“Excellence in Theory” method book, recordings, internet resources.
DESCRIPTION:
Open to students in grade 9-12. This is a semester course that will explore the history of music, various genres of music, music
theory, listening, and ear training. Students will have an opportunity to learn how to read music, understand the theory behind music,
and listen to music from each time period.
GOALS/ OUTCOMES
1. Individual progress of understanding of music theory.
2. Understanding of genres of music.
3. Respect and appreciation for all forms of music.
REQUIREMENTS:
Participation in class, written practice assignments in method book, unit quizzes, listening assignments, final project, semester test.
REQUIRED STUDENT MATERIALS: Pencil, “Excellence in Theory” book, folder/binder to keep handouts.

EVALUATION:
Daily participation points will be awarded for positive attitudes toward class activities (daily practice: 10% of grade). Listening and
written assignments will evaluate listening and music theory ability (formative assessment: 30% of grade). Written and listening tests
throughout the semester will evaluate knowledge learned throughout the class (summative assessment: 60% of grade).
GRADING SCALE:
Written, listening, and in class assignments will account for 50% of the grade. Final project will account for 20%, participation in
class for 20%, and final test 10%.
