Calgary Audit Trails November/December 2006 Inside this issue: Season’s Greetings everyone! As the end of the year approaches, it seems that some undefined law of physics ensures that ‘as the pace of activities and events increases, the ability to keep up and accomplish one’s tasks become exponentially more difficult’. With this in mind, we extend our thanks to everyone who took the time, and braved the cold to attend the Festive Social held on November 28. The Fairmont provided an elegant setting for members to make or renew acquaintances, while helping raise money for charity. The evening’s silent auction helped raise over $600 in donations which will be provided to Inn From the Cold, a charity providing shelter to families in time of need. A very BIG thank you to donors of auction items, successful bidders and all members attending this event. to those new members joining the Calgary IIA. • Designations were recently awarded at the monthly luncheon to Calgary’s newest CIA’s. Check the website for details and photos. A large number of candidates wrote CIA exams over the two-day, four-exam program held in November. We extend our thanks to member CIA’s who served as exam proctors and assisted behind the scenes to handle facilities and exams for this event. Refer to the website for details of the exam and CIA members who helped with this event. For the second consecutive newsletter, we share the happy news of a Board Member who recently became a mother. This is a symptom of the failure of corporate governance to evolve to meet the needs of a complex and rapidly changing business environment. We continue to focus on the technology when we should instead be focusing on the changes that IT both enables and requires. The challenge facing today’s audit and information security management professionals is to ensure that the appropriate governance mechanisms are in place for IT-enabled business investments to deliver optimal value, at an affordable cost, with an acceptable level of risk. John’s presentation will outline techniques that can be applied to assess and improve an organization’s value creation capabilities and some of the key risks, exposures and mitigating controls that should be considered when developing the organization’s value governance processes and practices. SPEAKER BIO: John is an internationally sought-after management consultant with over 40 years experience covering all aspects of the information management field. Author of "The Information Paradox", John's focus is on realizing the benefits of information technology-enabled change. A highly effective strategist, communicator and facilitator, he has led many assignments in strategic planning, organizational change, and value management. John is a frequent speaker on various aspects of strategic planning, information as a strategic resource, and the effective management of information technology (IT). He addresses and advises leaders of the world's largest organizations in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia-Pacific, including Fortune 100 companies. Over the last five years, John's work has extended beyond IT to the broader issues of Enterprise Value Management, and Strategic Governance. John is a Certified Management Consultant, holds the Canadian Information Processing Society's I.S.P. professional designation, and is a member of the Society for Information Management in the United States. As President of The Thorp Network Inc., a BC Corporation, based in North Saanich, John offers a number of value related services, both individually, and through a network of partner organizations. On December 4th, Allan Manarin, Karen Shillingford and Tara Tobler spoke to an Auditing class at Mount Royal College's Bissett School of Business to give students a view into the internal auditing discipline. They discussed the different types of internal audits, the variety of backgrounds and skill-sets of internal auditors, the role of the IIA, and the various internal auditing designations, including the CIA. It was a great interactive discussion with the class, with some very thoughtful questions. We are making arrangements to do similar presentations to MRC classes in the winter term. The Calgary Chapter is working to build relationships with the major educational institutions in the Calgary area and has completed similar presentations to U of C and U of L students over the last couple of years. The Calgary Chapter also sponsors scholarship awards at U of C and MRC. Winter Social and Silent Auction a Success!
