Dear Parent/Carer
Re-: Notification of partial closure on Thursday 10th July 2014 due to strike action by NUT, Unison and GMB,
Thursday 10th July 2014.
Following my letter earlier, I can confirm to you that there will be a day of strike action on Thursday 10th July 2014.
The trade unions involved in this action are NUT, Unison and GMB. The dispute is in defence of the current teachers’
pension scheme, other proposed for changes to teachers’ conditions, and rejection of the Local Government Pay
award.
As Headteacher I have assessed the impact of the strike action on the school. Due to the numbers of staff involved,
there will be serious operational difficulties. Consequently, l have decided that the school will have to close to
pupils in years 7, 8, 9 & 10. Year 12 students will be expected to come into school. This decision has not been
taken lightly and we regret having to take this action but feel that there will not be sufficient staff in school to
ensure the safety and wellbeing of the children.
Years 12 are asked to consult notices on Tuesday 9th July to find out which classes are taking place. When there is no
class students will not be supervised and will be expected to leave the school site at these times. The school cannot
accept responsibility for them at these times. The vast majority of these students are now 16 years of age and
above and are responsible young adults.
All other students should carry on with independent study using the following websites:

If industrial action is called off at the last minute, the decision to reopen the school may have to be taken at short
notice. Full updates will be posted on the school website www.bishopstopfords.enfield.sch.uk.
Parents will be responsible for their child on Thursday 10th July 2014. We are asking parents to nominate a place of
safety, which may be your home, to which your child can go on Thursday 10th July 2014 and any days that we have
to close. Students will be back in school on Friday 11th July 2014.
We must all hope that the issues over which the industrial action has arisen are resolved as soon as possible. I
apologise for any inconvenience caused to your family.
If you have any concerns about the arrangements please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.
Yours sincerely
Paul Woods
