November/December 2006
Inside this issue:
Season’s Greetings everyone!
As the end of the year approaches, it seems
that some undefined law of physics ensures
that ‘as the pace of activities and events
increases, the ability to keep up and
accomplish one’s tasks become exponentially
more difficult’.
With this in mind, we
extend our thanks to everyone who took the
time, and braved the cold to attend the
Festive Social held on November 28. The
Fairmont provided an elegant setting for
members to make or renew acquaintances,
while helping raise money for charity. The
evening’s silent auction helped raise over
$600 in donations which will be provided to
Inn From the Cold, a charity providing
shelter to families in time of need. A very
BIG thank you to donors of auction items,
successful bidders and all members attending
this event.
to those new members joining the Calgary
IIA.
• Designations were recently awarded at
the monthly luncheon to Calgary’s newest
CIA’s. Check the website for details and
photos.
A large number of candidates wrote CIA
exams over the two-day, four-exam program
held in November. We extend our thanks to
member CIA’s who served as exam proctors
and assisted behind the scenes to handle
facilities and exams for this event. Refer to
the website for details of the exam and CIA
members who helped with this event.
For the second consecutive newsletter, we
share the happy news of a Board Member
who recently became a mother.
On
November 4th, our Newsletter Governor,
Liz Curle and her husband Ian became the
proud parents of a baby girl, Elena Fiona.

THE INSTITUTE OF INTERNAL AUDITORS - CALGARY CHAPTER
Monthly Luncheon
Topic: The Challenge of Value: The Governance of IT Investments
By Speaker: John Thorp
Date: Wednesday December 13, 2006
11:30 – 12:00 Reception and Networking
12:00 – 1:00 Lunch and Feature Presentation
DESCRIPTION:
Most organizations continue to fall far short of realizing the potential value of their investments in information
technology. This is a symptom of the failure of corporate governance to evolve to meet the needs of a complex
and rapidly changing business environment. We continue to focus on the technology when we should instead
be focusing on the changes that IT both enables and requires. The challenge facing today’s audit and information security management professionals is to ensure that the appropriate governance mechanisms are in place
for IT-enabled business investments to deliver optimal value, at an affordable cost, with an acceptable level of
risk. John’s presentation will outline techniques that can be applied to assess and improve an organization’s
value creation capabilities and some of the key risks, exposures and mitigating controls that should be considered when developing the organization’s value governance processes and practices.
SPEAKER BIO:
John is an internationally sought-after management consultant with over 40 years experience covering all aspects of the information management field. Author of "The Information Paradox", John's focus is on realizing
the benefits of information technology-enabled change. A highly effective strategist, communicator and facilitator, he has led many assignments in strategic planning, organizational change, and value management.
John is a frequent speaker on various aspects of strategic planning, information as a strategic resource, and the
effective management of information technology (IT). He addresses and advises leaders of the world's largest
organizations in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia-Pacific, including Fortune 100 companies.
Over the last five years, John's work has extended beyond IT to the broader issues of Enterprise Value Management, and Strategic Governance.
John is a Certified Management Consultant, holds the Canadian Information Processing Society's I.S.P. professional designation, and is a member of the Society for Information Management in the United States.
As President of The Thorp Network Inc., a BC Corporation, based in North Saanich, John offers a number of

It is critical for companies to build a sustainable model that they work toward a cost efficient model that focus on key risks, effective controls and leveraging on technology.

And while it takes courage to achieve greatness, it takes more courage to find
fulfillment in being ordinary. For the joys that last have little relationship to
achievement, to standing one step higher on the victory platform. It is daring to
love just for the pleasure of giving it away. It is working hard for the pure joy
of being tired at the end of the day. It is caring and sharing and giving…
Marilyn Thomsen
Results will be available in early 2007. Good luck to all writers! The next exam
cycle is May 2007.
If you are interested in the CIA designation, visit the IIA Global website for
more details.
If you require additional information, please contact Hugh Tanner, the

On December 4th, Allan Manarin,
Karen Shillingford and Tara Tobler
spoke to an Auditing class at Mount
Royal College's Bissett School of
Business to give students a view into
the internal auditing discipline.
They discussed the different types of internal audits, the variety of
backgrounds and skill-sets of internal auditors, the role of the IIA, and the
various internal auditing designations, including the CIA. It was a great
interactive discussion with the class, with some very thoughtful questions.
We are making arrangements to do similar presentations to MRC classes in the
winter term.
The Calgary Chapter is working to build relationships with the major educational
institutions in the Calgary area and has completed similar presentations to U of
C and U of L students over the last couple of years. The Calgary Chapter also
sponsors scholarship awards at U of C and MRC.
Winter Social and
Silent Auction a
Success!
Thanks to everyone who braved the extremely cold weather last Tuesday to attend our Seasonal Social and
Silent Auction. Over $600 was raised for the charity Inn from the Cold, which, on any given night, provides
much needed shelter for 30—60 homeless children and their families.
Over 40 people attended, and made bids on various items generously donated by the following
companies:
Calgary Co-op
Conroy & Partners Executive Search
EnCana Corporation
Talisman Energy
Transalta
We thank these companies and their representatives for their kindness and generosity—without their
contributions, such events could not happen!
