities comprise:




Assisting with data collection from children for the STaR project
helping with recruitment of participants for the STaR project
data coding and data analysis
general duties linked to the running of the Visual Communication Group

PERSON SPECIFICATION
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential:
Experience of working with children
Experience of working in a research environment
Excellent face to face and written communication skills
Excellent team working skills
Excellent organisational skills, able to meet deadlines, manage concurrent tasks and prioritise
Desirable
Training and experience in experimental psychology
Experience of literacy research
Knowledge of BSL
Excellent interpersonal skills with both deaf and hearing people
Experience of working with both deaf and hearing colleagues
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential:
Undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area (e.g. psychology, linguistics, speech and language,
cognitive neuroscience, etc.)
Desirable:
MSc in relevant subject area (e.g. psychology, linguistics, speech and language, cognitive
neuroscience, etc.)
Qualifications in BSL
APTITUDE AND PERSONAL QUALITIES
Essential:
Able to work collaboratively and independently
Accurate and careful attention to detail
Able to work under pressure
Sensitive to the needs of others and to full involvement of all colleagues, both Deaf and hearing
