Alexandria Museum of Art
From the Director
July brings our annual Faculty & Friends invitational exhibition, Independence Day, the end of our fiscal
year, and sweltering heat. This exhibition celebrates those who teach and inspire, local collectives of
artists that seek to inspire one another, and opens a conversation about how artists tell our community
story. The age-old question of art imitating life or life imitating art comes to mind, when I think about art
and community. In my own art, I find that either I am seeking escape in landscapes that imitate life or I am
confronting an issue wanting to impact the viewer to action – or at least thought.
As we approach the Fourth of July holiday, we also approach the end of our second year of working to be
self-sustaining, after budget cuts from the university system. Our new independence has been challenging,
but good. We have successfully built an exhibition season with companion programming that has allowed
us to increase membership and audience. The Museum impacts nearly every segment of our society,
from school children to Alzheimer’s patients. We provide thoughtful content that educates, explores,
and uplifts. AMoA is a community-gathering place to enjoy perusing art market vendors and listening to
music, poetry, and interesting speakers. We support healthy living by offering yoga and providing support
services for many downtown walks and runs. AMoA is a terrific place to spend your time and to invest in.
Which brings me to the year-end. This year, we end our fiscal year on target, and are now focused on
planning the year ahead. I am grateful to the foundations and grantors who have supported our vision and
allowed us to build this institution for our community. I also want to thank all those that have sponsored
and embraced the Louisiana Dragon Boat Races, which funds approximately 12% of our budget. Also,
those who have celebrated the culinary arts with us at our Farm to Table Dinner fundraisers, held several
times during the year, which are also important to our bottom line. This August, we will host Bourbon,
Beer and BBQ where you will have the opportunity to sample some of the fare from the BBQ masters who
compete in our area, along with interesting pairings.
The lifeblood of our organization is our membership – that means you! Thank you for joining us in our
mission to bring art to everyone and raise the quality of life for our community. I ask you to continue to
help build a museum we can be proud of by spreading the word to your friends and neighbors and inviting
them to join. Also, when that membership renewal comes in the mail, I ask that you consider raising your
level of giving, if at all possible, in order to assure that the Museum can continue to impact students and
citizens in a healing and positive way.
And remember, when its 102 degrees this summer, it’s always a comfortable 70 degrees inside AMoA,
where you can explore the world of art. See you at the Museum!

Unraveling Time, Creating Space
Through August 24
A group exhibition of contemporary Native artists explores created spaces
transcending time and place. The illusion of a singular identity is unraveled
through contemporary reworkings of weaving, performance, beadwork,
storytelling, mythology, and symbolism that infuse both historical and
contemporary processes and references. Imaginary space suspended
beyond multiple realities highlight a more honest and accurate depiction
of self and suggests new models of thinking and engaging with the world.
Featuring artists Julie Buffalohead, Erica Lord, James Luna, Jacob Meders,
Sarah Sense, Yatika Starr Fields, and Will Wilson. Curator: Alyssa Fridgen

Highlights from the 3rd Annual
Louisiana Dragon Boat Races™
Alexandria Museum of Art presented its 3rd Annual Louisiana Dragon Boat Races™
on the scenic Red River on May 11, 2013. It was viewed from the amphitheater in
downtown Alexandria, Louisiana. Drawing more than 10,000 attendees and 1,000
race participants, this spirited day of racing featured more teams, food, elaborate
costumes, and entertainment – on and off the water – than ever before. This year,
the Louisiana Dragon Boat Races became part of AlexRiverFête, a free family
festival celebrating the arts, culture, and heritage of central Louisiana.
Dragon boating is visually spectacular, easy to learn, extremely safe, and inclusive
of any age, gender, or athletic ability, which has made it a popular team-building
activity for community organizations and corporations. The annual Louisiana
Dragon Boat Races™ event has been a vital incubator in the revitalization of
downtown Alexandria and showcase of possibilities for the underused riverfront.
As part of the festival, AMoA presented an Interactive Art Exhibition featuring
highly-interactive art that invited participation. Artists created interactive art
inspired by local community themes and the spirit of the races.
Alexandria Museum of Art endeavors to establish programming that is
collaborative in nature, beneficial to the community, and advances our mission to
preserve, exhibit and promote visual art throughout Central Louisiana in a way that
contributes to the quality of life. The Interactive Art Exhibition complemented this
mission by highlighting the social role of art as seen in neighborhood revitalization,
historic preservation and community service.
Racers on the scenic Red River vie for the fastest time at the 3rd Annual

Leveraging Your Employer’s Matching Gift Program
Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contribution
made by their employees. This means the impact of your gift may be doubled or possibly
tripled!
To find out if your company has a matching gift policy, search this database: http://www.
matchinggift.com/lsu/ or ask your HR office.
If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your employer, and send it
completed and signed with your gift. We will do the rest.
Thank you for your support of AMoA!
Leaving a Legacy
Planned giving is a powerful way to impact your community and create a lasting legacy.
While bequests through one’s will is the most common form of planned giving, planned
giving encompasses so much more. Charitable gift annuities, charitable lead trusts, life
insurance, retirement plans, and property donations are all planned gifts. While some of
those mechanisms are complicated and donors need the assistance of their financial advisor,
planned giving is an opportunity to leverage one’s philanthropic dollar in a significant way.
The Alexandria Museum of Art has been a recipient of several planned gifts. Ten years ago,
a generous couple set aside funds in a charitable lead trust. The couple named a number of
charities to receive quarterly income from the trust during the ten-year life of the trust. At
the end of the ten years, their children are now receiving their share of the corpus tax-free.
These funds allowed the Museum to grow its operations, including expanding the Curator
position from part-time to full-time. Another example of this community’s generosity was
the recent bequest from the Estate of Junice “June” Leckrone received in February 2013. This
donation will further advance the mission of the Museum as it strives to raise the quality of
life in Central Louisiana.
For more information on supporting AMoA through planned giving, please contact Sarah
Cortell Vandersypen at (318) 443-3458.
Business Partners
The generosity of corporate members
provides critical support to the Museum’s
operations, and allows it to continue its
mission. Business Partners enable AMoA
to provide diverse audiences with firstclass art experiences, ensuring continued
cultural growth and education in Central
Louisiana. Corporate philanthropy also
offers many benefits, including greater
brand awareness, museum privileges for
employees and clients, and the option to
entertain in AMoA’s beautiful building.
A strong museum and visual arts culture
helps promote and stimulate a vibrant
city, and ideal place to build a business and
professionally engage with a community.
To join as a Business Partner or for more
