W e’re proud to report that by any measure the 2014 Ravinia season was a rousing success. Th e photos over the next several pages should give you an idea of its artistic success, and going strictly by the numbers, Ravinia exceeded its goals in both earned and contributed income.
Perhaps the measure we’re proudest of is that we exceeded our most important goal of increasing Pavilion audiences for Chicago Symphony Orchestra concerts. We aspired to average 2,000 seats sold per CSO concert, and we actually sold 2,225. Th at’s equivalent to a sold-out concert at Disney
Hall, oversold at Severance Hall and 750 seats more than the Harris Th eater’s capacity. Th is was achieved in large part with $25 tickets for most Pavilion seats and a wide spectrum of programming, including symphonic pops with
Th e Lord of the Rings—Th e Return of the King the runaway hit of the 2014 residency.
We supported these CSO programs with $10 pricing for most lawn tickets and free lawn admission for children and students. We dedicated one entire side of our foldout calendar/brochure to a deeper look at our classical programs and added more notes and information to our redesigned, mobile-friendly website. We experimented with little surprises for the audience at all CSO events, such as free wedding cake at Th e Marriage of Figaro; created brief video intros for select concerts; and the Ravinia
Associates Board hosted audience-building, pre-concert parties, such as “Beer, Brats and Beethoven” and “A Hobbit
Happening.”
All told, more than 150,000 people attended CSO concerts and other classical events, meaning that Ravinia attracted over 10 percent of our potential audience from the 20mile radius documented to be where our classical music audience lives; that’s almost three times the NEA’s population penetration for classical music nationwide. Do we want to do better? Certainly, and we are implementing new strategies for growing our classical music audience, some of which will work, some of which may not. But we refuse to confuse “hope”—generally accepted elsewhere in classical music—with strategy.
Of course, classical music is just part of the picture for our audience of cultural omnivores. Ravinia presented more than 140 performances, from Mozart to Maxwell, between
June 14 and September 16. In the fi nal “Welz Around
Town” column in the local Landmark newspapers, we challenged audiences to name their favorite concerts of the season, and the results proved why Ravinia is considered the most programmatically diverse festival in the country.
Some 2014 highlights include Patricia Racette starring for the fi rst time in the title role of Salome with James Conlon conducting the CSO in honor of the sesquicentennial of
composer Richard Strauss; Highland Park resident and
Smashing Pumpkins talent-trust Billy Corgan making his Ravinia debut with a critically acclaimed concert that covered every era of his music making; the virtuosic and charismatic Joshua Bell headlining the Women’s Board’s annual gala to support the not-for-profi t Ravinia Festival and its REACH*TEACH*PLAY education programs; one of the country’s great jam bands, Chicago’s own Umphrey’s
McGee, paying homage to Ravinia’s rich history in their festival debut by having a string ensemble join them on stage; the inimitable fl utist James Galway and the CSO performing the American premiere of Riverdance composer
Bill Whelan’s Linen and Lace concerto; and the many wonderful artists on the year-round $10 BGH Classics series, which gives audiences of all ages an intimate experience with classical music for less than the price of a movie ticket.
Guests enjoyed several changes at Ravinia this season, including the installation of Silent Music by Jaume Plensa
(best known to Chicagoans for the spitting fountains at Millennium Park), a sculptural representation of a childhood enveloped in his father’s music making.
Th at subject makes it a fi tting focal point for the newly established KidsLawn, a friendly environment where families with young children can picnic and enjoy a concert after playing with large-scale musical instruments (which parents seemed to enjoy as much as the children). We changed the menu and ambiance of our donor dining club, the Freehling Room, to include lighter fare in a more
casual atmosphere on non-classical concert nights, and changed membership policies to allow more donors to take advantage of this exclusive perk. We replaced the Ravinia app with a completely redesigned, mobile-friendly website that allows all of Ravinia.org to function as an app. Finally, we erected a new lighting system to help lawn audiences pack up at the end of a concert.
More changes are coming for 2015, including enhanced Wi-
Fi; a reconstructed bus turnaround that safely segregates pedestrians from motorists and allows Park ’n’ Ride users more effi cient load-in while reducing noise and emissions for our neighbors; a widened entrance to our south parking lot to match the width of the street that feeds it, removing the bottleneck; and beautifi cation of the back of the Harza Building with architectural features that speak to the nearby south gateway.
Next year will also bring a celebration of James Conlon in his 11th and fi nal season as music director of the
CSO residency. Programs, including Ravinia’s fi rst full performance of Wagner’s Th e Flying Dutchman, will recall the themes and music of his more than three decades of conducting at Ravinia. We cannot thank James enough for the artistry and passion he exudes.
We must also thank the most impressive group of business leaders and philanthropists one is likely to see gathered in a single room, our fi scally wise board of trustees. Ravinia would never have reached its 110th anniversary, which we marked in 2014, without the stewardship of such inspired leaders.
A huge debt of gratitude is owed to our Women’s Board, an insightful and active-beyond-description group of volunteers whose hosting of the annual gala and management of the gift shop and chair-rental service have made them the single biggest donor in Ravinia history. Th anks also go to our Associates Board, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this summer with its most successful Music Matters fundraiser to date, honoring its founding president and Ravinia Life Trustee David
Weinberg. Th eir annual support helps make possible such
REACH*TEACH*PLAY programs as the Jazz Scholars and Mentors, which unites the best players from Chicago
Public Schools with the best jazz pros in the city, honing them into a true ensemble (one of these students, Alexis
Lanier, even joined Welz Kauff man in a four-hand piano performance at Millennium Park this summer).
Ravinia could not exist without its donors and corporate sponsors, who provide nearly half the money it takes to run the festival each year. Special recognition goes out to
Food Network for hosting its daylong festival of music, food and wine, which brought more than 150 of Chicago’s fi nest purveyors along with performances by John Mayer and Phillip Phillips to Ravinia—furthering the link between music and food that makes up the full Ravinia experience, considering that chefs are the latest maestros of our time.
We applaud the fi ne teaching artists and fellows who make
Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute one of the world’s most immersive post-graduate music conservatories, giving young professionals a chance to reach audiences with such off erings as a music theater night and a Kiri Te Kanawa residency that featured the world premiere of a Jake
Heggie–penned song cycle commissioned by Ravinia to celebrate the singer’s 70th birthday.
We acknowledge the wonderful relationship we have with our hometown, Highland Park, and we are proud to contribute to the city more than a million dollars this year, representing 5 percent of the festival’s gross ticket revenue.
Last but not least, we thank all 600,000 music lovers out there who appreciate what we do. It’s more than a goal; it’s our mission to bring you the world’s fi nest music across a variety of genres. Th e ultimate measure of our success would be welcoming you back next summer.

International sculptor Jaume Plensa, best known to Chicagoans for the spitting fountains in Millennium Park, visited Ravinia for the unveiling of his giant walk-in sculpture Silent Music . Plensa’s intent was to create a piece that evoked the feeling of being enveloped in music that he felt as a child hiding in his father’s piano. This addition to Ravinia’s sculpture collection is the focal point of KidsLawn, a new, family-friendly space that features oversized musical instruments for children (and many parents) to play with before select concerts. Life Trustees Richard Hunt and Stan Freehling, who started Ravinia’s sculpture collection, were on hand for the unveiling, along with donors Joel and Carole Bernstein.

Ravinia’s 2014 season was dubbed “Summer of Love/Season of Stars” because of the romantic programming and full spectrum of headliners across all genres. At the heart of the romance were three interpretations of the greatest love story ever told, Romeo and Juliet , including a suite from Prokofi ev’s ballet, Tchaikovsky’s concert overture and the Oscar-winning fi lm West Side Story featuring music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by
Stephen Sondheim, book by Arthur Laurents and choreography by Jerome Robbins.
James Conlon conducted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in two Mozart operas, the stories of a lothario in Don Giovanni and a lover in The Marriage of Figaro , for which
Ravinia surprised the audiences with complimentary wedding cake.
Ravinia packed more than 140 events into over 100 days in 2014, including the annual Chicago Symphony Orchestra residency and one of the most extensive chamber music series in the world. Guest artists included Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, who performed the world premiere of a song cycle commissioned by Ravinia from Jake Heggie and gave a master class with fellows from Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute.
The soulful John Legend immediately set the bar high, opening the 2014 season with a sold-out concert just as his single “All of
Me” topped the charts and dominated the airwaves. The intimate, acoustic evening may rank as one of Ravinia’s all-time greatest date nights.
Perhaps the world’s most famous fl utist,
Sir James Galway, opened the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra residency with the world premiere of Linen and Lace , a fl ute concerto he commissioned from Riverdance composer Bill Whelan, who also attended the Ravinia concert. Ravinia President and
CEO Welz Kauffman also accompanied
James and Lady Jeanne Galway for traditional Irish tunes.
Patricia Racette starred for the fi rst time in the title role of Richard Strauss’s take on the story of Salome, the teen temptress whose lust incites the murder of John the Baptist. James Conlon conducted the CSO in just one of the many concerts Ravinia presented to celebrate the composer’s 150th birthday.
GOOD
The often-elusive R&B superstar Maxwell made his Ravinia debut with such songs as “The Fire We Make,” “Fortunate,”
“Simply Beautiful” and “Fistful of Tears.”
Guitarist Miloš caused a stir on two shores as members of Ravinia’s Women’s Board met the
“young artist of the year” ( Gramophone , 2011) in London before the celebrated guitarist made his Ravinia debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on a program of classical music that doubled as fi lm scores. He returned four days later for an up-close and personal guitar recital in the Martin Theatre.
With a following as loyal as the Grateful Dead’s, the
Chicago-based jam band Umphrey’s McGee brought a legion of new listeners to Ravinia for its festival debut.
The Ravinia Associates Board celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014 and honored its founding president, David Weinberg, at its annual fundraising dinner-dance and auction,
Music Matters, which raised nearly $500,000 this year. The group of young business leaders supports the not-for-profi t Ravinia Festival and its REACH*TEACH*PLAY education programs.
BELL
Sought out as a gala artist around the world, violinist Joshua Bell headlined the annual
Women’s Board Gala featuring James Conlon conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The gala evening, the only concert fundraiser that supports the not-for-profi t Ravinia Festival and its REACH*TEACH*PLAY education programs, raised more than $1 million this year. The Women’s
Board also raises funds for Ravinia by operating the gift shop and chair rental service.
Ravinia’s fi nal presentation in the Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Return of the King , became the fi rst CSO concert to sell out completely in the Pavilion and on the lawn.
As with the fi rst two fi lms, Howard Shore’s score was digitally removed from the movie so that the CSO could play the music live with the movie. The 1961 Best-Picture Oscar winner,
West Side Story , received similar treatment along with a radiantly remastered picture.
Together the fi lms brought 38,034 guests to experience the CSO.
Country superstar Carrie Underwood returned to
Ravinia to perform her biggest hits accompanied by an orchestra—and accompanied by the baby she’s carrying. She joked from the stage that she needed a set list because she forgot what to sing next, blaming it on “pregnancy brain.” Photos of
Underwood showing her “baby bump” for the fi rst time at Ravinia ran in publications around the world.
PAWS
The genius behind Smashing Pumpkins and a resident of Highland Park, Billy Corgan made his Ravinia debut winning great reviews for his music and his philanthropy. Corgan offered free concert tickets to anyone who successfully applied to foster a cat or dog through PAWS.
All the pets available for adoption at Ravinia on the concert night found permanent homes, and Corgan thrilled audiences with music from all phases of his career.
Following her portrayal of opera legend Nellie Melba on the television sensation Downton
Abbey , the glorious Kiri Te Kanawa celebrated her 70th birthday by giving the world premiere of a song cycle by Jake Heggie that Ravinia commissioned for the occasion, Newer
Every Day , a setting of poems by Emily Dickinson. Kiri was also accompanied on the concert by Kevin Murphy, director of the program for singers at Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, where Kiri once again mentored young singers who auditioned for a coveted slot in Ravinia’s summer conservatory.
To mix up Superman similes, Train, always a fan favorite, sold tickets faster than a speeding locomotive when they teamed for the fi rst time with The Wallfl owers for two nights in 2014.
Ravinia’s new, casually elegant, semi-private party space
Lawncierge was all the rage in
2014, returning on its investment and creating buzz, including an entire episode of WCIU’s You and Me This Morning broadcast live from the space, which was sponsored by Celebrity Cruises. It was also featured on ABC’s Windy
City Live and NBC’s First Look .
The incredible soprano Dawn
Upshaw introduced Ravinia fans to the song cycle for which she recently won a Grammy, Winter Morning
Walks by Maria Schneider, on a
Martin Theatre concert with The
Knights, an inventive orchestra that reconfi gures itself for a wide variety of musical explorations. Co-founder and concertmaster Colin Jacobsen is an alumnus of Ravinia’s Steans Music
Institute. The Knights also performed in the Pavilion with Yo-Yo Ma the following night.
Food Network in Concert at Ravinia put an exclamation point on the 2014 season with a daylong festival of food, wine and music that featured the Ravinia debuts of John Mayer and
American Idol winner Phillip Phillips. The complete takeover of the festival grounds included
150 of Chicago’s favorite chefs with samples of their staples, while celebrity chefs from Food
Network led tastings and demonstrations.

“On initial encounter, Racette’s depraved little Judean princess was a most impressive feat of artistic derring-do, and a potent reminder of the potential for intelligent singers to conquer what might seem an unlikely assignment through technical acumen and sheer determination... Th e cast [of
Salome] was uniformly fi rst-rate.”
—Mark Th omas Ketterson,
Opera News
“Racette scored a considerable success. … Her gutsy and compelling performance set the seal on a concert rendition [of Salome] that … tingled with nerve’s-end excitement.”
—John von Rhein, Chicago Tribune
“I am thankful to the Ravinia Music Festival for giving high priority to public safety.”
—Richard Hocking in Highland Park News

“I love Ravinia, and I love the atmosphere. My family likes to come up and hear me play.”
—Joshua Bell in CS magazine
“It was at Ravinia that Conlon, like Levine before him, cut his teeth on the symphonic repertory before establishing his reputation at home and in Europe.”
—John von Rhein, Chicago Tribune
“Some of the projects the CSO has done to perform live fi lm soundtracks have been extremely rewarding artistically.”
—John Bruce Yeh in Chicago Sun-Times
“Th at he [Urbański] is no mere fl ashy wunderkind of the baton was shown by the freshly invigorated playing he drew from the CSO... He conducted from memory and was able to elicit musical statements from the orchestra that carried a personal and convincing point of view... His ‘New World’
[Symphony] combined analytical clarity with lyrical warmth that had this Romantic staple pulsing with new life … an interpretation of strength, drive, thoughtful balance and vivid personality.”
—John von Rhein, Chicago Tribune
stage director, David Lefkowich, who knows how to use the theater’s stage apron, boxes and aisles to maximum effectiveness in focusing and projecting the drama. …
The high-powered array of international singing actors appeared to thrive because of the physical limitations...
Conlon was very much inside each and every dramatic moment.”
—John von Rhein, Chicago Tribune
“Midori seemed determined to make us believe in its
[Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto’s] considerable charms all over again. With Mälkki offering a full-blooded accompaniment that was truly symphonic in scale, the violinist succeeded admirably... What really lifted this reading beyond the ordinary was the meditative songfulness she brought to the slow movement, a section other violinists treat merely as a sweet little interlude.”
—John von Rhein, Chicago Tribune
“It is very much Mälkki’s moment, and she’s seizing it with a vengeance... Mälkki is all purposeful vigor on the podium, and she directs that vigor entirely toward the music... So decisively did she shape the symphonic elements that the
Shakespearean tragedy [Romeo and Juliet] unfolded vividly in the mind’s eye. Tybalt and Mercutio locked sabers with such charged intensity that you could almost see the sparks coming off their blades.”
—John von Rhein, Chicago Tribune
“She [Kiri Te Kanawa] was the one for all those years, and she actually made me like opera when I didn’t know I liked opera... Aside from the fact that it is just a ravishingly beautiful voice that is plummy and full, there is always this very joyful core to it, where you could tell that she loved singing.”
—Jake Heggie in Chicago Sun-Times
“What really stirs the artist’s [Dan Tepfer’s] enthusiasm is breaking the rules, jumping musical boundaries and investigating anything new. He especially likes to find inventive ways to juxtapose and blend classical music and jazz, drawing on his strong background in both.”
—Kyle MacMillan, Chicago Sun-Times
“Everything I do, there needs to be a challenge in it. So the ‘Goldberg’ Variations thing is very much that for me.
When I first started doing that, it seemed completely impossible to me, and I’m still kind of amazed that I’m performing that music now.”
—Dan Tepfer in Chicago Sun-Times
“This [Don Giovanni] was one Mozart concert opera in which everyone was on fire, not just the dissolute don when the
Commendatore he has killed drags him to the abyss in the penultimate scene. … It was hard to single out individual performances for praise, given the fact that everyone was so good....Once again Conlon was working with a trusted

Memorializing the festival’s former, longtime executive director, the Edward
Gordon Society recognizes donors who have provided for Ravinia in their estate plans. Many members enjoy immediate tax benefits and estate tax savings. They also receive Ravinia benefits, including ticketing privileges and Freehling Room membership. We thank all Edward
Gordon Society members for their steadfast commitment to Ravinia’s future.
Created in 2011 in memory of the distinguished festival chairman from
1971 to 1975, the Marion Lloyd Circle recognizes Edward Gordon Society members who have designated one or more major planned gifts to Ravinia with a value at or exceeding $100,000. We are sincerely grateful to the following Marion
Lloyd Circle members for their exemplary generosity. For more information about the Marion Lloyd Circle, please contact

Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute (RSMI) is the festival’s renowned summer conservatory and the top rung of
Ravinia’s comprehensive approach to educational development. Each year several emerging young professional musicians transform into full-fledged performers on the Bennett Gordon Hall stage during free, public concerts and master classes with world-class artists throughout the summer, as well as on the
$10 BGH Classics concert series.

The invaluable instruction and performance opportunities at RSMI are only possible because of generous donors. Relying directly on contributions from these dedicated supporters to fund these vital programs, RSMI provides its participants with everything they need—from practical housing and meals to priceless lessons and master classes with a renowned faculty—so that they can focus fully on their craft.
By removing financial considerations,
Ravinia affords RSMI participants an opportunity to learn from the world’s best pedagogues at a critical time in their career development. In addition to annual support, RSMI relies heavily on its endowment to make these important programs possible.

To solidify and strengthen RSMI’s bright future, Ravinia launched an important campaign to bolster the RSMI endowment in order to assure that these programs will be available free of charge to gifted musicians for many years to come. We thank our donors who have helped provide for the future of RSMI with a gift of $300 or more to the Everything for the Artist 25th anniversary endowment campaign between September 30, 2009, and September 30, 2014. We also greatly appreciate the donors below who have given a gift of $300 or more to RSMI’s annual operating fund between October
1, 2012, and September 30, 2014, to help bring these programs to life this summer.

Businessman, entrepreneur and Ravinia Life Trustee Emory
Williams was born in Falco, AL, and grew up in Quitman, MS.
He graduated from Emory University in 1932 and the following year he took a job at an Atlanta warehouse of Sears Roebuck
& Co., with which he was long affi liated. After serving in the
Army during the Second World War, he ran Sears’ Brazilian operations, ultimately becoming the corporation’s chief fi nancial offi cer during the 1960s, a decade during which Sears was the largest retailer in the world. He went on to become president and chairman of the Sears Bank and served as a director of more than a half-dozen New York Stock Exchange companies. A passionate Ravinia booster, he contributed time, resources and leadership to the festival and became a member of the Ravinia
Board of Trustees in 1972, serving as board president from 1973 to 1978. In 1973 he helped establish the “Fund to Assure Ravinia’s
Future,” the festival’s endowment, and in 1979 was named a
Ravinia Life Trustee. His contributions were formally recognized in 2009, when he was given Ravinia’s
Marion Lloyd Award. He passed away at the age of 102 at his home in Hobe Sound, FL, surrounded by family members and music-making as his wife, Ravinia Women’s Board member Janet, and their children sang to him while his daughter, Women’s Board member Carol Schroeder, accompanied on piano via telephone. Ravinia will miss his wisdom, counsel, love of music and fantastic sense of humor.

Overall the festival enjoyed another healthy fi scal year. Total festival operating revenues for fi scal 2014 reached $23.2 million, fl at against 2013 despite three canceled shows that resulted in a loss of $1 million in admission revenues and drops in other earned revenue areas such as parking, Levy Restaurants, group sales and Ravinia Gifts. Admissions revenue for fi scal 2014 totaled
$21 million versus $21.2 million in 2013. Net-revenue-generating
(NRG) shows posted a record profi t of $5.3 million, and the Chicago
Symphony concerts continued to lose money, growing to a $3.36 million loss in 2014. Production costs of nearly $19.5 million in 2014 exceeded the
2013 level by $653,000, despite the savings of $780,000 from the canceled shows. Th e majority of the increase came from rising artist fees, additional security, and show cancellation insurance (primarily for weather concerns). In addition, Ravinia contributed 5 percent of gross ticket revenues, or over $1 million, to the City of Highland Park as part of the 10-year agreement with the city.
Contributed income had a record year, mainly driven by support from non-classical audiences, totaling $12.6 million versus $11.8 million in 2013, up by $800,000, or 7 percent. In addition, the Women’s
Board contributed $1.03 million to the festival in 2014—including $638,000 to current festival operations and $25,000 to Ravinia’s Steans Music
Institute (RSMI), with the remainder set aside for future projects—and the Ravinia Associates Board contributed $510,000. Other operating expenses were up slightly against 2013, totaling $11.8 million in 2014 compared to $11.7 million the previous year.
Ravinia ended the year with a small defi cit of $70,000 before the endowment draw and after counting depreciation expenses; another successful year. Ravinia’s endowment fund draw, which is 4.5 percent of the three year rolling average, is $3.1 million. After covering the operating loss, the net $3.038 million balance will be transferred to the festival’s fi xed-asset fund. Th is transfer, coupled with the $2.2 million of funded depreciation expense will bring the fi xed-asset fund balance to approximately $14.2 million. Given the size of this balance, we will begin to invest a portion with the endowments and per their investment objectives and policy in order to gain larger returns.
