Orrville: Orrville Public Library Director Daphne Silchuk-Ashcraft grew up around libraries and books as her mother was a librarian. She has worked with libraries for 18 years; 1 ½ years in her current position. She has a passion to share her love of reading with kids, especially those with dyslexia. “The library is about so much more than books” explained Silchuk-Ashcraft. “We offer audio books, music, CDs, and videos, with a large portion of our collection downloadable Emedia. Zinio (which is electronic access to over 120 different magazines for use on any device) is one of our newer additions. As a part of Clevnet, we have access to items from 44 additional libraries which last year brought in over 130,000 items. The library is also a place for social connections such as our book club, cookbook club, hands-on activities and crafts for teens and adults, and a myriad of children’s story times, activities, and reading challenges such as our 1000 books by kindergarten.” The Orrville Public Library has a far reach for resources. Utilize Ancestry.com for free, visit the jobs website, prepare for GED testing, visit the Learning Express, put a hold on a movie a month before its release, visit the quiet study room, or make use of the meeting room. In 2013, approximately 531,000 items were circulated, there were 400-500 visits per day, over 35,000 reference questions were answered, 707 programs were hosted, and services for the home-bound, nursing homes, and Melissa Siburt is using the new Spot Vision eye screening machine in Dalton at a local pre-school. ( Pete Armstrong has been on the Wayne County Fair board for 30 of Fair’s 166 years. The County Fair Board is the authority that operates the fairgrounds and the annual county fair program, promoting agriculture, consumer science, and youth programs. Armstrong says that a misconception many people have is that the fair is run on tax money. This simple is not the case. They are a 501c3, meaning that they are a non-profit organization. They do receive some funding for the horse races from the Ohio State Lottery. The Wayne County Fair always begins the first Saturday after Labor Day. The first day usually entertains the largest crowd, largely in part to the modified tractor pulls. 2009 drew the biggest crowd with 237,000 paid guests entering the fairgrounds. Last year, 117,000 paid guests attended the annual event. 425 contracts for vendors, food trucks and entertainment were sent, 70 are for food vendors alone. The Wayne County Fair holds 4H sales on Thursday and Friday during fair week with 54 clubs in attendance. The fairground consists of 40 acres, 20 which is owned by the commissioners. The buildings, structures and maintenance are the responsibility of the fair board. There are 82 buildings total. Some of those buildings are rented out, after the fair, for storage at $9 per foot with a minimum of $96. The fairgrounds also rent out lots for campers, bringing in $15 per night which includes electric hook up. Many changes have been made in order to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Six trainers board horses at the fairgrounds year-round. Bates Amusement has been brought in for close to 30 years to handle the rides. To learn more about the wide array of events and happenings available at the Wayne County Fair, please visit http://waynecountyfairohio.com/ Orrville Lions Club members read to students during their Right to Read Week. It coincided with Lions International Worldwide Week of Service. It was a great opportunity to strengthen our community, showcase our club and celebrate the birthday of our founder, Melvin Jones. We will earn a Centennial Banner Patch for our banner by participating in this Global Service Action campaign. Would you believe I just took my tree down and it's January?? Crazy retail business in December makes me crazy. Don't have time to enjoy the holidays until it's almost over, so I enjoy the peace and serenity of January. Of course, along with the silence, my slowing down always lets the germs take over...my annual cold. So sad that I missed so many fun activities and a chance to schmooze with all of you. We are a much happier group when investing time to make life a little easier for those in need. I love seeing Lions pictures in the paper (and boy, are Orrville Lions in the paper), in Newsletters, in the Lions Magazine. I love all of you for what you stand for, a working and loving and giving Lion. We are the envy of most clubs in our District and get many mentions at our Council of Governor's meetings. This whole state is aware of Orrville Lions and all the accomplishments and hard work. I take every opportunity to brag about all of you. Our District Leadership School will take place May 9, 8:30 AM, Living Water Church, 200 N.Kurzen Rd. Dalton, OH 44618. This will be the best one ever...workshops for the prospective officers , Pilot Dog Program, Leo Program, Newsletter class, Membership class, featuring the Ohio Plan to help increase membership. Classes will be repeated, so you can catch all the ones beneficial to you. Snacks and coffee provided (oops, and cheese!!). I will bring a flyer out to a meeting soon, with all the details Keep in mind, the International Convention is in June in Honolulu. I have a week of rigorous training before being installed, so am taking a week in Maui to goof off and see old friends before the convention starts. Boy, do I ever need a vacation...am planning on being on the beach (nope, no bikini) and snoozing to tropical music and the ocean waves lapping at my toes.. Keep up the fabulous work, Orrville Lions, you are the best!!!! Rita O Executive Director of the Y, Susan Tucker (front center), spoke about the many benefits available to the community through programs geared to build a healthy spirit, mind, and body. The Y serves a wide age range of infant and childcare through senior citizens. “We try to make the Y available to everyone, even providing scholarships for memberships when necessary. Over 80% of our families in childcare receive financial assistance. We serve over 100 children each day” said Tucker. “Membership to the Y includes land and water fitness classes in addition to use of the weight room and pool. Our learn-to-swim program is offered to local 3rd and 4th graders for a nominal fee in hopes all children will learn to swim by 5th grade.” Tucker spoke about the seniors that work out in the facility and stay afterwards for camaraderie over coffee. The high school has a high quality and top scoring swim team which practices at the Y. There truly is something for everyone Y. We are so lucky to have such a great facility and wonderful programs in such a small community. Hobie and Kathi Bond went to Pasadena, CA to see the Rose Bowl Parade. They’re proudly standing by the Lions International float. The Relieving the Hunger Global Service Action Campaign is going strong through the end of January.
